We were looking forward to out trip to The Amalfi Coast and we're not disappointed in any respect......albeit that the hire car was " an experience" in itself !
The Grand Hotel could not have been a better base, just a few minutes walk from the main square and the plethora of really good eating places? Our room was a good size double and was clean and well appointed. The little balcony also gave to opportunity to admire the views. The rest of the hotel was also clearly well looked after. I had noted in other reviews that there were suggestions that the hotel had seen better days.....I completely disagree, it was fresh, light and airy whilst still being traditional.....nothing wrong with that. I would say that perhaps the dinner menu is a little too traditional though ... but it is good to feel that the restaurant staff take pride in what they do. The views of the bay and Vesuvius from the swimming pool deck were fabulous.
The staff were friendly and very competent and the valet parking worked like a treat.
The subject of parking raises the whole concept of driving in Italy....more specifically driving in Naples/The Amalfi region. These guys take Italian driving to a whole new level ! I can only assume that the curators of Super Mario Cart came up with the idea following a drive from Sorrento to Positano ! Suicidal scooter riders ( one girl came around a hairpin bend on the road side of the road....whilst doing up her helmet !), people parking cars and buses anywhere in order to get a look at the views, car doors being opened randomly as you drive past...with you having only just allowed room to scrape past in the first place ....because the guy with the scooter tricycle thing appears to be heading straight for you. Then throw into the mix the Granny who decides to lurch across the road......10 metres before the zebra crossing ! All that was missing was a Gorilla on a go-cart ! All of this probably explains why our hire car a (PINK Renualt Twingo) looked like it had been hired by Nellie the Elephant previously . Rather like a survivor of some demolition derby.
Finally, on the topic of driving. Getting from the airport to Sorrento was a doddle. Finding the Airport from the A3 coming back was a nightmare ! If you miss the tiny sign you are absolutely stuffed......and for some reason car hire firms don't seem to have maps any more. Watch out .
Do go to the region and do go to this hotel . Get a taxi to and from the airport and hire a scooter to get around.....if you can't beat em.
