“Stunning Holiday”
Reviewed 5 August 2012

We stayed at Grand Hotel Versuvio for two weeks July August the hotel was elegant the staff more than helpful and friendly the food was lovely with waiter service at night, the view from the hotel was amazing this was the most relaxing holiday would recommend this hotel to anyone we would go back in a heart beat and hope to do so would like to say a big thank you to all the staff for a wonderful holiday see you next year. This hotel has had some bad reviews which I think are more than unfair.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back get the sun in the late afternoon

The views from the hotel, both the bar area and the sea view rooms, are glorious . However the so called garden views much less so as many of the rooms look directly at a wall or if you are lucky and get higher up, a small lemon grove. These are the rooms that appeared to be allocated to First Choice/Thomson. I did enquire prior to travelling if we could book a sea view room and was told that none were available for my chosen dates. I also emailed Thomson and asked them to check again with the same reply. However there were plenty available on our arrival and of course at extra cost, however the 20Euro per night was definitely worth it.
Thomson also rate this hotel as 5* with an official rating of 4*...our personal rating was around 3.5*. Although the hotel was very clean and no there were no major issues the whole building is rather tired and in need of refurbishment.
The food was where the difference between a genuine 4-5* and this hotel was most obvious. The breakfast was the same offerings of tinned fruit, yoghurt, pastries, cereals, cheap ham, cheese and eggs every day. We were not looking for an english breakfast but would have appreciated normal 4* continental breakfast of smoked salmon, different meats and cheeses, a different bread selection, fresh fruit, tomatoes etc.
Lunch was better with a choice of dishes and salad although the salad choice never varied.
Dinner was normally waiter served with a buffet once or twice a week. It consisted of a starter which was quite varied so you could usually find something suitable. The main course was always a meat or fish in some sort of sauce, a potato (singular) and a veg of dubious origin. The quality rated from good (rarely) to poor or very poor(normally) One night per week the buffet is a carvery and this was the only night where the food was 4*. The desert course consisted of 2 types of cakes or puddings or fresh fruit. (On one occassion my wife asked for some of the cream that was on the trolley only to be refused as it was to accompany the other cake).
The entertainment was non existent other than a musician providing musak and one of the guests accompanying him on his violin. This of course suited some clientele, including us, whilst others would prefer and expect something more. We did however meet a lovely couple, Martin and Debs from Bristol, who shared our opinion of the hotel and (although this review may imply we didn't have one) shared our sense of humour.
The location was as expected i.e. around 5 mins drive or 25 minutes walk outside Sorrento and the hotel provided a coach shuttle to downtown Sorrento which was excellent. It was actually possible to walk to town as we did on a couple of occassions but we wouldn't suggest it with children due to the lack of footpaths and the walk back seemed quite hard going though possible.
There is an excellent swimming pool and jacuzzi with no shortage of sun beds and some lovely shade in the pool bar.
We were all inclusive but its a concept that the hotel appears to still be getting used to and it seems to have affected the attitude of some of the staff as with a few exceptions they were a bit miserable.
It is worth noting that the hotel is no longer adults only and children are welcome however (although we didnt have children with us) other than the pool there appeared very little for them to do) .
We would highly recommend, for those that have never been, a visit to Sorrento and the Amalfi coast... it is stunning and as long as you are not looking for a beach holiday its is somewhere that you should do at least once. Unfortunately Capri, rather like our hotel, was very overated.

Room Tip: The seaview rooms are a must and you may further prefer those that look over the pool and sea or tho...

This hotel is lovely with stunning views and scenery, spotlessly clean and bright, but if you have small children or teenagers then apart from the pool that closes at sixpm then there isnothing to do.Food was ok but the staff could have been a bit more friendly, and as for entertainment at night there was one man and his casio keyboard.

We had a really good stay here in May 2012 and overall would rate it a really positive holiday. Few things could be improved eg we felt that there could be a bit more going on in the bar area in the evening and it sometimes felt a little bit behind times. Possibly suited to an older crowd than us, particularly given attitude to 3/4 length trousers in restaurant which caused much embarrassment to my husband and made us all feel bit uncomfortable. Cleanliness very good and the views from our room were amazing! Some staff a bit warmer than others. The reception were really helpful and the shuttle bus service great. Food was lovely too and had really good choice with no repetition. Love salads and breads etc for starters. Swimming pool temperature was fine once you got over initial shock and saves any nasty bugs! Had a great time and would return if we were the sort of people to the go same place twice!

Room Tip: Get one to look over view of vesuvius!!

We (me and my wife + our 2 teenagers) stayed here for 4 nights, july 2012. We had 2 rooms, both with balcony, 1 with see view. Everybody liked it very much. Great swimmingpool. We had a rental car and parking was free and available. Hotel has a free shuttle bus to get into the center of Sorrento which we used as well. Breakfast was fine. On arrival night we had dinner at the hotel, otherwise we went into Sorrento or nearby restaurants.

We arrived late in the day and a wonderful lunch was waiting by the pool with a small staff! The views are perfect and the staff is excellent. The rooms are clean and spacious. Try to include at least one meal. This hotel is formal and elegant! If you are using Sorrento as a base for the coast, it is perfect. We were 10 people and had a small bus, so a parking place was a must. There is a shuttle that comes from and goes to Sorrento center every 15 minutes, so there is total access to the town.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the sea end. You will have a better view!

We stayed here for 3 nights with our teenage daughters so we had two rooms. We booked on the internet, it was on a bed and breakfast basis (not one of the inclusive packages I've read about here). We went for a middle-priced room. It was very large, plenty of storage space and had a small balcony with a table and two chairs which was nice to sit out on. It looked onto lemon groves. We didn't have a sea view from our room, but the view from the hotel is incredible. I would say if you're going for a special occasion like an anniversary then pay the extra for the room with the sea view. Beds are comfortable, there is extra pillows, covers etc. if you need them. The bathroom is good too, plenty of towels and also towels in the bedroom which I assumed were for the pool. There is a large swimming pool, children's pool, jacuzzi and plenty of loungers. However, if you're using the loungers here and are lowering the headrest mind your fingers as my daughter caught her thumb in it which was very painful. At the end of the pool area are steps down to a lovely shaded area with loungers which look onto the bay. Breakfast was delicious, plenty of choice, yogurt, fruit, cereals, juices, coffee, tea etc, pastries and you could get a fried/scrambled/boiled egg if you wished. There is a bar area on the terrace in the evenings. Also the hotel serves meals in the evening but I don't know how much they were. There was a courtesy bus into and back from Sorrento which ran at certain times. It was a good service. However it does not run from 1 to 4 p.m. and when we got back from Herculaneum we got a taxi. We were charged nearly 17 euro for the taxi which was scandalous for literally a five or six minute trip. So I would advise to use the courtesy bus. Although the hotel is quite close to Sorrento there is no footpath and the road is twisty and dangerous so you can't walk into Sorrento. This was probably the only thing I didn't like about this hotel. Sorrento in the evenings is lovely with lots of restaurants and shops etc. I would say overall a very good hotel, we couldn't fault anything with the actual hotel itself. To go to Pompeii or Herculaneum, get the 9 a.m. courtesy bus to Sorrento, then get the train, Circumvesuviana, in the direction of Naples. The train leaves at 9.37 so you can make it. The cost to Pompeii is 1.80, Herculaneum (Ercolano) is 2.10. Trains leave roughly every 30 minutes.

Room Tip: For a special occasion, pay the extra and get a room with an amazing view of the bay and of Vesuvius...
