“Best Hotel I have ever stayed in”
Reviewed 2 September 2011

This is the third time we have stayed at the De La Ville and there is nowhere else we would even consider when going to Sorrento. I have been fortunate to travel quite a bit and have stayed in many hotels in the UK, Europe and the US and by far, in my opinion the De La Ville beats them all. Every single member of the hotel staff greets you like a friend, whether it be the reception staff, the cleaners, the porters or the restaurant/bar staff.
The hotel is immaculate and spotless. The cleaners always check that it is okay to clean your room and if they know you are in the room they will ask reception to contact you by phone, they don't barge in like many others I have stayed in. The rooms are great. Our room had a view over the Bay of Naples and is truly amazing - it is very spacious. However we were given a courtesy room on the day we left - our flight was not until the evening so we could have the opportunity to freshen up (it was 39 degs!) - this was a standard room and certainly plenty of room for a couple.
The food is tremendous, they have fabulous chefs and the staff are incredible - from the Maitre D, Enzo, who escorted my mother to the table every night, his Deputy Carmine, Salvatore, Guiseppe and all the waiters, they made you feel welcome and important.
We were half board - the buffet breakfast was plentiful and there is plenty of variety and choice for the evening meal. One piece of advice though - don't go there if you are on a diet - the servings are huge!
Good location for hotel - just slightly off the main road but only a few minutes walk to the centre and the buzz and noise. Plenty to do and see in Sorrento and the surrounding area. As someone once said "I'll be back" and to the De La Ville

Room Tip: It is a bit more expensive but the rooms with sea view are well worth it. Views are amazing - acros...

From the moment we were greeted by Annalisa on reception until the day we left we were constantly impressed by the warmth, friendliness, and desire to make our holiday enjoyable from every member of staff that we met. That included not just the "front line" staff such as the waiters but also the cleaners we encountered in the corridors who never failed to cheerfully greet us. It was noticeable that many departing guests deliberately sought out staff to thank them and without doubt the staff are a major asset for this hotel. Our standard room was spotlessly clean and had a small terrace overlooking the family swimming pool. It was not a great view but as we spent most days sightseeing this was not an issue and on the odd occasion we were back early we went to the lovely roof terrace where again we were impressed by the ample supply of sunbeds and deckchairs. Evening food was good but I agree with others who say perhaps not up to restaurant standard although still good value and still most enjoyable. Having said that the buffets that they laid on were exceptional and this from somebody who normally hates buffets! Breakfast was good with plenty to choose from including hot food and eggs cooked to order. Worth trying for a lunch time treat is the sister restaurant Parruchiano in the town centre where you can indulge in for example canneloni whilst surrounded by orange and lemon trees. Location of the hotel is excellent - it is in a quiet area just on the edge of the town centre and only a short stroll to the bus and rail station. This meant that it was very easy to get to all the main sites in and around sorrento including pompeii, herculaneum, positania (get to bus station early to ensure seat on right hand side of bus and stunning views of Amalfi coast line). Also easy to walk from hotel to port to catch ferry to Capri but walk back which is uphill is quite strenuous! Bottom line is that there is no need to book expensive trips with tour operators - everywhere is very easy to get to. Overall the hotel is without question one of the best we have stayed in at this price range and is thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: Unless rooms with a view important to you standard rooms are perfectly adequate.

We have just returned from a two week holiday at the Grand Hotel De La Ville and have nothing but praise for the hotel and the staff. The hotel is bright and spacious, meticulously clean and well maintained. The outstanding featue of the De La Ville is undoubtedly its staff. We have never stayed anywhere where there is such a happy atmosphere among the staff. This is reflected in their first class customer care, nothing is too much trouble, we were made to feel very welcome and every effort was made to ensure we had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. All the staff from Marianna and her front of house team, dining room staff, bar staff, cleaning staff were exceptional in the way they carried out their duties, which was always in a courteous, friendly and helpful manner.
We had a lovely room which overlooked the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The hotel is well placed to take a short walk into Sorrento which is a lively town with plenty of good shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

Special mention must be made of the restaurant and the restaurant staff. The food is first class, we chose to eat there most nights. The menu changes daily and always has a great mix of local and international dishes and the wine list has some good local wines. We found it to be excellent value for money. The breakfast buffet is diverse and well considered, especially the freshly cooked eggs. Enzo the Matre D has a great team. Enzo, Carmine, Guiseppe and the rest of the team made every dining experience a pleasure and a joy.

The rooftop solarium and pool suited us perfectly. The hotel has two pools, a good size family pool on the ground floor and the smaller pool on the roof which is not really big enough to swim in. Families tended to use the bigger pool, therefore the rooftop solarium and pool was always peaceful and quiet. Sunbeds and parasols are plentiful and there was none of the scamble for sunbeds that sometimes accompanies holidays abroad.

Sorrento is perfectly placed to take excursions or local transport to all the historical sites and tourist attractions. We would definitely return.

Room Tip: We negotiated the price for our room and felt we got good value for money.

We have stayed in many luxurious hotels world wide.
We were in Italy for my daughters wedding.
For all round performance i.e. accommodtion, food, bar and particularly the staff, this has to be tha best hotel I have stayed in anywhere.
All the restuarants in the hotel are well run by Enzo and his deputy Carmine.
The quality of the meals was good with plenty to choose from.
The bar too was well run by Gino with the help of Flora and Bruno.
Great hotel in a quiet location not far from Piazza Tasso.
Well woth considering if you are looking for a holiday in Sorrento

Room Tip: The room was good similar to most hotels i.e. with on suite bath with shower.

First of all let me say we had a lovely 2 weeks holiday -but perhaps 10 days would have been enough ! Staff overall were friendly/helpful particularly on reception especially Alfonso. Had a problem with the room aircon control - couldnt get it lower than 22deg (it originally showed 24deg - phew - nice & warm). Then during the night its turned off so just the fan blows. The hotel group website states ; "individually adjustable " NOT TRUE - it is locked at 22deg from reception. We complained to them that was not acceptable and we expected it to be controlled by us, they then programmed it to 16.5deg and told them leave it on all night ! Outside it was 26deg and during day 30-32deg. I have emailed the head office to complain and asked them to tell the truth ! After saying that my husband emailed them a week prior to request a nice room as it was a special occasion of my 65th birthday. We had booked a standard room and were pleasantly surprised upon arrival to be a allocated side sea view room (ours was no. 102), looking across to the bay of Naples and Vesuvius and down below garden area with orange trees. I will try not to repeat what others have said before as it can become boring and you won't read the remainder of my review ! Rooms/hotel cleaned beautifully and on one occasion we on the balcony having a cuppa when the maid wanted to clean our room - she didn't knock and barge in like Spain but got reception to ring us and check it was ok for her to enter. Loved the electric blinds where you press button continuously to close/open and keep pressing until all the little slats close up so you can choose how dark/light you want your room !. One good idea there - along your corridor away from lifts there was a marble topped table where people vacating put unwanted stuff ie. sunhats/lotion/books etc - I put out an evening bag I hadn't used, sunhat and 2 sun tops (not worn) and they all disappeared within an hour - recycling, great ! Room keyfob very old fashioned - heavy disc with yale room key and metal rod type key to put in electric slot - haven't upgraded to key cards yet ! Food very good - not fantastic -didn't like some of the vegetables presented likes aubergines and similar, we do like to select our own and portion size. Starters quite large portions, not so for main course, not what I would call mansize. Must say - still prefer buffet style, although it was a nice change to be served. Yes, Carmine & Enzio in dining room are very friendly (sometimes we thought Enzio too much - not professional )- I don't need my handshook everytime I enter for my evening meal - perhaps a bit over the top ! If you require pepper/parmesan then you will have to ask for it each time as only salt on tables. Some days if you are down later than 7.45 pm then you may miss out on some starters/desserts, which were mainly gateaux of various types but having said that the pannacotta and peach melba were delicious, and what gets left over goes onto the breakfast table next morning. Couldn't believe one day the ice cream had run out - this is Italy ? Not impressed with breakfast, some mornings the cereal bowls were empty, not a great choice and cooked breakfast was basic, always a queue waiting as eggs were cooked to order (teaplate size plates for this). Best day was Gala Buffet Evening, much more choice really enjoyed that. We ate lunch sometimes in Piazza Lauro a 5 min walk from hotel in a small shopping square thru a little park opposite the sister hotel The Royal. Had lasagne and spagbol in the Mayflower Ristorante/bar - lovely food - service/waiters indifferent, oh and they add a 1 euro charge per person on the bill. Also there is The Square - where waiters will hold a conversation with you and do lovely lattes & cakes etc - nice place to watch the world go by.Regularly visited the Fauno Bar in the main Piazza Tasso, not cheap but nice coffees/beers - they give you free nibbles with them but dont bother with the cocktails, too expensve and rubbish ! They have a no smoking section at the rear to the right - just ask when being escorted to seat - don't try and just sit down anywhere ! Went to Positano on the local bus - station opposite Piazza Lauro, enjoyed it but of course extremely busy for time of year as was Capri/Anacapri trip taken with First Choice tours, lots of queues and option there to take chairlift - that was scary, single seats with hinged arm that laid across your front touching the other armrest (not locked/held in position) wouldn't pass any UK health & safety laws) but fantastic !. Loved the little Sorrento train that runs through the town all day and evening only 6 euros each including earphones you plug into seat in front to get commentary as to what you are seeing etc. = excellent value !! If you get the chance to go on the free walking tour with your rep, please do so, as this invaluable and get free tasters Limonchello/wine/ice cream and whilst there you can pick up a Fauno Bar discount card, so if you go there to eat or even just to get a couple of coffees show card AT TIME OF ORDERING and they will knock off 10% - saved a lot of cash over two weeks ! The walk was over 2 hours so take some water/good shoes/hat, really enjoyed it and our rep Temi was brilliant ! Finally - Naples airport - what a joke - thought we were in a 70's timewarp - return journey delayed by 50 mins in tunnel as Italians leaving the local beaches held up traffic and got to the airport - only cakes left - no sandwiches ! Would we go back - yes but at different time of year when its less crowded !

Room Tip: Emailed hotel a week prior and told them it was my 65 Birthday and they gave us a side sea view roo...

Stayed for a week in August with two children aged 11 and 13. Hotel is well run and very clean. Staff very friendly as already mentioned in most other reviews. Paid extra for a room with a sea view which really was a view to remember. Weather was very hot but the air conditioning in the room made it feel like England !. Made use of both swimming pools, the one on the roof had lovely views but the downstairs one was more suitable for the children. The one spoiler was that people still left towels on sunbeds and went off for hours even though the hotel does have a notice saying they would be removed. It didn't matter too much as there were usually enough sunbeds spare anyway. Breakfast buffet was quite good with a pretty good choice of hot and cold food. Evening meal choice was good with something to suit most tastes even quite fussy children, some very nice local food. ( don't expect chicken nuggets or burgers). Would recommend this hotel for couples of all ages or families with older children. The location was really good, a short walk from the shops and bars etc. but quiet at the same time. Was amazed at the amount of people that had visited again and again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a ront sea view room on one of the upper floors , fourth or fifth.

I have stayed here before but my wife and daughter hadn't and I can say that we were all suitably impressed. Both the decor and cleanliness were excellent. The food was superb and Enzo and his team worked very hard to ensure that everything was ok. We used both the rooftop pool and the ground floor pool preferring the latter as it was better for children. There were plenty of sunbeds and the pool was not too packed. My daughter was impressed with the third bed as normally in most hotels they are a put you up. Here the bed was very comfortable.Check in was well organised and all of the staff were very friendly. One small but good feature was an english 3 pin socket in the bedroom which came in useful. The gala dinner for Ferragosta was excellent and a lot of work had gone into presenting the food. The entertainment orgainsed in the evening was also very good.
