We had an amazing honeymoon in Sorrento, largely because of the brilliant service and staff at La Solara. We stayed half board.
The hotel is situated at the top of a medium slope, our bags were picked up at the bottom of the slope and delivered to reception by an electric trolley by the porter.
On arrival we got complimentary sparking wine. Check in was very easy, we were allocated room 216, we'd paid for a sea view... the view was brilliant. We had a balcony with two chairs and a table and an incredible view of the little port of Marina di Puolo and the sea beyond. The sea was misty for our whole holiday, so we don't know if you cam see any of the surrounding bay of Naples.
Food for our entire stay was incredible. Authentic Italian every day. I would recommend items marked 'chef's choice' and regional dishes as these give you some brilliant Neapolitan dishes.
Cold drinks at the bar or poolside are supplied with complimentary peanuts.
Hot drinks are supplied with complimentary biscotti selection.
Evening meals all have a pre starter antipasti salad selection, buffet, help yourself style, so if you so wish, every meal is four courses.
If you order wine with your Evening meal and you don't finish the whole bottle in one night, the waiter will save it for you and serve it again the next day so you don't feel compelled to drink a whole bottle.
If you are half board you are able to swap evening meals for lunch. We did this when we wanted to sample restaurants in Sorrento. Lunch was tasty and huge portions!
The free hotel shuttle bus operates every hour, the first being at 07:50 every other on the hour up till 23:00. Pick up in Sorrento is a short walk from Piazza Tasso (the main square in Sorrento) and these are every quarter past the hour, the last pick up at 23:15.
The shuttle bus is reserved for La Solara guests only so isn't overly busy. It only seats 20 so in peak of the season could be over subscribed, but it certainly wasn't in late October.
We didn't rate location as excellent because the excursions, should you book any sometimes can't pick you up conveniently due to the sharp left turn that is required to get into the hotel pick up area. The turn is too sharp for large busses. This means pickups coming from Sorrento towards Massa Lubrense have to turn around and come back in the other direction. This can add ten minutes to your wait and doesn't impress the people on the coach. This was a very minor inconvenience, all in all.
The pool is nice and is said to be the only heated pool in Sorrento. I'm not sure if it actually was heated but it was ok for us to swim in October, but it did shut at sunset, which is frustrating should you wish to have a late swim. In October the pool was shut at 17:30. 22 metres long and reasonably deep, but not deep enough for diving. You can still do lengths and feel like you are exercising. Lovely on a hot afternoon.
In summary, we loved the hotel. The staff didn't know it was our honeymoon either, so we were getting the same service as everyone else. We are already planning our next visit to Sorrento and we will stay at La Solara again.
