“Great location, great staff and room....what's not to like ?”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

We were looking forward to out trip to The Amalfi Coast and we're not disappointed in any respect......albeit that the hire car was " an experience" in itself !

The Grand Hotel could not have been a better base, just a few minutes walk from the main square and the plethora of really good eating places? Our room was a good size double and was clean and well appointed. The little balcony also gave to opportunity to admire the views. The rest of the hotel was also clearly well looked after. I had noted in other reviews that there were suggestions that the hotel had seen better days.....I completely disagree, it was fresh, light and airy whilst still being traditional.....nothing wrong with that. I would say that perhaps the dinner menu is a little too traditional though ... but it is good to feel that the restaurant staff take pride in what they do. The views of the bay and Vesuvius from the swimming pool deck were fabulous.

The staff were friendly and very competent and the valet parking worked like a treat.

The subject of parking raises the whole concept of driving in Italy....more specifically driving in Naples/The Amalfi region. These guys take Italian driving to a whole new level ! I can only assume that the curators of Super Mario Cart came up with the idea following a drive from Sorrento to Positano ! Suicidal scooter riders ( one girl came around a hairpin bend on the road side of the road....whilst doing up her helmet !), people parking cars and buses anywhere in order to get a look at the views, car doors being opened randomly as you drive past...with you having only just allowed room to scrape past in the first place ....because the guy with the scooter tricycle thing appears to be heading straight for you. Then throw into the mix the Granny who decides to lurch across the road......10 metres before the zebra crossing ! All that was missing was a Gorilla on a go-cart ! All of this probably explains why our hire car a (PINK Renualt Twingo) looked like it had been hired by Nellie the Elephant previously . Rather like a survivor of some demolition derby.

Finally, on the topic of driving. Getting from the airport to Sorrento was a doddle. Finding the Airport from the A3 coming back was a nightmare ! If you miss the tiny sign you are absolutely stuffed......and for some reason car hire firms don't seem to have maps any more. Watch out .

Do go to the region and do go to this hotel . Get a taxi to and from the airport and hire a scooter to get around.....if you can't beat em.

Dear Guest,

We are really glad to read you review on TripAdvisor.

Your description of “traffic problem” are very realistic, and this is the reason that a lot of guests choose Grand Hotel De La Ville as perfect base to move around. Our strategic position, 10 minutes walking from the main square and few steps from the train and bus station are the best to enjoy all the Sorrento and Amalfi coasts without stress.

We are also delighted to know that you enjoyed the style of our Hotel, as our service.

Thanking you once again for recommending us, we really do hope to see you soon in Sorrento.

Kindest regards

We stayed at this hotel for one week 14th to 21th october 2013.What can I say - its was a total pleasure. The staff are so lovely and everyone is so helpful. The restaurant is beautiful and the service is very good Enzo - the manager is a delight and really cares that you have enjoyed your meal. The breakfast is superb lots of choice and you can sit out in the lemon grove garden which is great - tea and coffee is good and again service is very good. The upstairs pool/bar area is a delight with an amazing view and the perfect place at the end of the day to sit with a drink and just relax. The service is also great in the bar and i loved their cocktails often on a cut price offer even better!.The hotel is in a perfect position to walk into the town. The rooms are very clean and comfortable - we had a massive bed!.We left early in the morning on our return and the hotel even gave as a packed breakfast. We will return and we had a great week chilling out.

We stayed two nights at the Grand Hotel De La Ville in Sorrento, Italy and enjoyed every minute of it! It had a quiet location within easy walking of the main squares and attractions. The staff was friendly and helpful and the breakfast buffet was very delicious. We throughly enjoyed the views from our balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples! Would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others!

We stayed at this hotel for ten days in October. Lucky with weather. Hotel is excellent, staff friendly and helpful. Our bedroom was on the 3rd floor - room 301. Large double bed, lovely furniture and fittings. Linen changed at least 3 times. The pool area on the top floor is a lovely place to view the bay of Naples. Didn't try the pool, heard people say it was cold, but that is to be expected in October and didn't affect us.

The breakfast was very good, only little moan is the evenings meals weren't always up to the mark. The staff in the dining room and fabulous, especially Enzo, Carmine and Salvatore who we seemed to deal with the most.
Sorrento town is a about a ten, fifteen minute walk away. Plenty going on there. Mind the traffic, they don't recognize crossings and you take your life in your hand when you try and get across a road.
We caught the jet boat to Capri, which costs 35 euros plus, return. We were told about getting the furnicular which is very cheap, to the top and walk back down to the harbour. The walk is on the main street by the post office, and is a steady walk back. When you get off the boat, you do not return to Sorrento in the same place, need to go to the right when you obtain tickets for the furnicular and they will inform you of the place to catch the ship back.

You can catch the Blue bus which is by the train station to the Amalfi coast, which costs 7.60 euros return. Takes nearly 2 hours, quite a journey. Make sure you can get a seat, would not like to have to hang on round those bends. After we had done this, we were told Ravello is a beautiful place which is further on, and you need to get another bus, but we missed that.

We also took the train to Herculaneu scavi . 3.50 euros return, this was on a weekend, don't know if it is less on a weekday. When you get off the train, walk right down the town to the bottom. If you are aged over 65 or a student, take identity with you and entry is then free.
The best meal we had was at L'Antica Trattoria on via P R Giuliiani. Service and food taste fabulous. Bit pricey, but then everything is now.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the garden. Probably a higher floor would have been good.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for spending your time writing this wonderful review.

We are very please to know that you enjoyed your stay with us and appreciated the traditional inlaid wooden furniture in our rooms.

October this year has been very pleasant with good weather and sun to let enjoy also the Roof top Solarium and pool area, that is an adding value also if only to sunbathing.

Looking forward to welcoming you again soon here in Sorrento

Best regards

We have been to Sorrento several times in the last 25 years and apart from the number of tourists, it seems that nothing changes in this wonderful and enchanting part of the world. No-one should ever want to change it! During our visits we have stayed in different hotels all with their own individual charm, including one in Marina Grande, the heart of Sorrento and a must see. It is an artist's dream. But for position, service, facilities and comfort, the Grand Hotel De La Ville has everything you want in an hotel and more.

Set opposite a lemon grove within easy walking distance of the bus and train station (public transport is cheap and a holiday experience you will remember), the main square and the "drains" shopping streets in one direction. In the other direction, a nice walk around Sant'Agnello with its stunning views of Sorrento and Vesuvius. The Hotel De la Ville is the perfect base for getting about the bays of Naples and Salerno and the treasures they have on offer. What warms you to the hotel is the impeccable service you receive, particularly from the reception, bar and primarily the restaurant staff. First impressions do count and in this case we were not disappointed. We ate every day in comfort and style. Enzo and his team were attentive but not over the top, so we were able to relax and enjoy the dishes we chose. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice of cold and hot dishes. There was a wide choice of menu at dinner and we tried most of the dishes, all were delicious and freshly cooked. The fruit salad was really good and refreshing after a hearty starter and main course. It really was a pleasure to eat in the restaurant.

This is not a "stuffy, old fashioned" hotel, it is classy, comfortable and both guest rooms and public areas are spotlessly clean. All the staff are professional and friendly from the porter to the cleaner and nothing is too much for them. No wonder guests return to the De La Ville as we intend to do in future. This is one hotel you can safely recommend to anyone.

We never tire of Sorrento, its beautiful scenery, the food and the people who make a wonderful experience for any traveller. No-one could fail to wax lyrical on the tranquillity and beauty of Villa Cimbrone in Ravello followed by a relaxing drink in the pretty garden of the Grand Hotel De La Ville. Torna a Surriento? Si.

We are all very flattered by your kind remarks and pleased that you appreciated our Restaurant, fully enjoying our specialties from breakfast to dinner, and would like to thank you for that.

As you mentioned, one of our special aspects is our position, a quite walk to the centre but without renouncing at the amazing view of the Bay of Naples.

We have extended your remarks to our staff members and they all send their warmest regards
We are waiting for you again here at De Le Ville, ready to make you enjoy our chef’s specialities.

The staff were very attentive and friendly, the hotel was clean and very comfortable. There are 2 swimming pools , the top floor overlooks the sea and mountains, spectacular view. The other pool is tucked behind the garden. The garden area was lovely and would imagine it to be cool during the hot summer. My only complaint is that we checked in as 2 couples, our friends were given a very large comfortable " standard room" our room was much smaller but we did have a small view of the sea. The breakfast was a highlight, very attentive staff and a beautiful array of food. The coffee was hot and they had hot milk to accompany it!! Eggs made to order and lots of fresh options!! Best breakfast we have had on our 5 week vacation in Europe . The hotel is a nice walk to the town probably about 10 minutes. Parking a bit pricey at 16 EU.

We stayed here in July with my husband, our two children and my mum and dad. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. The hotel is situated in an ideal position, close enough for our children to walk into the centre regularly. The rooms were lovely and they accommodated our children in the room right next door which was very appreciated. We could not fault the food as every night there were lots of things we all liked/or wanted to try for the first time. The breakfast food gave you plenty of options depending on what you were in the mood for.
The staff were all very friendly especially the waiting staff who really made you feel welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. Before we went I was worried that the kids would not like it and the food but they fitted in well and were welcomed and loved the choice of food.
We tended to use the lower pool as the pool on the roof is really suited for people who fancy a little dip. The lower pool was well used and no issues with children playing around in the water. Even better the fact that you can sip away on a cool drink whilst sitting by the pool.
