We stayed at La Solara for two weeks, from 11-25 September, and our stay was perfect in every respect. It was our fifth stay there and we were given such a warm welcome by everyone. The majority of staff have been at La Solara for many years so we have got to know them well by now - they are a great team, and the hotel is extremely well-run.
We had a lovely room with a sea view, which was as always spotlessly clean throughout, with a large bathroom and all the facilities anyone could wish for. We also had a good-sized balcony, where it was nice to sit and relax.
The dining room is managed by Marcello (ciao Marcello!) - he, together with Nello and all the dining room staff, are so friendly and attentive. The food at La Solara has always been very good, but it seemed this year that it was even more imaginative, if that were possible. It was excellent in every respect, with plenty of choice on the menu to suit all tastes and diets. The hotel hosts a gala dinner every Sunday night, which is held round the swimming pool during fine weather, or in the dining room if the weather forecast is poor. The gala dinners are really sumptuous, and it is also a good opportunity to meet the chefs who work so hard to make them so enjoyable.
Also on the gala nights - and another two other nights in the week - the hotel has a musical duo called Lello and Carlo. They are two very talented musicians, Carlo on the piano and Lello singing and playing the drums. They have a huge repertoire of songs, many in English, and also popular and traditional Italian songs. They are always happy to play requests and let people sing with them and sometimes there is dancing too. Lello and Carlo are so friendly and nice, and always make everyone feel welcome and involved in their music. They are a real asset to the hotel, as of course is Angelo, who has been bar manager for some years now and runs a great bar.
Sorrento is a beautiful city, with so much of interest to see and do, both in the city itself and in the surrounding area. La Solara is set in a peaceful location above the city among olive groves, with lovely views over the trees to the sea. It is ideally situated, being a little away from the bustle of the city centre, but this is no inconvenience as the hotel provides a very reliable courtesy bus which runs from the hotel into town and back again each hour throughout the day from early morning until late in the evening. As Sorrento itself can be very noisy and has heavy traffic, this is a bonus!
We have stayed in many hotels around the world over the years, so we are not novices to travelling in any way, but I can honestly say La Solara really does have that 'special something' that makes a good hotel great, and that is in many ways down to having such excellent staff, who are so genuinely pleased to welcome you back. We are already looking forward to our holiday there next year - our good wishes and a big thank you to you all for making this year's stay so enjoyable :)
