Grand Hotel De La Ville Sorrento
Ranked #15 of 100 Hotels in Sorrento
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 7 August 2011

We have just returned from 2 weeks Half Board at the Grand Hotel De La Ville in Sorrento, staying between 22/07/11 & 05/08/11. A family of four with 2 children aged 14 & 12 in a twin room on the first floor.

On the first night we arrived late at approx 2130 hours but the Hotel had kept the Restaurant open for ourselves and another family to enjoy our evening meal. The bags were taken upstairs to our room for us.

First impressions of the hotel room were good, if a little cramped with a king size bed and two single beds pushed along one side of the room but there was enough wardrobe space. We were lucky enough to have a sea view but it could be a little noisy with the comings and goings through the main entrance of the hotel and traffic noise.

The air conditioning is excellent with no extra charge. The room safe was 3 euros a day. The internet was 4 euros for 30 mins. The television in the room had some English channels and sky movies which our children enjoyed.

I cannot praise Enzo, the hotel waiters and chambermaids highly enough. The waiters were great with the children and they both thoroughly enjoyed their evening meals. Over the 14 nights the menu was varied and never repeated. The Maitre 'D would recommend dishes if we were having difficulty choosing. Even my daughter found something she enjoyed and she is quite a fussy eater.

The breakfast buffet has lots of choice which I will not list as this can be seen from other reviews. All 4 of us looked forward to breakfast. We were able to choose whether we sat inside or outside each morning

The hotel provides towels for both pools at no charge, so we did not need the beach towels that we took with us. You can also use the bathing platform area of the nearby Royal Hotel where you can swim in the sea - they also provide towels at no charge.

We did have to buy a travel kettle on the 3rd day as there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms and found it expensive to keep buying coffees at the bar. We found it much cheaper to buy items in a nearby Supermarket.

Both pools were well maintained and we had no problems getting loungers.

Beware of the room bill, you do get in the habit of charging evening drinks to your room and it comes as quite a shock at the end of the holiday when the bill is waiting for you (the staff at reception will give you a printout, when asked, which will allow you to keep an eye on your current total).

The Entertainment was the same each week and we did feel a little pressured to buy drinks whilst watching the acts. We watched them the first week but did not bother on the second week.

Overall, a very enjoyable holiday with lots to see.

Room Tip: Best Views from Rooms at front of Hotel, especially 4th floor and above.

My family and I had a wonderful 2 weeks at the De La Ville. It was very relaxing and with a lovely atmosphere. The staff were all very accommodating especially Enzo and his team in the restaurant. We looked forward to dinner every evening knowing the service would be first class and very professional. The waiters made us feel very welcome with their banter and personal service. The food was also very good at dinner and breakfast. (I thought the chilled Prosecco on the breakfast buffet was a lovely touch). We had a couple of long day excursions and were given a picnic breakfast and lunch to take with us. We did think the drinks were very expensive but there is a good supermarket in the town for stocking up.
The rooms were very nice and the bed was so comfortable. As someone who doesn't usually sleep very well away from home, I can honestly say I had the best two weeks of sleep for a long while.
The safe in the room was nice and big but did resent paying 3 euros a night to use it. There is no fridge but there is a mini bar in the room and you are not supposed to use it for you own use. A fridge would have been very useful.
We used the pool area on the roof and although it was peak season we never had any problem with getting sun loungers for the four of us. The pool was lovely and cool for very hot days. The views from here were outstanding and would recommend watching the sunset from here.
I would recommend the train to get to Pompeii ect. However if anyone is thinking of taking the Amalfi drive please be aware of the very winding road and if you are prone to travel sickness it is worth taking some travel medication beforehand. My son was sick everywhere and my husband felt very sick on the journey there and back. We went to Amalfi, (which was lovely) however it put us off going to other places along the Amalfi drive.
Sorrento itself was lovely, with lots of shops and restaurants and very pretty streets to explore. Only a few minutes walk from the De La Ville.
I would love to come back someday.

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear are overlooked by flats and there is often music from the roof terrace.

We cannot fault the De La Ville. We used the hotel for our wedding party and from start to finish we had brilliant, friendly service.
Although not situated in the heart of Sorrento itself, it's an easy 10 min walk from the station and the Piazzo Tasso.
Marianna, the reservations manager was friendly and accommadating with the requests for all of our guests. Our rates included breakfast, which was substantial and the staff were very friendly every morning. As were all of the staff on reception, in the bars as well as the cleaning staff - they really made our stay.
The rooms are delightful, clean and spacious. Air conditioning, balcony, tiled floors, marble bathrooms (with good showers) and the BEST black out shades.
Both pools are clean and were never over busy, umbrellas were available and bar service too.
The evening entertainment was a bit more European that we're used to, but still adds to the experience. The kids (teenagers) loved the wifi - the best invesment of the holiday €15 for 7 days. Happy facebookers!
We loved it - as did all of our guests & we hated to leave and will definitely go back on an anniversary visit.

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the de La Ville and cannot fault it despite some other people finding some faults. The staff were extremely polite and treated us as family even though it was our first time there. Enzo and the dinning room team were outstanding and their behaviour was immpecable. We couldn't find fault with the food and the prices for the wine were good value for the quality. We used a nearby laundry and left our travel iron in full view in the room and had no problem from the maid. All the bar prices were readily available and yes, you can get drinks etc cheaper outside the hotel, but the service and convenience make it worthwhile, and again, you are free to choose.

During dinner one evening I was able to chat to one of the owners who was making one of his frequent inspections of the place (during which there was absolutely NO difference to the standards of food or service). Seeing this commitment to ensuring high standards made me feel very glad that we had opted to stay here.

We will definitely be coming back and woulkd recommend it to anyone

Positives.
Extremely warm and friendly atmosphere at hotel.
Staff throughout hotel-very helpful and cheerful.
Great breakfasts.
Rooms spacious, well equipped and very clean.
Location - close to centre.
Negatives.
Evening meals- disappointing. Quality has very definitely declined since our last stay 4 years ago. Gala dinner - nothing like the feast served up 4 years ago, just lots of cheap fillers with a couple of decent items. Sadly anyone who turned up later in the evening of the Gala dinner was to find nothing but the fillers as once the decent items( parma ham and salmon)had gone it was not replenished.
Built up area where hotel backs onto residential apts so little privacy if you think of sitting out on the balcony. Not a pretty view to say the least. Noisy dogs can be heard barking during day and night!
Overall we enjoyed our stay but would not return.

Room Tip: Stay at sister hotel,The Royal, which overlooks the sea.

I'll try to give a balanced view about many aspects
Rooms, we have two, both on the fifth floor, one prestigue with sea view is a good size and nice view but you do have a busy one way street below you with travel noise and the roof top sunbathing/pool area directly above so can be noisy from both directions. Room with no sea view looks directly onto flats opposite and therefore could be in any inner city rather than on the coast! Rooms are cleaned well but like other reviewers the scraping of furniture above you goes on and on from 7-9 every morning when the maids are cleaning.
Pools, the rooftop pool is just a dipping pool, it's a bit cold but fine for now when it's 30C outside. People leave their towels on loungers for hours and just go off for lunch, even another pub down the street consequently leaving others to lay on the floor on towels or use deck chairs. the one barman seems to go off for lunch for 45 mins with no replacement so guest can't get drinks or towels if he hasn't left any on the bar when he goes off. the big pool downstairs is so ugly, completely overlooked by horrible buildings and most adults don't bother using it because of this unless you want to swim lengths.
Restaurant food, Breakfast is ok, it's buffet style but the same everyday with a chef on a small egg station cooking fried and poached eggs, however the poached eggs yesterday had been boiling in water for ages and were basically hard boiled. The waiting staff are fast and relatively efficient at breakfast, however dinner last night was a disaster! We are b&b only but with prestigue room get one voucher for two people to have an evening meal (plus free wifi and free safe) We booked for seven pm and arrived downstairs at 7.10pm to a queue, (never a good sign), we had booked a table outside, waited 20 mins for anyone to come take our order and at that point asked to be moved inside as kitchens were right next to us and really noisy. We were given a table inside and in the space of that 20 mins, the restaurant was completely full with 150 covers!! There were literally waiters running around. We were given an amuse-bouche that was fried dough and was horrible! Then the wine was just plonked in the middle of the table as they were too busy to poor it. Our starters came, The saffron risotto was under cooked, dry and tasteless, the worst I have ever tasted, we left it, the waitress asked if it was ok and I said no. Main courses came and I ordered salmon, this time over cooked and bland bland bland. I left it again and didn't even take the dessert as didn't want to try a fourth plate of food! It might actually be better if the dining room was buffet style as the waiters struggle with the amount of people in the dining room all at once. The staff are very nice but the food is obviously cooked in huge batches and just left warm in the kitchens and no one can be tasting the food. The three courses cost 24 Euros and really feel like Ikea type food (not knocking Ikea) Thankfully we are not half board as I couldn't eat from the set dinner menu again! We did eat other food from the smaller snack menu, one course each on our first night after 9pm, the service was much better (less rushed) and the food cooked to order.
Also the same bread rolls plus potatoes and tomatoes that were at the dinner last night were on the breakfast buffet this morning!

Room Tip: Go for high sea view room, it's extra but much better!
