We have just returned from our second holiday at Art Hotel Gran Paradiso as we had such a fantastic time last year. It really is a very special place. I e-mailed Viviana (front desk) directly to enquire about availability of rooms as we wanted a room with a balcony overlooking the bay. Viviana gave us the most wonderful room which was on the top floor and the view from the balcony spectacular. Our room was kept spotlessly clean. The cleaning staff were courteous and friendly and they even popped into the room while we were having dinner just to top up on anything we needed.
The pool and surrounding area was once again spotlessly clean. The views from the pool are just amazing. After sightseeing during the day it was lovely to know that you could have some relaxing time in and beside the pool before getting ready for dinner.
The food was again absolutely excellent (I'd like to bring the chef home with me!) with a good varied choice every evening. The service from the staff in the restaurant was just marvellous. Guiseppi (restaurant manager), Salvatore (deputy restaurant manager), Luca, Nello and all the other restaurant staff (sorry I can't remember everyone's names) made evening mealtimes an enjoyable and memorable occasion. I cannot recommend sitting out on the terrace for your evening meal highly enough as the sunset is beautiful. There are comfortable seats to enjoy a drink on the terrace after your meal.
Sorrento itself is such a lovely town. This time we decided to hire audio guides from the tourist office near the train station. This took us to places we had only walked past on our previous holiday. The guides were definitely worth the 10 euros. You can catch the little bus with carriages for a tour around the town but for us walking around with the guides meant we could wander at our own leisure and spend as long as we wanted at each point.
We also stayed to watch two weddings in the cloisters of San Francesco church. They were both British couples. What a beautiful location for a wedding! I think it was here to that we found ourselves upstairs in a room with music boxes from the 1800's. There were boxes from all over the world and the man working there had great pleasure in winding them up for us to listen to them. He only spoke a little English but you could tell he was passionate about these music boxes and wanted to share the joy of listening to them with us.
The minibus service to and from the hotel is a great service. You do need to plan your activities around this but I'd rather do this and stay at this wonderful hotel than be in a hotel nearer the town. If you don't want to eat at the hotel you can still go into town in the evening. The last mini bus back is at 11pm and there are a number of restaurants who arrange to pick you up and drop you off too which is a very good service.
There is lots to see and do in Sorrento and within a sensible distance too. It really is a fantastic place to take a holiday and we cannot recommend the Art Hotel Gran Paradiso highly enough.
We would like to thank all of the staff at the hotel from the cleaners to the manager! We will be back again one day to enjoy it all over again! I hope that if you do book your holiday here you enjoy it all as much as we have (twice!), and that you come away with some lovely memories of your time in Italy.
