“Excellent Service”
Reviewed 2 May 2011

The service in the hotel is second to none, the staff are very helpful and efficient. The restaurant was run very well and the food was always good with a good choice every night. Would definitely recommend going half board. Rooms were nice and clean, you get what you pay for room wise. As an English and Irish person we would have like tea making facilities in the room.

We booked this hotel knowing that Italian Hotels can disappoint. Not this one! Fantastic food, service and dining experience. Every member of staff, without exception, was friendly and welcoming. Standards of furnishings and cleanliness throughout the building were first class. We have no hesitation in recommending the Hotel De La Ville to any traveller to Sorrento.

We have stayed a week in Sorrento and have decided to stay at the Gtand Hotel de la Ville because its location looked nice to us, at least from Google Map!
The hotel is very well located, 5-6 minutes from the very city center (Piazza Tasso). You reach the city centre though a lemon garden which is nice.
The hotel itself is nice. Super friendly staff, always there to help. The food is perfect. No buffet here but nice italian food, local and tasty. We had a room with a view on the sea and I have to say it's a must if you're staying in Sorrento!
The only tiny negative point is there are a few steps which is not the best when you have a young baby, however it's no more than maybe 5 to get in the hotel and another 5 to get in the lobby, and the hotel staff would always help.
Would definitly recommend this place. And from wheat we saw of Sorrento, we definitly recommand a hotel in the city centre and NOT outside.

Oh and also do NOT but a WIFI card at 1.5 EUR an hour at the reception (what a rip off!!!!) there are plenty of free unprotected wifi in town and actually right outside the hotel in street VIA NIZZA.

Seriously in 2011 I still don't understand why isn't wifi free in all hotel...

The Grand Hotel de la Ville is in a quiet residential area about 15 minutes walk to the centre of Sorrento. Room are spacious and clean, with easy chairs and a large bathroom, although the tiled floors can create some noise. Rooms either face the garden area and also the residential apartments opposite or, especially from the higher floors, have views over the Bay of Naples but are also on the road side. The balconies are quite large with table and chairs and small loungers but we spent very little time on the balcony instead taking advantage of the beautiful rooftop terrace with its stunning views.

The staff were all friendly and helpful and the hotel is spotlessly clean. The quality of the food was excellent, if slightly large portions, and the restaurant staff were very good, everything overseen by the wonderful Enzo. The only problem is that the dining room isn't big enough and unless you want to eat at 7pm this then resulted in people having to queue - something that I don't feel should be happening in a 4* hotel. As a result of this we often felt that they were trying to 'rush' us through in order to make way for other diners.

Overall, though I would recommend this hotel but just be aware of the situation for evening meals.

This hotel is an acceptable choice.
The location is great, minutes from the train/bus station if you intend to travel using public transport. The main centre, Piazza de Tasso is no more than a pleasant 5-10 minute walk away.
Our room balcony boasted a lovely view over the Bay/Vesuvio and wonderfully aromatic orange and lemon groves, so do try to request a room on a higher floor that faces the front of the hotel (we were on the 4th).
In terms of cleanliness, the rooms themselves were fine, although the supply of towels changed to providing what one can only describe as (stained) tea towels after the first day! We found this rather odd but easily resolved after requesting “proper” towels.
Another reviewer has commented on how the hotel staff appears rather rigid and the focus is very much on running a profit making business and I would agree. Fair enough, the hotel is a business at the end of the day but surely not by compromising the impression that their guests take away with them?
The succinct way of describing this hotel is that if you do not have any specific requirements/requests, your stay would be pleasant enough but if the need did arise for the hotel to be flexible, I’m not sure how accommodating they would be.
Little things like being told a charge would be applied for bringing up an empty cup to the room was surprising! As the rooms have no tea/coffee making facilities, we had our own travel kettle but certainly did not expect to have to pay for the “luxury” of having an empty cup delivered to our room! We also requested if we could borrow an iron as most hotels do offer this facility but were advised the hotel deemed it too dangerous to provide one to its guests! It was however pointed out very quickly that the hotel offered an ironing service for a charge.
On checking out, we had an amount of €1.30 to pay for a quick phone call we had made from the room. Although we certainly would expect to pay this, given the almost negligible amount, had the hotel offered to waive the charge, the gesture would certainly have gone a long way.
The staff are helpful and offer you the benefit of their expertise but one certainly also felt at times that they could not wait to get you off the phone. Perhaps this is more to do with the fact that there is no separate Concierge Desk and it is the Reception staff that deal with all queries.
Our stay included breakfast and one has the option to eat either in the dining area or outside in the garden. The latter is a beautiful setting and the waiters are friendly and efficient which make up for the very average and at times, not particularly fresh buffet. There is a variety but tends to get rather repetitive as with most buffets..
The 6th floor roof terrace pool is small so I can imagine this would get extremely crowded during peak season but the view is fabulous (as long as you look towards the front!). The rear/side views are of residiential blocks of apartments. There is also a larger, ground floor pool which is overlooked by the apartments, so not terribly private.
All in all, this hotel is absolutely fine. I would give it a 7/10 for the experience. There is no wow factor as someone else has commented but it does certainly offer a pleasant enough stay.

In terms of Sorrento itself, this is a lovely town, with a friendly, welcoming community. There is such a warm and charming ambience.
There is plenty to see around the outskirts of Sorrento, various towns along the Amalfi coast which offer stunning views, Pompeii, Mount Vesuvio and Capri, so it makes it a perfect base in which to stay.
Public transport makes reaching all of these places easy and affordable, so if you don’t mind squeezing onto a bus and getting up close and personal with a fellow commuter, this just adds to the fun & charm of travelling around Sorrento. One tip which may be useful for you – do try and get hold of some timetables beforehand to help you organise your day and its worth getting to the bus/train/ferry stations well in advance as these modes of transport are extremely popular and quite often you may have to wait for the next service. The bus from Sorrento to Amalfi is an extremely busy route so I would advise getting there half an hour beforehand. Buses run every half hour. The ferry to Capri is less regular (every couple of hours), and is the only way in which to get there, so we actually arrived at the port about 45 minutes in advance of the 9.25am service.
If you are flying into Naples Airport and need to make your way to Sorrento, then I would highly recommend the bus service. The cost is €10 for a single versus a fare of €90 in a cab. The journey is an hour and 30 minutes to two hours, depending on traffic but it such a beautiful journey driving along the coast, the panaromic views make travelling on the bus a real pleasure. The bus service runs every two hours.
Sorrento is a truly beautiful place – enjoy your trip.

Dear Collegues from Trip Advaisor,

With reference to a comment “Acceptable & Pleasant enough but not amazing” published on your website on the 15/04/2011 by a member of yours , we believe that the comments are too strong we kindly ask you to add our comments. We would like to point out as follows:

We provide to clients as for the room type booked a bath sponge kit that includes: 1 bath towel cm 99 x 1.42 cm,1 bidet towel cm 38 x 55 cm and 1 hand towel cm 56x81cm. Of course each kit it is per person.

In 40 years of hotel experience we have never had any complaints about the measures of our towels which are always perfectly clean. The washing is done carefully by our own laundry.

Regarding the ironing , we would like to inform you that for safety reasons we suggest not to use the iron in the room ,also because all our tops are made of crystal, we kindly explain to our guests, instead we provide a very cheap laundry service.

We would also like to inform you that all rooms have a fully stocked mini bar and our main bar is always open and as usual there is room service for a low fee.

At the check out the guests have paid € 1.30 for phone call as from our telephone report.

All morning our buffet breakfast is served fresh and it includes cold and hot dishes , such as: sausages , potatoes, tomatoes, beans, eggs, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, poached eggs etc.

The 6th floor roof terrace is mt 420 square and it is adequate for the use .

We cannot understand how one of our guest can complain in April that it is overcrowded in high season. Any claims shouldn’t be done just with imagination.

We always pay the best attention to render the stay of our guest as enjoyable as possible and we are very sorry when they are not satisfied with their stay with us.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Kind Regards
Mario Manniello

Each year for the last 5 years we have spent our summer holiday at the De La Ville, each year we research other holidays, but keep going back to this hotel. The service is exceptional, especially in the restaurant and bar area, where the waiters and waitresses make your holiday really special. The food is amazing and the hotel accommodation is very good, relaxing, stylish and very clean. Professional, curteous and very helpful, the staff at this hotel ensure you have an excellant holiday.
