We recently stayed at the Minverva Hotel in Sorrento. Italy and it was one of the most enjoyable trips we have done. We have travelled to St Tropez, Monaco, Cannes and other exotic Riviera locations and the Hotel Minerva tops the lot. The view from the Hotel would have to be one of the best in Sorrento looking back over the bay and the town as well as Mount Vesuvius. It is a short walk (10-15 mins) to the town centre and it is just as easy to walk to the port to catch boats to Posotano, Amalfi, Capri etc. The Hotel was great, it had two separate pools, both with great views over the bay, restaurant, bar etc. and it was a welcomed break after doing daily tours and each night there was entertainment which was relaxing to soak up the Italian atmosphere. The food at the hotel was good, however we chose to eat in town most evenings.

We found most people at the hotel were mature age with very few kids which was great as there were no loud noisy pool side activities etc which you often find and all inclusive hotels through packaged deals.

The rooms were standard and had everything you need including mini bar, TV with Sky, airconditioning etc. The beds were firm which we found okay. The view from the rooms was amazing. I would suggest getting a room above the pool, restaurant area, this is much quieter than the lower level rooms as there is a road in front of the Hotel, but you do not really here the traffic too much.

The staff the hotel were brilliant and extremely helpful. It feels like the hotel is family as they are very warm and always ready to help. On getting our bus to the airport when leaving, the staff packed a travel bag with food, drinks etc. at no cost. A special thanks to Nino in the restaurant and Antonio in the bar for making our stay at the hotel so enjoyable. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Get a room with a sea view above the pool/restaurant as this is quieter than the lower rooms.

We have just returned from a 1 week stay at the Hotel Minerva for our honeymoon and I can honestly say that I could not find fault with this hotel.
The location affords stunning views over the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Yes, there is a street below but from the terraces and pool you don't notice the street noise. While there is some noise heard in the lower level rooms when the balcony doors are open, once they are closed you don't hear anything. The hotel is up the hill but other reviews that say the hill is steep are completely ridiculous. It will take about 10 minutes to walk into town and perhaps 15 minutes back up and the slop is VERY gentle. In fact, the walk allows time for you to take in the breathtaking scenery!

The room

Our room was of average size (although I realise that us Brits generally accpet a smaller room size than our friends across the pond). The bathroom had plenty of space, a bath, shower and sink with large mirror. The bedroom area was clean, and typical of the style of rooms shown on the hotel website - colourful and bright. The floors were tiled and although our balcony was small, it was more private than some of the others due to the high partition between us and next door.
There are TVs and mini-bars in the rooms which came in handy for storing our bottled water - a must if coming in summer months! If I'm honest, the only thing I would say is that, having seem the photos of some of the rooms online, we were slightly dissapointed with the size of the room and balcony at first but this soon subsided the next morning when we woke up to the most amazing view of the bay. In response to some of the reviews regarding the rooms, if you come to a hotel with the intention of staying in your room the whole time then you might as well book the Travelodge at the airport! Our room was clean, comfortable and there was enough room for both of us as well as storage space for our clothes and suitcases.

The rest of the hotel

I have read some comments on the pools not being heated. This is actually a relief in the summer as it can get very hot and a dip in the pool is great to cool down. I cannot comment on the temperature of the pools in coller months but in my experience, it is normal that outdoor pools aren't heated. The smaller 'jacuzzi' pool can get slightly colder due to it's location and the fact that half of the pool is in shade most of the day but the rooftop pool was lovely. While not huge, there was still plenty of room for a swim and a splash about. There are plenty of sun loungers and a small snack bar serving drinks and limited snacks until the pool closes around 8pm.

The restaurant

When we arrived it was quite late and the restaurant had stopped serving dinner for the evning. Despite this, as they new we were arriving late, the staff had kept aside supper for all of the guests on our transfer which consisted of salad with tomatoes, mozzarella and some fruit. There were also cold meats for the carnivores. Personally, I wasn't keen on the dish but it was a lovely gesture and I needn't have worried as for the rest of the week the food was delicious. We stayed half board but as this was our first trip to Italy, we had planned on eating out for dinner a couple of times to try the food we'd heard so much about. The food in the hotel was so good that we didn't bother going anywhere else. I really can't understand some of the remarks about the food being bad. It is understandable that you won't always like something, this happens whether at home or abroad. There was plenty of choice for all courses as well as bread and a good salad selection. As a vegetarian I was worried about there not being much choice but there was always one option and usually two for both starter and main. The staff were also happy to suggest something else if you didn't fancy what was on the menu - usualyy a basic pasta dish or a variation of another main without the meat.
I can't really comment in the indoor area of the restaurant as we only ate there on the night of arrival but it looked really nice. What really stole the show was the outdoor terrace where we ate every night. It was just lovely and once again, the view was amazing! The terrace itself was also beautiful.

Overall I found the Hotel Minerva to be fantastic. The staff were all lovely. Really friendly and always willing to help. The food was great, the rooms were nice and quirky little sittig areas that all lead off from one another were a nice place to just sit and relax.

Sorrento itself was beautiful if a bit busy and hot but that's to be expected in August. I'd definitely come back and certainly return to the Minerva but perhaps earlier in the year - May or June when it was quiter and cooler. It's a great base for visiting the surrounding area. We visited Herculaneum and Pompeii, Amalfi and Positano, did a boat trip with a dip in the sea and got the boat to Capri. It's also worth spending a couple of days exploring Sorrento. All the little side streets in the hisstoric centre and bustling with shops selling everything from shoes to ceramics, inlaid wood items and the famous Limoncello made from Sorrento lemons!

Holiday of a lifetime.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room with sea view

Location: High on hill overlooking the bay on top of main road leading out of town. As other guests have stated the views from the hotel are spectacular. The noise from the road isn't a problem, the rooms are double glazed which reduces the noise level and you keep the windows closed for the air conditioning. Its about a 15 minute walk into town. The hotel exterior isn't particularly attractive, but the interior is airy and decorated in Italian style with some lovely chandeliers. Lovely veranda overlooking the bay where you can have cocktails in the evening.

Room: Our room was very large and spacious with tall ceilings and lovely brightly coloured tiles on the floor. Lovely large window overlooking the bay with a view that you will never tire of. Could do with a little renovation but don't let that put you off. Beds were a bit firm and pillows too, but i've found that to be quite common on the continent.

Pool: The pool is an average size, a bit smaller than it looks in the photos, but we found it fine and hardly ever busy. It is cared for by a nice guy who runs a very tight ship and is spotless, woe betide anyone who doesn't shower before getting in! Again with marvellous views.

Service: The staff were marvellous and very friendly and helpful and greet you each time you enter the hotel. The breakfast buffet is lovely with some lovely local pastries and flans and the usual type of continental fare. Lovely coffee even the decaf. It is taken on the verranda overlooking the bay.

Overall we had a lovely stay in this hotel however the walk up hill may be a problem for some but I understand there is a bus into town but we preffered to walk.

Stayed with my wife and we debated on a couple of other hotels but we definitely made the right choice. Staff were outstainding and so friendly from arrival to departure, Antoneitta could not be any more helpful, while Franco runs an efficient pool area on the top floor and if you support Juventus you will get on famously!. Short walk to the main areas, (10-15 mins) and about 25 mins to the train station or harbour. The trains are easy to catch if you are going to Pompei or Herculeneon whch for €2.10 each way it is direct to Pompei Scavi or Ercaldo Scavi stations respectively. We also took a boat trip to Amalfi which was around €14 each way per person, but provides a relaxing day out and very scenic. Taxis are about €80 from hotel to airport (worth booking in advance with hotel) and takes about an hour. Plenty of bars and restaurants in the centre but the food in the hotel was excellent and the evening views over the bay are breathtaking. Can not think of any negatives but plenty of positives.

Room Tip: High floors with sea view balcony provide excellent views, worthwhile

Stayed here with our two teenage sons - everything good that you read about this hotel is true - fantastic views over to Naples , lovely roof top pool, good breakfasts and very friendly staff. We had two adjacent rooms with connecting door so more more like a small partment and good for families - 609 and 608 we think

Where to begin...Following our recent two week Holiday. I can only agree with all the positive reviews this hotel receives and well deserves. Our full praise and thanks to the management (Antonietta) and her super staff for providing an excellent/professional/friendly service making our holiday complete. This type of welcoming made our stay very relaxed and I feel this is an added bonus when you are away from your own home.
We look forward very much to returning to Sorrento in the future, and the ( Minerva) as it has made a special impact on both myself and my husband. 10/10

Looked at 6 or so hotels in Sorrento, chose the Minerva, which was the most expensive. Paid extra for a room with a sea facing balcony which was well worth it.

Entrance to the hotel is disappointing, it's straight off a busy road, and you really do have to pick your time to dash across the pedestrian crossing in between the endless flow of cars, scooters and buses. However don't let the entrance fool you, reception is on the fifth floor accessible via lift.

When you step out onto the fifth floor terrace, the view is jaw dropping right across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius on the other side. I think our collective response was 'Wow' ! We were so stunned by the view I think we dropped our suitcases and just stood there staring into the distance, it took a few minutes before we remembered we had to go and check-in.

The fifth floor terrace is enormous, incorporating a jacuzzi and sun-loungers, an area for the bar and the restaurant . You could quite esaily spend a whole day on the terrace eating , drinking and admiring the view.

Our room was the level above reception, with the same stunning view. the room was large, clean and tidy, it had a safe, fridge, sky TV , but no tea/coffee making facilties.

For anyone booking this hotel I would advise getting a room at a level above the reception area. I don't know, but could imagine the lower levels may suffer somewhat from traffic noise.

Swimming pool is on the roof, with a small bar for drinks and snacks. Like the rest of the hotel it was spotlessly clean.

Restaurant on the main terrace is superb, again great views, attentive staff, a great selection of wines etc. We booked half-board so were inclined to eat there in the evenings anyway, but to be honest in the week we were there we didn't find anywhere else as nice.

We found all the staff to be fantastic, from the cleaning ladies first thing in the morning who always greeted you with a smile to the manager who was always helpful.
There are also some real characters from the Maitre d' who dressed in a smart double-breasted suit with black bow tie and who I nicknamed 'Don Corleone', to Nino the Sommelier (really nice guy) and Antonio the bar manager , another nice guy and very 'smooth' !

What you don't get with this hotel is 'Boutique chic' , but you do get probably the most stunning view in Sorrento, nice food and drink, and superb service from the friendly and helpful staff.

Room Tip: I would book a room above the reception level, sea facing with balcony
