“God Points and Bad Points”
Reviewed 31 August 2008

Only had a 2 night stay (sort of a flying visit). The hotel was adequate, the double be turned out to be two singles put together, the room was small. I was so disappointed when first go there thoughts of leaving early did cross my mind.

Be aware that the hotel is quite a distance from the train station and it would not be recommended to walk with suitcase.

There was a small beach near the hotel however form the look the water did not look too clean and the beach did not look that inviting (more of a small harbour for fishing boats).

The positive side was the room was very clean and the view was good.

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel, however beware that the walk is all uphill and is not that easy during the hottest part of the day.

We had the unfortunate luck of been given room 201 for a whole week and it was absolutely without doubt the tiniest and most unliveable amount of space that any hotel could inflict on a paying customer. It was so bad it was laughable. We couldn't walk without bumping into each other and there wasn't even a surface to leave my handbag on. We had to keep everything in our cases.
Even though it was perfectly clean, the bathroom was unforgiveably unworkable and you can't shower without rubbing off the doors. We asked about upgrading and staying an extra night but this wasn't reponded to.
The staff are polite - the guy who greeted us and the guy operating breakfast were smiley and nice. The rest of the hotel looks great , the cheap Wifi and the sun terrace are good, but not even having a place to sit down to put your shoes on without knocking something over was just ridiculous.
It's also very noisy because of the tiled floors.
If you have to stay here, be careful they don't offload room 201 on you! It's not worth your money or ruining your stay at beautiful Sorrento.

The hotel has different rates for different rooms. Probably at the time, the hotel was full and no upgrading was possible. We regret that we could not meet our valued Guests' needs.

The staff was welcoming. The hotel was clean with beautiful views from the balcony. Del Mare is steps from the sea with a small beach, boats rentals and tours and excellent fresh seafood restaurants. You can walk up to the charning village of Sorrento or take a very convenient bus from right near the hotel. We will return to Del Mare.

Long steep walk to town centre. You must be fit. Not for older people. Owner of the hotel is extremely rude. My friend decided not to stay at this hotel and the owner demanded €80 from me. I said no, so he locked me out of my room. When we were leaving, he overcharged me for a bus journey so ended up getting the €80. Also my brother in law stayed here and the owner charged him €20, because he said he stole a bedsheet. Ruined my vacation in Italy. Would never stay there again. Great deals at hotel on Piazzo Tasso Square.

Our stay in Sorrento was the second of three stops during our two-week vacation in Italy which included Rome and Florence. We were traveling with our two older sons (one teen & one 20+), so needed a room that would sleep four. After looking on line for a few days for something affordable, yet lovely, I located the Hotel del Mare on the Venere website. The Hotel del Mare is located in the small fishing village of Marina Grande which can be reached either by car, or more pleasantly, a 10-minute walk through winding streets of Sorrento which weave down toward the marina. We took a boat from Naples which dropped us at Marina Piccola in Sorrento where we hired a taxi to the Hotel del Mare. We were greeted by name as we arrived for our three-night stay and asked whether we would enjoy an upgrade from the room we booked on the front side of the hotel to one on the top floor with one-step access to the patio that overlooked the harbor, and didn't hesitate to say yes. The rooms at the front of the hotel have small balconies with two chairs and overlook the winding street that decends into Marina Grande from Sorrento. Our room -- on the back side of the hotel -- had a large window that opened to a view of the small marina, restaurants on the water, and sunbathing pier seen over red-tiled rooftops. Our room was immaculate, the bathroom beautifully tiled and stocked with plenty of towels, and a shower that, although a bit tight for large men, featured a variety of spray settings which were pleasant after a long day of sightseeing and shopping. Our "quad" room contained two twin beds pushed together, and two pull down beds. With our luggage, it was a bit small, but comfortable. Satellite television and wi-fi were available for our use in our room-- the wi-fi for a charge of 5 Euros a day. A small bar is located in the lobby, and drinks can be enjoyed either on the roof patio or on the chairs outside at the hotel entrance. A generous breakfast buffet was included with our reservation each morning including a selection of pastries, fruit, cold cereal, eggs, toast, a selection of cold meat and cheeses as well as cappucino, tea, and juice. We chose to dine one evening at one of the several restaurants in Marina Grande instead of walking up to Sorrento which the Hotel del Mare offered a 10% discount for. It was excellent, featuring a variety of seafood and pasta with fine service. There is a small market around the corner from the hotel with wine, cheese, bread, cheese, and other necessities and a bus stop that will take you the short ride into Sorrento. Our only complaint is that we couldn't have stayed longer. This was the most pleasant stop in our travels without question.

This place was recommended to us by a friend and we were very impressed. While right next to the beach, we did not have a water view but that was fine. The rooms were very clean, well service and everything worked, including the air condidtioning. The rooms are small but doable. The owner is terrific and the assistant manager, Tonino is wonderful. Everyone was very accomodating to our needs. Breakfast was included and was excellent, including eggs, hard soft whatever you want, lovely pastries etc.

I am fortunate enought to be working in Southern Italy for about 7 months. I first came to Sorrento about 3 years ago and always love coming back. Now that I am in country for a while I try and make it there at least once a month for the weekend. I have stayed at a wide variety of places on various visits and this is the first hotel I have stayed at twice. Small clean rooms, reasonable rates, friendly staff, not too far out of the center of town yet not too close.

If you come in by train and have very little luggage, the walk down to "Marina Grande" is not too bad. There is also the bus that goes there directly from the train station for 1 EURO. Taxis at the the train station will try and overcharge. Walk down and take a left at the main street. A few blocks down at the main square there will be taxis lined up and they will take up to 4 people to the hotel for 13 EUROS.

The marina is a small fishing villge so there is a nice mix of locals and tourists. There is a nice bar on a pier and several good restaurants. From there you can go up a very long flight of steep stairs, wind through some back streets, presto, you are downtown. The trip down is much easier than the trip up.

The hotel has a decent enough breakfast. Pretty average by Eurpean standards. The staff are very helpful if you need directions anywhere. The rooms are small but clean. The second time I stayed they bumped me up to a sea view room and even reduced the price I paid previously for a non-sea view room. Just an FYI, a non-sea view room is just that. My view was stairs and a back alley. I really didn't care though, as I just used it to sleep in.
