“Charming little Italian Hotel in a charming little city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2011

I found this hotel on line by accident when studying the Amalfi Coastal region. It was listed as a 5 *. I think many travelers expect a different kind of hotel for a 5*, one that is "posh" which this is not, but it was a PERFECT 5* for us!

Balcony with a view! Beautifully tiled throughout. A bath not large, but straight out of an Italian marble bath display. I wish I could have packed it up to take home! The woodwork, the furniture and the floors were gorgeous throughout. Everything is spotlessly clean. The old elevators were beautiful and worked better than most new ones. The staff was warm, friendly, helpful. One could not ask for more. The breakfasts were generous and good. The dinners, served in the large dining room, although not gourmet, were well prepared, convenient and relaxing. On a couple of evenings after eating a main meal during mid-day, we ate sandwiches with drinks in the bar - also delightful staff with good service. I do think that the notion that anyone - even gauche Americans- would choose a sandwich instead of an large evening dinner was rather a curiousity:) But we enjoyed it. In warmer weather, the outdoor garden is a perfect spot for afternoon tea, or drinks.

We love this hotel, and will stay there again when we return to Sorrento. They even follow the travelers book exchange tradition - hall table on each floor where one deposits a book when finished reading it and can choose one someone else has donated to be read. I thought that tradition had died - but not here!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony and a view:)

My wife and I enjoyed our weeks stay from the moment that we arrived at the hotel. Having read some reviews on line we were expecting a pleasant stay and we were not disappointed. Friendly reception welcome followed by our cases being taken to a spacious room with ample storage facilities. Meals were always a source of pleasure and the buffet on Wednesday was outstanding. If you had to choose the best meal of the day it would probably be breakfast but the evening food was also very good supplemented by a fine wine list. It is however the staff that make the stay most enjoyable with every level working very hard to make your stay a very pleasant experience.

Room Tip: Side room with balcony was very quiet

Stayed for a week from 13th may, hotel clean bright with great views from our room 405. It isn,t cheap, but i dont feel its expensive either, you get what you pay for the service really is great.

The food for a holiday hotel was very good, all the staff were helpful easy to to talk to and Enzo the Maitre D made us feel welcome. Geat location, a walk through the lemon gove into the piazzo tasso is lovely, you have the bay of naples to look over with vesuvio in the distance, really beautiful location, sorrent itself is wonderful, some advice dont book the costly rep tours getting a train to Pompeii and a public bus to vesuvio is SO EASY and is very cheap, If you can hire your own boat 150 to 200 euros for a day and go to Capri (via some bay hoping yourself) its superb !

would we go again to this hotel - YES !!!!

The first thing I would like to say about this hotel is that the staff are amazing! We've found that in Italy that quite often the staff can be more interested in their newspaper than you as a costumer but at the hotel de la ville you are always made to feel welcome! The people at the reception are only too glad to help you, even go the extra mile to help! We had an early start on one of our mornings and apart from calling the tour company to confirm our booking for us, the man then offered us a packed breakfast because we were going to be leaving before breakfast started. The rest of the staff take the time to get to know you and we shared many a laugh with the barman. Enzo and his restaurant staff were excellent, very reasonably priced for the quality. Apart from the staff the facilities and rooms are excellent and the hotel is located very close to the station an centre of town. Overall An excellent and comfortable experience!

Everything about our stay was excellent. The staff through out the Hotel were very helpful and friendly. We would especially like to complement the restaurant staff and the kitchen staff for their efficiency and quality of food. The rooms were immaculate as was the rest of the hotel. The location was ideal for Sorrento centre and surrounding areas.
We can only highlight positives about this hotel.

I have just returned from a 3 night break at this hotel with 2 friends. Its location is excellent (it is near the station and the town is indeed about a ten minute walk)- but - as other reviews have said splash out on a front view room on floor 4 or above - well worth it. Fantastic rooms - balcony with great view - clean and look newly painted. We had room 408 with triple beds and it couldn't have been better.
The dining room is vast and well run with great food and fantastic breakfasts. The reception and communal areas including the rooftop pool are also impressive. I have seldom stayed in such a 'clean' hotel - the floors gleam!!
SO - you may ask - what makes my review a four not a five!! I will specify a couple of examples - petty maybe on their own but give a feel for why this hotel is great but somehow just misses something (very hard to put your finger on it). The staff are certainly friendly but reception staff in particular could be more efficient and knowledgable. Luckily i had been to sorrento before and i asked at the desk if we could book a private amalfi drive day for the tuesday. I was told that it only 'went' on a monday and another day but not tuesdays. Confusing!!!! The staff member agreed to ring and try and sort out a tuesday trip and then fed back that it would be 400 euro's for 3 of us in a minibus!!!!! I declined. I then arranged the trip privately - 190 euro's for a day in a mercedes with english speaking fantastic guide!!!! AND - here we have the 'ambience issue'...............i realise that as others have said this is a hotel which caters in the main for package tour groups. Not a problem but if you are looking for a hotel with personal service eg address you by name etc and also go out of their way to treat you PERSONALLY then this is not for you. Yes - i am being picky maybe but it is mportant to mention - a definite package holiday feel. Also - the drinks and wine are expensive - 19 euro's for a bottle one evening ( they offer to keep your bottle for you and carry it over to the next night!!!!!). One other example of the type of minor niggles - towels - yes - wierd - as others have said - we were 3 in the room but by day 2 only TWO towels were being left for us BUT an abundance of 'teatowels' in the bathroom!!!!!!!
One final point - because the holiday has been great and the hotel IS good but if you are a light sleeper proceed with caution!!!!!!! My companions are heavy sleepers and i should say they have no complaints BUT if you are a light sleeper you can hear every single noise, toilet flushing, shutters opening and closing - this hotel has been the worst for noise insulation i have ever encountered. NOT sensible to move rooms even as this will affect the whole building and would be worse if you were above dining room or recep.
SO - great place but 'it is what it is' - a hotel which is clean and beautiful but a 'package tour' attitude. BUT ..........we arrived at midnight to find a welcome cold meal in our room - a BIG plus and a great touch!

Room Tip: Front view with balcony and above or on 4th floor

We stayed here from 9th may for 7 nights. It was amazing, the food was great and the hotel was gorgeous. I am a travel agent and studied many hotels in sorrento and finally chose this one. What a good choice it was!!!!! We will be going back, the town its self is very pretty and the food delicious.
