As everyone else has said, absolutely wonderful views of Sorrento from the hotel. All the staff were lovely but 'naughty Nino' the wine waiter and Antonio the bar man really made us laugh (Antonio makes great cocktails and said he'd been in competitions). Every time you went into the restaurant you were warmly welcomed by all the waiters. The pool guy keeps the pool etc. spotless - make sure you shower before you get in the pool or he will remind you (he has a good sense of humour too so don't take it personally). We didn't have a balcony (room 608) but had big windows which we were able to open fully and take in the view, and we were hardly in the room anyway. The room was spacious and airy and the hotel was very clean. We had a large bed (2 singles joined) and we found them to be firm but comfortable. The road noise during the day didn't bother us as we expected it and we didn't hear it during the night with the windows closed.
As the evenings got warmer we were able to sit on the terrace after dinner with a drink, chat with the other guests and listen to the guy on the organ (we're sure he made his own words up to the songs).
We went down to the Grand Marina (which is actually the small one nearest the hotel) and had a very nice lunch at the Emilia and O'Puledrone (we were given a complimentary limoncello from O'Puledrone and 1/2 litre jug of a decent tasting white wine was only €4). Sitting by the water with a guy playing an accordion, eating fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and seafood with a jug of wine... well you couldn't get better than that. Just what we imagined Italy to be but didn't think it existed.
We also had large wooden board of mixed Italian meats, mozzarella cheese and olives at the Monnalisa in the town which was very good (€16 for 2 to share)
We were on half board and had all our evening meals in the hotel as we didn't feel the need to go anywhere else. Usually about 5 choices of starter (which were the same size as a main meal) and about 5 choices for the main course too plus various desserts, not that we had many as we were too full. As others have mentioned it's the usual continental buffet breakfast but we enjoy that when we're abroad. Drinks in the hotel were cheaper than many of the bars in town €6.50 for a long drink/cocktail and €5 for a large beer. If you have a bottle of wine and don't finish it they will keep it for you to have the next evening. We paid $5 just for a can of coke in the main square at the Fauno but their olives and the chance to do some people watching was worth it! We travelled with Thompsons and our rep, Ashleigh, was very good. Go to the welcome meeting which is on the morning after you arrive. Ashleigh wasn't pushy in trying to sell you trips which tends to put people off the welcome meetings. and you are taken to a huge historic restaurant for a 15 minute talk and given the chance to have a look on what trips are on offer. You then can go on the mini walking tour of the town and get to have some tasters...
We took the recommendations posted on here and took the train to Hercleum but it was really busy and they weren't letting any more in until some left so we got back on the train and went to Pompeii instead. We also got the boat to Positano and the bus back - all very easy to do and if you're not sure just ask. Check out the forum and you will find out all you need to know.
I won't repeat all the excellent reviews but will say that the Minerva must be one of the best hotels in one of the best locations in Sorrento and already some of our friends are looking to book it in the future. Normally we tend not to return to a place but we would make an exception here.
Thanks to everyone at the Minerva for helping to make this such a great holiday X
