“Great hotel, but inappropriate staff”
Reviewed 14 August 2012

We recently stayed at the Hotel Minerva at the tail end of our Honeymoon. We were immediately taken away by the beautiful view from our hotel balcony and the overall bright, colorful decor of the hotel. During our stay, we generally dealt with Franco, who was the the day time concierge behind the desk. At all times he acted friendly, professionally, and was eager to offer suggestions, hints, directions, etc.. On the other hand, the evening staff was a completely different story. Nello, who worked the main desk during this time, was rude, arrogant, and seemed annoyed by any question asked of him. On one of our last days we needed to exchange some dollars for Euro's and since it was a Sunday, we were unable to go to a bank to do so. We were told that such a transaction could be made at the front desk. Silly me, but I didn't work with Franco, and instead allowed Nello to make the transaction. The conversion he offered us seemed a little low, and when we double checked the rate online, it was drastically different from what was listed online and what we had received from banks throughout Italy. When confronted about the rate, he immediately became defensive, saying I was a "lucky man" and that he would allow me to get my money back even though this was "unheard of." (I forgot to mention earlier that this occurred on the last night of our stay. Earlier that day we requested a wake up call from Franco, and as usual he made a record of our request in front of us) After receiving our money, Nello and the overnight Concierge (Enzo?) confirmed our 4AM wake up call..TWICE. Needless to say we never received our wake up call, only a call to say that our shuttle bus was outside waiting for us. Initially when asked what happened to our wake up call, Enzo said "Hmm, I put in the wake up call..you didn't get it?" Later on his story changed and he said that Nello (AKA Michael) "must have forgotten to do it." For what was claimed to be an accident, we never received an apology or any type of sentiment of regret, only a "yeah, alright bye bye" when I told Enzo "tell Nello I know what he did." What a shame that such an upscale place has such low class, petty people working there.

I returned to the Minerva hotel after a previous stay seven years ago and it did not disappoint. One member of staff even remembered me unprompted. All the staff are very friendly and attentive. Our room was spotless and very pretty, with majolica tiles in the bathroom. The view from our balcony across the bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius is one of the great views of the world, and was repeated on the lovely breakfast terrace. We went half board this time, and meals included local dishes and more experimental ones too, made with tasty local produce - those Neapolitan tomatoes! Wines were reasonable both by the bottle and the glass and the wine waiter was great fun. The pool on the roof was pristine and a real sun trap, with a nice bar for cooling drinks. There is also a small fitness suite. To achieve such spectacular views, the Minerva has to perch on the Sorrento cliffs, but there are lifts to road level, with a bus stop outside taking you to the centre of town in 10 mins. Sorrento is a safe, pretty town ideal for those who want to explore both the Amalfi coast as well as Pompeii and Naples. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony for stunning views!

Stayed at Minerva in June 2012. Firstly staff: brilliant, helpful, funny, knowledgeable always willing to help. Hotel typically Italian. Our room was huge, AC, perhaps more wardrobe space needed in such a large room. No view as it was in the bowels of the hotel. A friends room was fantastic. Really depends on what part of the hotel you are allocated. It was hot so we were thankful we had the room where it was and not one overlooking the sea. It was cool all the time.
Restaurant: we were half board and there was sufficient variety. The Minerva is up a hill so be prepared to have a walk to the centre. In fact the staff made the stay one you would want to return to. Loved having access to books which were all around the hotel.

Sorrento is a wonderful place. Visit Pompei and the Amalfi coast.

We had the pleasure of attending a wedding Italian style. Be prepared to eat and eat and eat if this is what you are going for.

Worse points........probably the landing at the airport coming back to rain and 13 degrees!!!!

Room Tip: Ours was very large and cool with a garden table and chairs BUT the view was a rockface. We did not...

We have just returned from a 7 night stay at the Minerva hotel in Sorrento. This hotel is in a wonderful location. It is situated a short walk from town but far enough away to be quiet and peaceful. The views are fantastic and upon our arrival we were greeted by a huge fireworks display from the sea which we had prime views from the balcony. The staff are friendly and will do anything to help you. We especially liked Antonio and Antoinette who worked behind the bar. They always wore a smile and were very welcoming. Antonio arranged a special dinner for us at a restaurant called 'Relais Blu' which was a wonderful experience (although a little out of our price bracket). If you want somewhere near to town but peaceful then this hotel would suit you. We do not usually return to the same hotel but we wouldn't think twice about returning to this one.

Room Tip: If you want a sea view you need to pay a little more and make sure you book that room. Some people h...

The Minerva Hotel has a picture perfect view over Sorrento , that added to fantastic staff and excellent food, this is the perfect base in Sorrento. My partner and myself spent a week here in July and cannot fault the hotel in any way.Although we were on half board we would normally go into town and try dinner somewhere different , but the hotel food was so good and staff so nice we never felt the need to go into town. The views from our room balcony and all the public areas were stunning and you felt like you could just sit there and look all day and night. The pool area was great and Franco was so good at looking after the area ,before we went I had read people complaining about him being a bit pushy at looking after the place but I thought he was just making sure that everyone enjoyed the experience ,he came to me and asked me to move my lounger back a bit as I was encroaching on other people when I was chasing the sun. Will definately recommend this hotel and return in the future. We travelled with Thomson's and have got to say that the 3 trips we done with them were excellent and well worth the money, the guides knew their stuff , all in all a brilliant holiday.

Just returned from the Minerva; family of 4 (kids are 15 and 12). Absolutely fabulous holiday, made so special by the Minerva. Firstly it has a wonderful location; the views of the bay from the rooms and the public areas, including the restaurant are totally stunning. Secondly, the hotel is very well run with fabulous staff throughout; each and every one going out of their way to help make your stay comfortable and making you feel special. Yes, we spent rather more than we normally would for our summer holiday, but was it worth the extra? Absolutely! Many of the guests return year after year, and we understand why. To return to this hotel each evening, to take a drink on the terrace followed by beautifully cooked food with excellent choices; again in a terrace restaurant with views over the bay, being served by friendly and attentive waiters and waitresses is a real treat - if you can afford it, do not hesitate - the Minerva is a special place.

Room Tip: There are a few rooms without sea view - you must request a sea view!
