“as great as before”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2011

We travelled to Sorrento for our daughters Wedding, and decided to stay in the Grand Hotel De La Ville as we had done 6 years ago. Its not called the Grand Hotel for nothing and the service, decor and food was as excellent as the last time. The rooms are even more plush than before and the staff are so friendly they make the holiday even more special. The Maitre-De, Enzo is first class but it would be wrong to single out one member of staff really, as they are all special. Highly Recommended

We would not normally write a review but have been prompted to do so having read some of the poor reviews on this site which quite clearly are undeserved!! We are frequent travellers both for business and pleasure and can honestly say this is one of the best hotels that we have stayed in. The service from Enzo, Carmine and all their staff ( I could list them all by name) is second to none. They are nothing but helpful, friendly and willing to advise on the menu which is extensive for a hotel providing half board for around 150 people each day. The food arrives promptly and is always hot and very tasty. There is also an A La Carte Menu for those special occassions. It was our Wedding Anniversay on this visit and Enzo took time to come up with a special menu for us and decorated our table. All the other staff had been made aware of our anniversary and came to congratulate us. The Somerlier Isadoro was particularly helpful in advising us on a suitable wine to compliment our meal each evening and could not have been more helpful. There is a huge choice at breakfast time from cereals, fruit, pastries, breads as well as cooked food. The staff in the bars,Gino, Flora, Bruno and Pepe all took time to talk to us and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was immaculate and very clean and although the rear of the hotel does back onto a residential area, the gardens it overlooks are well tended. The location is so close to the town and the coast that not having a view at the back is not a problem, in fact we ask for the same room every year. The hotel public areas are very clean as are the two pools and surrounding areas. The rooftop pool has stunning views across the Bay of Naples. We have no idea why this hotel has anything but great reviews, for us it is like visiting old friends each time we go back. Kevin and Barbara Mason (Mr Moustache and Blondie)

Room Tip: 4th/5th floor front great views

My wife and I went for our sons wedding. My in laws and the brides parents and grandparents also stayed there.

We had a lovely stay at the hotel, the staff were friendly and helpful; the food was of a generally high standard and the waiter service in the dining room, overseen by Enzio was run in an extremely efficient manner. We were always greeted promptly and shown to our seats and I couldn't believe the speed at which the 3 courses were delivered to the table.

The hotel was clean and well maintained and the bedroom/bathroom was cleaned daily.
We had a problem with the air con, but it was fixed quite quickly.

The staff were all very helpful and it felt as though they genuinely enjoyed their work and wanted to make our stay as pleasant as possible.

Special mention has to go to Flora in the rooftop bar. She couldn't do enough for us and is a really lovelly person.

My only criticism and I'm being picky here, is that the bread rolls were as tough as old boots. I know that that is how they were supposed to be, but all I can say is that Italians must have the strongest teeth in europe!

We had a fantastic time and I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone thinking of going to Sorrento.

I booked this hotel last November with Thomson but think we must have been at the bottom of the pile for room allocation. We had a standard room with a 'view' of the back of two blocks of flats. The balcony just about housed the small round table and two chairs and the room was small and dull with worn furniture-the whole room was tired and shabby. When I said we weren't happy with the room the receptionist shrugged her shoulders and said 'You should have booked a seaview.' We weren't the only guests with the same complaint. On the plus side, the hotel was clean, the food was good and the serving staff were very friendly. The room we were given to change in on our last day was lovely but beware - part of this hotel is in dire need of renovation. The only thing four star about this hotel is the price.

Outstanding service from all the staff, who were polite and humorous. Excellent location and a beautiful room with a view of Vesuvius. Amazing service in the dining room with a good choice of food and wine. Perfect choice for a holiday with a range of stunning sights to see, but very busy!

We had a very disappointing stay and cannot recommend it to anyone looking for a 4-star experience with decent food.

Our room was at back of hotel so the view from our balcony was of some private apartments opposite. If you wanted to sit on balcony you had to watch the apartments owner washing hanging over their balcony opposite. People need to be aware of this. The room was very unwelcoming. the first thing we noticed was a sign telling you not to put your own drinks or food in the fridge. The room was clean with a good and friendly maid service

The food was very average at best. It lacked any real flavour. There was nothing special about the food for dinner on any evening we ate there. We ate their 4 nights out of 7 as we were half board but eventually we decide to pay extra and go outside the hotel. The salad was the same boring choice of tomato, cucumber and radish with lettuce and one choice of salad dressing. One evening, we ordered a omellete which was like rubber. The vegtable were also often overcooked and had no flavor. The chef should have been embarassed to send this level of food out of his kitchen.

The wine waiter was extremeley unfriendly and unhelpful. One night we never ordered wine and you could hear him muttering something about us. Many of the other waiters also lacked basic manner and were not polite when addressing customer using the word "You" rather than 'Sir" or "Madame"

Breakfast was extremely disappointing and exactly the same every day. There was always a very poor selection of cheses and hams. Also offered for breakfast was the previous evenings left over desserts. One day, a guest asked tehe checf for a fried egg which the chef broke the yoke and overcooked. The chef then tried to give this to the guest which the guest refusd to take. Again, any half decent chef can fry a egg and also knows when it is bad and not to serve it.

In the bar we asked for a coffe one night. When it came it was like water. When we asked for a new one it was a little better. The excuse we got from the Bar Manager is "We make coffee to suit the Englihsh people who never like it strong".
