We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Minerva Hotel.

After reading reviews on here, we were looking forward to the trip and we weren't disappointed. We had the quickest check-in ever and within a few minutes the porter had delivered our bags to the room.

We paid for a sea view with balcony and couldn't believe the balcony we were given (room 501). It was plenty large enough for the 2 sun beds, table and chairs and 'sofa' with fold down sun screen. We were directly over the reception/jacuzzi and although it meant some noise from the terrace etc..... it didn't detract from our enjoyment. It also meant that we could pick up the free wi-fi in our room which helped.

The room itself was small but well equiped. It was cleaned daily and the cleaning staff were very friendly. One downside was no tea/coffee facilities in the room. There is a free safe in room and you have a fridge (mini bar) too.

All the staff at the Minerva were very friendly and attentive. Antonio the bar man was brilliant, the waiting staff were first class, especially Nino (not 100% on spelling) who always remembered your room number and previous nights orders of drinks! The views from the terrace whilst eating is second to none in Sorrento.

We found the food to be excellent. Breakfast was the usual continental style with lots of choice.

We had read some bad reports about the evening meals but we found them to be excellent. The choice of 5 or 6 starters and the same in mains meant they catered for most tastes but be warned, the portion sizes are HUGE! The deserts are lovely, especially the tiramisu. We had the pleasure of the Grand Buffet (unsure if this is a weekly thing) but wow what a spread!

The pool area is great with even better views. The attendant (apologies but cannot remember his name) cannot do enough for you. The free towel hire is helpful too. Although the jaccuzi was freezing cold, and I echo another review on here that said it looks good but not that useful.

The location of this hotel means a 10 minute walk into the town and although this is along a narrow pavement on a busy road, we didn't find it too much trouble.

As a side note, visit the Kiosk bar in the first Piazzo after the hospital. Very friendly and will advise on anything to do with Sorrento.

Room Tip: Sea view with balcony (or ask for 501!)

We really enjoyed our stay at the Minerva, a smallish hotel with lots of character, and views that are difficult to tear yourself away from. The staff are very friendly and courteous, and we had no complaints with the food, in fact the choices were quite varied, together with a quite comprehensive wine list. Our room was on the 7th floor (handy for the pool area), and was of a good size with a small attic style window overlooking the Bay of Naples, so we were less affected by any road noise, the downside was the less than comfortable bed, probably not enough hangers in the wardrobe, although I did make the mistake of waiting until my wife had finished hanging her clothes! The access to a safe in the room (free) was handy though. We found the walk into Sorrento was not as bad as we thought it might be and it was well worth the effort, as we found the old town to be fascinating, lots of interesting shops, viewpoints and plenty of places to eat and drink. We don't very often return to a place a short time after an initial visit but Sorrento and the Minerva could well become an exception in the near future.

The hotel was very clean and the staff very friendly, especially Antonio in the bar. He was always genuinely interested in your day and his English was very good. Our room was beautiful and exceeded all our expectations. We are very fit and active and did not find the walk a problem. The main road is busy and the pavement narrow but we got used to it and the scenery on the walk to Sorrento more than made up for it. We will most definately return to Sorrento and the Minerva would be the hotel of our choice. The air con does not go on until June and it was hot in the room at times but that was our only niggle.

Room Tip: Sea view room with a balcony.

Decided on Sorrento due to the Warmer/Mild climate in May, allowed my parter to choose the hotel, he chose the Minerva from trip advisor reviews & the fact if we were to choose another hotel down the road -The Bristol Hotel this would have been an extra £140ish so opted for the Minerva.

Arrival - We arrived at the hotel at 8:00pm the porter brought up our bags and showed us to reception where we checked in, friendly warm welcome told the breakfast and dinner times and where the pools were, decided to put the bags into the room and check out the view from the room - WOW...... What a view we definitely were not expecting this and the pictures do not do this hotel justice, after we settled into the room we headed for some well needed food in the restaurant. The waiters in the restaurant are smartly dressed and attentive, helpful with the menu choices but any drinks are charged on top of the included meal so has tap water most evenings as beverages were slightly costly. In the restaurant you get 3 courses and get to plate up your own salad plate, The starters come out the same size as main meals and they defiantly do not skimp on portions the food menu changes every evening so you have a good selection for all palettes.

First impressions - I was very pleased with my partners choice - the next day we went to our welcome meeting as we were on a package holiday, this was very helpful as they did a walking tour of the main town, We were greeted by our rep and we strolled into town with the rest of the group, having never been to Sorrento before we found this helpful as we decided we were going to do all our own trips using the public transport - Cheap, extremely reliable, safe and having researched the places we wanted to go before the trip had no problems.

Walk into town - OK My parter and I are 23 & 27 but you walk out of the Hotel, cross the road and carry on down the hill (which is not too steep but single file in parts) it takes around 10mins to reach the bottom of the hill and a further 5 -10mins to the main square (at a leisurely pace) The hotel is situated in a brilliant location - you get the amazing views you wouldn't get staying further down the hill or in the town and your not to far from the centre.

Staff - We had no problems at all with any of the staff they were al very friendly, greeted you as you walked past them and once we had been there a few days the Bar man Antonio greeted us by name and made friendly conversation they remembered our room numbers and orders. We never needed to ask them for directions or info as we did all this research before arriving

The room - We stayed in room 207 this was in a separate block out from reception, this room was close to the road but with 2 double glazed doors this blocked out the sound of the cars but not the beeping from traffic and heavier vehicles, this didn't bother us as we currently live on a main road and next to a rail line. Did find the beds/pillows to be very hard, I can sleep anywhere & don't have problems with beds but these were different, I woke most mornings with achy neck/shoulders (hence the sleep quality 3*). The bedding was clean and the rooms were tidy and spotless, bathroom was well equipped with shower over the bath, a hand shower by the bath taps, good hair dryer and plugs in the bathroom for shaver/toothbrush charger etc. The room was decorated tastefully and there was a wardrobe w/ safe for hanging and storing clothes shoes etc there weren't drawers in our room so items that couldn't be hung up were folded in the bottom of the wardrobe. One down side to the room would be no tea of coffee making facilities which were missed after a long day walking and exploring you'd have to go to the bar and pay 2.50 Euros for one instead of having the facilities in the room.

Food / Breakfast - Breakfast from from 7-10am(double check exact times) there was a good variety, fresh fruit, fruit juices, croissants and patisserie, toast with a selection of jams and spreads, salami, bacon, hams, egg, tea / coffee etc. Sat on the terrace every morning taking in the amazing views before exploring for the day. Dinner started at 7pm starters included a salad or fruit dish, pastas, soup etc and the mains had a fish meat and vegetarian selection, puddings always had 3 choices, fruit and then a few cakes (the Tiramisu was our favourite and there cakes were good) - I would give the food 4.5/5 sometimes weren't sure if some vegetables on the plate were fresh or tinned !

Pools / bathing / sunning areas - Roof top pool area was lovely and quiet in May - there was a man who looked after this section and it was always immaculate we would often see him cleaning the areas around the pool, make sure you follow the pool rules (showering before entering pool, no shoes around the edge of the pool, towels on sunbeds) the sun beds have sun visors and if these became a little loose he would come over with an Allen key to tighten them this was never too much trouble, towels are given out for around the pool, the pool isn't huge but its good for a little paddle. Terrace by reception has a jacuzzi pool, looks fancy but is not heated but there is a large areas for chilling out and there are sun beds if you fancy resting out here rather than the roof terrace.

Getting out and About - If your like me and like to plan things before you go you will find that Getting out and about in Sorrento is easy, all train / bus tickets are sold to you in Minutes, 100mins for a train will get you one way to Pompeii from Sorrento and cost 2.80 euro (approx) but for a return (2x100min tickets) will cost 4.30 euros (approx) We used the Circumvesuviana and it runs approx every 30mins from Sorrento - this is the end of the line for this track so you won't get on the wrong train when leaving Sorrento just check which platform the trains is leaving from. Travelling to Pompeii Scavi (excavation) took around 40mins just follow the crowds of people leaving the train to the entrance of the site (1min walk) allow up to 7 hours to explore Pompeii it is vast but there is a cafe + toilets inside the site and a few shaded areas) Herculaneum is about a 50min train ride and the site is more intact and complete allow 2-3 hours to explore. Capri is a place to visit early in the morning, head straight to the top and work your way down this way you miss alot of the crowds but it does get very busy but an amazing place to visit.

Overall I would recommend this hotel - Having read other reviews, very few people haven't been impressed - This should not put you off as the majority of people really rate this hotel. I am very picky about hotels and travelling abroad and this is only my 2nd package holiday I usually independently travel and arrange my owns flights and accommodation but I have been very impressed with the Minerva, its staff, the overall feel, the friendliness of the staff and locals, the cleanliness and the views - The experience we had has completely outweighed any minor bad points and nothing spoilt the holiday, it was perfect the setting/location was ideal and i was sad to leave.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra to get a balcony + sea view
