Returned from a week's stay through Thomson and this is the hotel to go to if you do not want to be anonymous in a many-roomed hotel. The accommodation is excellent, the staff bellisimo and the swimming pool absolutely lovely as it is heated. There are loungers near the pool and you are not harrassed by staff to order coffee, beer, cocktails etc. as in some other hotels. The staff are very helpful and friendly but not overbearing. The chefs work hard to present a varied, excellent Italian menu. There are 4 courses to the evening meal which is exquisitely waiter served by Marcello and his experienced team.. The breakfast is buffet style with plenty of cereals, fresh fruit, scrambled & boiled eggs, a hot plate that might be sausages or bacon, plenty of butter and rolls. I did not see any soya milk, but I would think if you requested it, you would get it.

I have seen reviews where some people are not happy with the location of their rooms. If you book through Thomson, when the "seaview" rooms with balcony are sold out then the allocation is to rooms on the side. The hotel faces west which is seaview, so after that pick the south facing side and the 3rd floor or above if you want a view. I imagine if you booked the north side or the east facing rear, you would not get a view at all. It is difficult as your contract is with Thomson and contractually if you have a double room with balcony that does not guarantee a view. If you are booking direct, I expect you can specify.

I do not know why Thomson describe this as "off the beaten track" when they do not describe the Azzua Nastro which is bigger and definitely "off the beaten track" being way out of Sorrento. Although you cannot walk into Sorrento, there is a clean, efficient small hotel bus that leaves on the dot every hour for the centre of Sorrento 10 minutes away, and returns at 15 mins past the hour, every hour until 11.15pm. If you need to go for a walk after dinner and find the local windy, narrow road too dangerous, catch the Hotel Bus into town and have a walk around there. There is a volcanic "beach" more of an inlet with some tavernas and small fishing boats in the high season. It is a long walk down, and an even more strenuous and longer walk up. But it is possible. Better the lovely heated enormous pool.

The hotel bus makes it possible to to go to the Marina and catch the ferries for Capri and Ischcia and also to the Sorrento Railway Station and catch a train to many stations all the way north to Naples and beyond. Using this you can visit Pompeii and Herculeum (Ercolini). What is more difficult is going around the Amalfi coast south-east to Positano, Ravello, Minori, Maori, Salerno, Pastum, etc. as it is very narrow, long and winding but the local buses do follow the route but you would have to allow plenty of time.

This hotel is a lovely find and we noted there were many more mature couples who returned year after year - just for the food. We would definitely visit again. Thank you Ugo and All Your Excellent Team

Room Tip: Room on west facing front have sea views. If not available, book rooms on south facing side at leas...

We stayed at the Best Western Hotel Solara in October this year, it was a lovely hotel situated nicely outside of the hussle and bustle of Sorrento.
We choose this hotel because of all the good reviews on TA and we were not disappointed :-)

The hotel offers a free shuttle bus (Coach) which leaves the hotel every hour and does a drop off/collection service to Sorrento. It drops you near to the Railyway / Bus station so ideal for getting to day trips.

From the Railway you can catch the train from Sorrento to Pompeii/Vesuvias easily and we also caught the Sita bus for a trip down the almalfi coast which was rather hair raising! The only thing i would warn people about is that although we went in Mid October we still had to queue for the bus and had to wait 40 mins as the first bus which turned up filled up with people in front of us so then had to wait for another one, so if you do wish to do this trip allow time for queing! We only went as far as Positano and decided to get off and explore this little harbour town we chose to go down the steps........ now whilst it was quite fun and different i would warn you that going down and back up the steps is not for the feint hearted (we counted up to 100 and gave up!) we are relatively 'fit' people however the backs of our calfs were aching massively the next day so you may wish to go down one way and back up the road way! :-)

The hotel Solara's pool area was lovely and clean, well tended with lots of different areas for sun bathing and nice comfy beds to lay on and umbrellas to use should you require to screen the sun. There is also a table and seat area at the top of the pool where you can have a snack or coffee or proper lunch should you require and a small garden area behind this with a few chairs. The hotel offers free wiFi which is good, there is also a free for all computer in the main reception area which you can also use. The restaurant offered a good selection of breakfast each day and the staff there were very attentive and helpful, the views from there were lovely too.

Our room was on the first floor with balcony overlooking the bay towards Ischia, it was very spacious (we had a put up bed in the room as well) and the ensuite was of good size and had all amenities. It could at times be noisey as we were situated over the carpark and in the early hours you could hear the re-cycyling being collected etc., but these things have to happen it's just a shame they don't do it during daytime hours! Below the hotel is a tiny little harbour with a few restaurants which i would definately recommend visiting it's a very easy walk down and up, there is also a small beach area.

We did the usual day trips, Capri (very disappointing), Pompeii/Vesuvias this was stunning and well worth the trip. It's all well laid out/signed so you can't get lost when you get off the train we did Vesuvias first as it was lovely and clear then did Pompeii afterwards. The reason we found Capri disappointing was that it is full of very expensive shops that you can't afford or would want to buy from and apart from to admire the lovely streets and views there's not much else to do in the time you are given. I wrongly presumed you could just catch the ferry over for as long as you'd like, but we were given a return time to be back so had to choose one thing to do whilst on the island, we had set our minds on doing the chair lift at Ana Capri and was glad we did because the view from the top was lovely there was also a nice looking restaurant where you could sit and enjoy it from but that didn't give us enough time to do the boat trip around to the cave....... so this is why it's disappointing!

If you want any other questions please feel free to ask. I would not hesitate to recommend the Hotel Solara.

Room Tip: If i went back i'd pick a balcony room overlooking the pool area!

Just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel and I can't praise it enough. Read the reviews before we went and was sceptical as they seemed so good, however we were not disappointed. When we arrived there was a drinks reception before registering into our rooms. The hotel is lovely, yes it is about 2/3 kilometres from Sorreto town centre but the hotel provide a shuttle bus every hour from 8 am until 11pm at night and it was very reliable. The food in the restaurant was superb, 5 choices for starters, main and dessert and the starters were huge!! Sometimes by the time you had eaten the salad bar, starter and main you had no room for a dessert! The pool was good and was very well maintained by Antonio. Children also used the table tennis and the gym so there was enough to keep them occupied. We went on the Amalfi Drive and it was a great day out the views were spectacular, however I would recommend you take your own lunch as it was a little expensive when paying for 4 and it wasn't the best of food. We also visited Pompeii however I would strongly recommend you do this yourself, we took the shuttle bus to Sorrento, and caught the train, less than 6 euros return and 14 stops took you right outside the ruins. Also I would strongly recommend that if you have children under the age of 18 years take a photocopy of their passports and you get them in for free! Saving 11 euros per child! Well worth doing. Pompeii was fantastic and the children thoroughly enjoyed, we spent 3 hours there but you could have easily spent most of the day there! There is also a small fishing village 10 mins walk from the hotel, walk downhill but the views were great and the people so friendly, although quite a trek back up the hill! Rooms were very clean and the cleaners went in twice a day. The staff were all very accommodating, friendly and did their best to please during our stay. Free wifi in the reception area and bedrooms was also another plus factor. I would strongly recommend this hotel and would have no hesitation in returning to this hotel in the future.

Like everyone we booked this hotel based on the reviews on trip advisor but we could not predict just how outstanding the quality of service we would receive. From the moment we arrived we were treated like we were the only guests in the hotel. You are not a room number in this hotel they treat every guest as if they are royalty. We were on our first family holiday with our 7 month old daughter and the staff could not have been more welcoming. Our daughter got a chest infection the day after we arrived (must have caught it on the plane) and became very poorly. As a first time mum I was very distressed and the hotel staffs were an absolutely brilliant. They arranged for a private hire car to take us to a children’s hospital in the next town with a driver who was able to get us fast tracked during admission and help with the language barrier. I have never known a hotel to provide such an amazing standard of service. Every day after that the staff at the hotel checked on our daughter and really supported us. This hotel is simply the best hotel I have ever known. A special thanks from Evie goes to Massimo and his colleagues in Reception, as well as Marcelo, Nello, Giuseppe and the staff in the Restaurant. We will be back sometime in the future.

Well, we as always read through the reviews on tripadvisor and decided to give this hotel a try given its high ratings - disappointed? Not for a moment!
How best to describe the hotel, 'quaint', 'traditional', maybe but this does not do the holiday experience there justice.
The feel of the place is just super - your own table in the dining room for the stay, shown to you by the waiters on the first evening and you are openly welcomed and made to feel comfortable.
You have a menu with around five choices per course - great Italian dishes including wonderfully cooked fish options, but also 'English' dishes if you don't want to stray off the beaten track too far!
The pool area - very relaxing with no 'saggy' sunbeds here, just very comfortable loungers or upright seating. Do you need to put your towel out at 'silly o'clock' to reserve the sunbed ahead of the opposition?! No...
Could you find a cleaner pool area, a better snack bar and attentive but unfussy staff? Highly unlikely...
The room we had was 404, seaview with patio which you could have held a party on - this is what we reserved on booking and this was what we got.
So, in summary - if you want a relaxing break with super food and all delivered with unfussy but very friendly staff, then get your trip booked!
On another note, I notice a few people adding some negative comments and whilst of course this is a tiny majority and I respect their views, I would like to quickly clarify a couple of these points:
'The Hotel is 3Kms from Sorrento, so not as close as we thought.' Well the reality is the Hotel is 3Kms away from Sorrento as is noted in the main tour operator brochure, the Hotel website and on tripadvisor, so its no real secret! However, the Hotel operate a courtesy bus from 8am in the morning to 11pm at night, every hour, so 16 times a day, into the heart of Sorrento. The drop off/pick up point is 200m from the main square or 200m from the train/bus station. We coped fine...!
'The Hotel is near the road so you hear traffic noise.' Well yes it is set back from the road, we had a seaview so on the front of the Hotel nearest the road and heard..? Very little noise. We stayed here to avoid the traffic noise of Sorrento and whilst there is a road nearby this Hotel, it a'int no M25! Seriously, no issue at all.
'Limited entertainment.' Sure, again as advertised, music three times a week. If you want more then this is not the place for you. But seriously, to sit and relax in the lounge with a beer, talk to the wife and others around isn't half as bad as it sounds...!
One point not raised which I think could be is around organised trips. Whether you book through the main tour operator or through the Hotel, all the trips offered appear to leave before 7.30am. Now, whilst I am happy to go to work at 6.30am, on holiday, anything vaguely taxing before 8ish is not on my agenda! Now, if you like organised tours and the early time is not an issue, then great. However, here is the time to get a little daring without going mad....
Pompeii - get on the Hotel bus at 10.00 say, down to Sorrento by 10.10am, walk to the railway station (200yds slightly uphill), buy a return ticket to Pompeii for just over 4 euros and you are 30 minutes away. Out of the station there, 100m and you are at the entrance. Queue for an entrance ticket where upon official tour guides ask if you want a guided tour for ten euros, we did, looked at the best sites within Pompeii for two hours with a great guide and job done. Back to the station, catch a bus to Vesuvius and look at some great scenery and look into the crater, catch the bus back. Back on the train (every 30 minutes) and you are back to Sorrento. Even time for a quick 'snifter' pre-dinner and all sorted in a day without leaving before the sparrows have risen and costs half the price...
Amalfi drive - back to the railway/bus station and take a bus to Amalfi. Stops at Positano etc and it is up to you if you get off there or not. We went through to Amalfi, wonderfully scenery on route, drops you off at the harbour. Super place to explore. We then decided not to catch the bus back, but to get on a ferry back to Sorrento so we could see the coast by sea. Easy to do as kiosks on the harbour. Back to Sorrento harbour, on the hotel bus 500m away and jobs a goodun' for around 60% of the official tour price. More importantly than money, you decide when and how to do the trip and it is really easy. I speak about 10 words of Italian (ashamedly) but all the people we came into contact with spoke English and were really helpful.
Capri guided tour - nah, go to the harbour and jump on the regular ferry - easy, at your pace and cheap.
If you haven't stayed in this part of Italy before like us, give it a go, beautiful area to explore or just relax in a very nice Hotel....enjoy!

Room Tip: Go for a sea view room...worth it!
