Spent a really enjoyable fortnight at the Miramare in July. Really unusual building that was originally a private residence. The staff were exceptionally friendly, especially Gabriella on the reception, giving a great service and gave us many tips and advice about the local area. The pool area offers breath taking views of Sorrento and the Bay of Naples. Rooms were cleaned daily and gave us ample room for our stay. Breakfast is continental style, but offered plenty of choice and was constantly topped up. Road outside is a bit dodgy, but no problem once you get around the bend and certainly should not prevent you staying at the hotel. The 'Verdemare' is a great traditional family run restaurant, less than 5 minutes walk further up the hill, which offers great food and service and well worth the visit. The Miramare is definitely a hotel we would all love to go back to

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony or patio to enjoy the views

This hotel was such a great find and I was so disappointed to only stay one night. The hotel is very beautiful and luxurious, the staff at reception were always friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious, clean and very comfortable, air conditioned however the only view we had was of the outside wall. We didn't mind though, the amazing pool overlooking the ocean was just a few feet away. The snack bar was a little disappointing, it's only open from 1-3pm and there is very limited items to order. My sister ordered a toasted sandwich which was terrible! The breakfast was much nicer and the view from outside while you are eating breakfast is hard to beat. Only a short walk to restaurants and shops, I really wish I had stayed longer. The rooftop sun lounges are a great addition, except we just couldn't find the moon at night! A very pleasant surprise and would love to go back

I stayed here for 3 nights on part of a trip along the Amalfi Coast. The hotel is small and is located on the main street on the way to Positano. The reception was always friendly... breakfast very pleasant with outdoor setting and a view... from the outdoor pool a breathtaking view of Sorrento... parking very convenient. Across the road is access to a private beach via Hotel La Tonnarella. Negative point - the room was extremely noisy. Car noise the entire night and in early morning there was noise from people chatting at reception and the cleaners cleaning the rooms and people running up and down the corridors. There seemed to be no noise isolation whatsoever.

Location - we actually spent two full days and nights in Positano because you couldn't compare it to Sorrento as a destination.

I would not stay here again purely because of the poor sleeping quality of the hotel.

Room Tip: Maybe a room on a high floor not facing the main road would be quieter

I last travelled to Sorrento area 25 years ago, so it was nice to go back with the family.
We booked the Hotel Miramare via Venere.com.

HOTEL:
Rather crazily we walked with our luggage from the railway station in the afternoon heat!
It's an interesting hotel with lots of staircases and levels, we were in room 101 just off reception.
The welcome was efficient and friendly, Gabriella offered us a room on a higher floor which I'd requested by email and had turned down at the time. However we stuck with our original 2 room apartment because our son's friend was with us, and we wanted some privacy!
Staff were always helpful. We requested extra pillows, and although they weren't sure if they had spare they brought them to the door later (in fact twice, by mistake). English was good, and if you tried strangled italian, they just talk back to you in English!
Breakfast was typical continental, but plenty of stuff, replenished often. The coffee in an urn was rather weak, but they would sell you proper coffee from the bar, which is in the breakfast room.
We cheekily made up cheese and ham rolls every day from the breakfast to reduce lunch costs, but figured we'd paid for it! You can eat inside or on the terrace, and some people took it back to their room (unless they were doing the lunch thing!)
The pool was good, and yes its not massive but there are only 24 rooms in the hotel, and people are often out and about. Lots of interesting outside spaces including loungers up on the roof, as well as the solarium (sun terrace). Wasn't a problem to me that they were reclining chairs by the pool rather than loungers.
As you'll be bored of hearing, yes the hotel's on the corner of a busy road, but this is only a deal breaker if you're infirm or perhaps deaf. You do need your wits about you..quite a sport!
The only time I felt unsafe was the blind corners walking uphill to the local restaurant.

ROOM:
Room 101 was not quite on the first floor, but shared a landing with another room. Two good rooms. Decor was not our taste, but typical Italian/French non-chain hotel. Bedroom was 2 singles made into a large, very firm double. We didn't have a balcony but did have a sea view from both rooms which we weren't expecting on the first floor (2nd floor in U.S!)
The main room had two single (fold out) beds. Just about OK for 2 18 year old "boys"!) Both rooms have big sliding door wardrobes, the main room (like every room apparently) has a more than adequate kitchenette, with hob, fridge sink and microwave. We cooked pasta etc every other night here for four. Tiny but sufficient. Fridge was a bit small when full of beer and wine which is probably its main use! There's a dining table as well in the main room. Both rooms had air-conditioning which was very efficient.
Our room was just above the road but we made a positive out of this by watching the hundreds of Vespas and Fiat 500s whizzing past as the sun set!
If I remember I'll post pictures of the floor plans which were in the corridors. There are some rooms which appear to look out on a wall, and there are different sizes and directions of balcony.
Two disappointing aspects..poor wifi, and not in just our room, and useless TV with no reception. You don't go on holiday to watch TV though! The wifi was surprising since there was a router outside the bedroom! Reception was fine in reception and by the pool so we didn't complain.
We ate out near the hotel a number of times. We enjoyed the restaurant Verdamare just 5 minutes up the hill where we often sat by the open "windows" watching the craziest junction you've ever seen! We also ate in town a couple of times. Plenty of places are just 4-8 euros for a pizza. We also ate directly opposite the Hotel at the Hotel Tonarralla which was rather more expensive.
SORRENTO & AREA:
We travelled from Naples airport by Curreri bus (€10pp) and back by train to Naples and Alibus (€7.50pp). We did get a taxi down to the station which was a ridiculous €24. we were advised with 4 suitcases and backpacks we would need the minibus, rather than the €12 car. I'm not so sure.

We had a great time exploring Sorrento, Capri, Pompeii, Vesuvius, and Herculaneum. Bear in mind Italy is rather behind the times, and you will need cash not card, in lots of places!! We used our own water bottles and filled up from the hotel or taps when out and about generally.(saving money again). Conad supermarket is 10 minutes down the hill.

Beaches are nearly all pay beaches in Sorrento. We went (just once) down the lift across the road at the Hotel Tonarella. €55 euro is rather a lot for a day on the beach. (Cost for 4 adults, 4 loungers and 2 brollies). There's a rocky (free) area about 20 minutes walk towards the Cap.

Overall we loved the hotel and the area!

Room Tip: Get a high room with a balcony if you can. Don't bring a car if you are doing the usual sights...

We'd been to Sorrento before, but not to this hotel. It was ideal for us (family of 6), with comfortable rooms, beautiful views and a swimming pool. Lots of terrace areas for sunbathing. There's no restaurant for evening meals, but breakfast is fine and there's a basic range of tasty sandwiches if you want to have lunch. Pleasant walk down to the town, especially in the evening - although watch the traffic as you come out the front door. There's a private beach right opposite, and access to the coast a short walk away. The staff were friendly and helpful. It's not 5 star luxury but you don't pay for that either. I would come back again.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view if you can.

Hotel:
Hotel is a 15 min walk into town on a gentle slope (down there, up back). State buses available, totally unreliable although cheap (E1.30 per adult per way. Need to buy tickets in advance from local shops) . We’re average fit (52 year old couple) but found it a nice exercise regime. Hotels further up the road start to offer shuttle services as getting too far to walk.

Room (104) we stayed in at Miramare was BIG, terrace was lovely – definitely book a sea view room as it’s stunning looking over Naples Bay and Vesuvius. A/C very effective, individually controlled. Very clean. Maid service to make beds, change towels etc every day.

Breakfast was bit dull (only ever saw croissant, yoghurt, toast, cheese, ham, tea & coffee) but suspect that’s same everywhere. No on-site restaurant and the bar (pool-side job) closes mid-afternoon. So you have to go out for lunch + dinner; either to pizza place 100 yards up road or that 15 min walk into town (where loads of choice).

A bit tired (mould in bathroom, shower dodgy, TV only 1 English channel (CNN) which kept losing signal) and pool is v small. Not far off standing room only when busy. Lots of families. Wi-Fi Internet totally rubbish.

Location:
Sorrento is lovely. Miramare is at the “Old Town” end which is slightly cheaper than the other more commercial end (Hilton etc), so pays your money makes your choice… Loads of alleyways with more restaurants than you’ll ever get through in a fortnight. They can be a bit hawkish (try to drag you in off the street as you pass).
Their driving is totally insane. Do not take a car. Sitting in road-side tavernas, I can say with absolute honesty there wasn’t a day where we didn’t witness a small accident (clipping of bumpers etc including 2 mopeds head-on).
Both Vesuvius + Herculaneum total must - you will remember these forever.

Tips:
For reasons I cannot now explain, decided to get ferry from Naples to Sorrento. Just don’t do it. Taxi from airport to ferry is Euro20 + E12 each (plus remember to buy tickets for luggage) + taxi from Sorrento port to hotel is E15. Whole transfer = 3 hours + E51. Hot & sweaty. Instead the hotel offer a meet & great by private taxi straight to hotel for E80 (we discovered afterwards….). Take it. Only 1 hour transfer.

Room Tip: Worth pushing for room with sea view. Room 104 has large balcony

The Hotel Residence Miramare was an incredible place to stay! Our rooms had an absolutely incredible view of Vesauvius and the Mediterranean Sea. We couldn't have been more pleased with everything about this hotel. The rooms were attractive and comfortable. The hotel staff couldn't have been any nicer or more accommodating. Our only problem was having to leave this beautiful place with the most gorgeous view we have ever seen!

Room Tip: Our rooms opened directly outside to an incredible view, I would definitely ask for one of these ro...
