“Very Disappointing”
Reviewed 17 September 2009

Cant understand the reviews that this hotel gets on here, was quite excited as a result of reading them, sadly it was mostly a let down. We stayed in 3 hotels as part of our honeymoon, Rome, here in Sorrento and also Ischia. I emailed them all in advance to say we were on our honeymoon and yet this was the only hotel who made no acknowledgement of the fact. The others offered a room upgrade a free bottle of proseco (sometimes both) and a little card congratulating and welcoming us. We arrived at the The Grand Hotel De Ville Sorrento, to be met by Marianna the receptionist who never smiles. We told here we were on our honeymoon and she barely grunted at us, she stayed this way all week.
This hotel is on the package circuit with Thomas Cook, First Choice and Falcon etc and it is totally geared towards the herd them in, feed them and herd them out again on a weekly / fortnighly basis and probably serves this function well howver for a special occassion such as a honeymoon it is simply not special enough. I know tyhat you get what you pay for and that Hotels in Sorrento are not cheap, however i dearly wish i had spent more and went for something better. I even think that for the money we did spoend we could have done better. On the plus side, the location is very close to town and the waiting staff in the restaurant are extremely good and very friendly (as many on here have suggested) however this doesnt make up for the negatives of which there are too many. The hotel is extremely noisy - all floors are tiled and coachloads of package holidayers would either depart or arrive ar 8.00am and 9.00am - cue the sound of cleaners and beds being moved and general noise that it is impossible to sleep through. The hotel is on a side street yet because of the one way traffic system it is a very busy street. Once the scooter and mopeds and beeping horns finish at around 1am you can look forward to the bin lorries and service vehicles at 7am, if you do manage to get back over to sleep, dont worry, the madi will soon finish that off at around 9am. The food is OK but considering the fuss they make at dinner time, you have to dress up for the dining rooma nd the Enzo and his team of waiting staff, being very efficient run around like they are serving michelin star food, its not. a lot of it is frozen food, powdered soup and processed fayre. Its a bit of flattery to deceive i fear. The dining room itself is quite nicely decorated which makes you feel quite deflated when the food comes out, what with all the effort you have made to dress up and the staff have made to be very efficient.
The cost of drink is extortionate !!!!!
2 orange juices by the pool will cost €12 a coke is €5 there is no price list to tell you this, but you get a nice surprice when you check out, so beware !!!! - bring you own bottle of water and avoid the poolside drinks.
If you have booked this holiday as part of a package tour you will probably have a nice time as the waiting staff will make a fuss over you and hence you will feel special. I imagine the sheer number of package holidaymakers that come through here year on year is why it is so high on tripadvisors list. However for the money, I felt very let down.
On balance, i would say, Avoid !!!!

I could and often do ramble on when given the opportunity but this Hotel was such a disappointment that I can't bring myself to roll on and on.

We satyed here a few years ago and it was good but this time not so.

In summary, the room itself was nice but the cleaning began early in the morning and the dragging and scraping of furniture above was a real nightmare.

Whilst the service was good, the standard of the food in the restaurant was lousy. We booked half board and tried it twice but couldn't bring ourselves to go again, it was so bad. The dining room was too bright and there was no atmosphere (unless you go in for 'canteen style' dining), we had to queue up for dinner which I really object to. The food was incredibly salty.

The cost of drinks was just outrageous. Some friends bar bills were in the region of £700 for a week and they didn't go mad. We questioned our bill at the end of the week and found that we had been charged for drinks we didn't have.

How this place can acrue the ratings it has is beyond me.

Some friends went a few weeks after us and their feedback is the same.

I'd go elsewhere. In fact, avoid Sorrento....its become very, very expensive.

We thouroghly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel De La Ville, The service is excellent and front desk staff Vincenzo and Enrico so accomdating and helpful. The rooms are immaculate, well appointed - beds and pillows are a little stiff. Huge bonus - with it's sister hotel (Hotel Royal) moments away so you can use their gorgeous pier on the sea. Breakfast is wonderful in the courtyard. Would defintely come bacl on our next trip to Sorrento!

We arrived after dinner had finished however the hotel had arranged a meal for us which was great as we were hungry & tired. Our bedroom was very nice, clean and had adequate room for the 3 of us. It was cleaned very well every day by friendly staff. The hotel has two pools one on the rooftop which is more suited to couples as the pool is smaller & very hot due to the sunshine so if you like to move from the sun at times and have more of a splash in the pool the one in the garden on the ground floor is better for you. There was always an adequate amount of sun beds & deckchairs too. We were booked as 1/2 board which was great as the food at the hotel was very good the portions were very good too. The menu varied daily & was displayed outside the restaurant every morning much to my sons delight as he could choose what he was going to have for dinner as soon as breakfast had finished... The Head Waiter Enzo & his staff are very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was super there was a wide range of food and you could eat as much as you wanted to. Drinks were expensive at the hotel however there were plenty of places to have a drink around the Hotel. All in all a very good hotel we would stay there again if we go back to Sorrento in the future.

I would recommend this hotel and Sorrento for a great holiday. The hotel is old fashioned but in a good way: the staff were friendly and very efficient and the food varied from good to excellent. Our room overlooked the swimming pool and wasn't particularly large (the result of a late booking I think) but was very clean, well appointed and serviced every day. The drinks are expensive but so what - you're on holiday! If you want a cheaper drink, it's just a short stroll into the town which is usually busy yet always relaxed. Take a ferry from the small port to Amalfi for an enjoyable day - there are some fantastic coastal views from the boat. A return train ticket to Pompeii is a must - the station is only 10 mins walk from the hotel. If you want a swim in the sea, you can use the bathing platforms at their sister hotel the Royal-only 5 mins walk away and stunning views. Recommended.

We booked this hotel based on the excellent reviews it had recieved on Trip Advisor. It was only after booking the hotel that I looked at some of the other less complimentary reviews, which put doubt in my mind over the quality of the hotel.

When had a fairly reasonable welcome when we got to the hotel, and we're genuinely quite pleased when we were shown our room. We payed a suppliment to have a side sea view; I think this was probably worth it as it was a better view than I anticpated.

The room was clean and comfortable. The chambermaid did a great job and even noticed that we had put on an additional blanket over the top (the air conditionaing was very efficient despite out turning it down), and from then on always made out bed up with an additional better blanket - simple, but a nice touch!

The communual areas like the foyer, lifts and bar needed by be cleaned more often. The lifts would often be a little on the scruffy side from people going up to the roof terrace everyday. Also, the plastic flowers in my book are a big NO NO - they're just tacky and a resented having them on my dinner table as well!

The roof terrace with pool was nice witha fabulous view. The bar was very pleasant as well, but be careful, drinks aren't cheap, but I guess you should expect that with any hotel.
We didn't really use the bigger pool which was in a courtward and mostly shaded, but seemed good for families with kids.

The dining experience was probably my biggestlet down. The menus were a variation on the same theme, albeit it was different every night. The food is what you'd expect in a mediocre Italian restuarant in the UK. Being in Italy and having expeienced eating in Italian restaurants, I expceted at least all fresh producea and well excuted food. Unfortunately, it wasn't always. Also, the wine was about 20 - 25 Euros for a ecent bottle. The Maitre D' was very friendly, as were most of the other dining staff, but maybe a little insincere? The breakfast was the best meal of the day - but you just can't get decent corn flakes!

Finally, the de la Ville's sister hotel, the Royal, which grants use of its private beach is a much better hotel, from the lack of fake flowers, cleaner communal areas to the friendlier staff. If we ever go back to Sorrento, I'd stay in the Royal Hotel, even if it is a bit pricier.
