There is so much to stay about this hotel... Location: great! Very central but up a quiet corner of sorrento so you're not bothered by traffic and noise. It also sits on the best location for seeing the sunset too. All the staff are so friendly and helpful and speak excellent English. Our room was perfect; I'd recommend a sea view... You'll understand why! Wifi is free throughout the hotel, even poolside. Although doesn't work so well at peak times during the evening. Our room was spotlessly clean and was maintained at that level throughout the holiday. Large choice for buffet breakfast including a range of gluten and wheat free items. The pool was excellent with great loungers that were so comfy. The hotel is traditional without being old fashioned. You could imagine staying there in the 50s or 60s and it looking pretty much the same but in a good way!! Nostalgic. Air con was in the room and an electronic shutter for the balcony to block out all light from the room for a good night sleep. Cannot recommend this hotel enough and will always think so highly of our time in sorrento because of this hotel. I cannot recommend it enough and I'd love to go back.

We have just returned from one week at the Hotel Continental in Sorrento. This hotel is in a fantastic location as it is located at the end of a garden square just off the old but busy area of Sorrento. it is so close to a fabulous terrace overlooking the bay and Vesuvius and a minutes walk from the many eating places and shops and yet it is very quiet as there is little traffic in this part of town.
The hotel has a kind of 1950's glamour in it's decor and service and the staff are incredibly smart ,friendly, helpful and really make you feel like the only guests in the hotel.Bedrooms are decorated in beautiful mediterranean colours and are cleaned to a very high standard each day. The breakfast room is lovely and so is the breakfast buffet, huge and always a little different each day. We did not try the evening dining experience but I am sure it will be excellent. The pool area is bright and immaculately maintained and yet still has quite an old world feel..poolside service and lunches are fantastic and there are always fresh golden towels to match the yellow sun loungers. My favourite place was the swing seat in the little lime grove garden..just perfect.(there is some noise from a school refurb next door but this is minimal, ends about 3pm and never at weekends)
The famous happy hour when the equally famous cocktails are served along with free appetisers on the front terrace is always a lovely ending to the day and guests do chat which creates a super atmosphere before the evening begins. i would also recommend having coffee and liqueurs back at the hotel bar after an evening out as it is a lovely place to unwind after the hustle and bustle of Sorrento at night time.
The staff really make this hotel and many of them have worked there for many years..I feel this is a good sign of a happy workplace. Sorrento itself is touristy but it is a beautiful location and a great base for the area/trips/sights. I also felt very safe there and quite often returned alone to the hotel whilst my travelling companions tried the 'younger' bars.
I for one will almost certainly be visiting this hotel again.
ps; the beds are a bit hard but that said i slept really well! Beach area can be pricey for the day but you can come and go if you keep your receipt and again the area is very well maintained.

Room Tip: ask for a sea view or partial sea view although rooms at the back of the hotel will get the morning...

Echoing other reviews really. The location is perfect so close to town and port but just out of the noise. Views are some of the best in sorrento. the lift down to the pier/beach is handy. Expensive to hire sun beds etc there though. You can walk down the hill from the hotel to the fishing village which is gorgeous and has a free public beach. (Don't eat at the De Liva sisters cafe - despite Jamie's recommendation!!!!)
Some rooms at the hotel are internal facing which are not great but any external room is fine.
The breakfast was excellent and the service was real old style Italian - charming. Happy hour at 7pm on the front balcony was a delight made even better by Giovanni and his team. Hats off to Carlo and Antonio and Ciro as well. I have stayed at a lot of hotels all over the world but never have I been so impressed with the staff. Fantastic team.
Some beds a bit uncomfortable. We seemed to have a hard side and a soft side. Apparently the beds in Italy are singles zipped together. I don,t know. To be honest we were so captured by the place that the hotel was just a bonus.

Room Tip: Any external room better. View rooms are great. Higher rooms better.

Just returned from the Continental and a great holiday in Sorrento. This was the second time that we have stayed in the hotel and it was even better. We were fortunate to get room 317 which had a partial sea view looking out towards Capri. We watched the sun set every night before we went out. The room was a good size and had everything we needed. It was immaculately clean and every night the bed covers were turned down and we left a note of the weather forecast for the next day. We were also left a small bar of chocolate which was a nice touch.

The hotel is in a great location and only a short walk from the Main Street. As most of the reviews have said, the staff are great and very helpful. The hotel decor is very traditional which adds to the experience. The pool are is very nice and was never overcrowded. Although we were only B&B it let us eat out every evening. There are so many great restaurants to eat in it is difficult which ones to recommend.

They are building a new school next to the hotel so there is some disruption but it did not affect our stay in any way.

The Festival of Santa Anna was on when we were there which added to the holiday. The closing firework display was out of this world which we watched for our balcony.

Sorrento is a hub for visiting other places and as the previous review mentions it is easy to arrange things yourself. We went to Pompeii on the train for a second time. It only cost 4 euros for a return but you do need to watch out for pick pockets. Pompeii only costs 11 euros to get in and a further 5 euros if you want the information aides. We also went on a mini cruise to Amalfi and visited the Santa Andrea Cathedral. It was a fantastic day out.

Great hotel and will be back.

Our view from the small balcony in room 207 was worth the trip. We could hear piano music playing (from the restaurant next door) every evening, see the sunrises over the Gulf of Naples every morning, and sit up there to drink vino & people watch on the piazza.
Breakfast was outstanding, healthy, and the waiters were true perfectionists and funny.
Although the wifi/internet was slow or hard to connect to, it was available in room and in the lobby.
Our room was decorated with the lemons and the lemons color, perfect for this location in the world. The pool is very large, very clean, and we used it 3-4 times, even though it doesn't have a sea view. It was so refreshing to get it after a day of sight seeing! We love this Hotel and adore Sorrento!

Room Tip: Room 207 has a magnificent view of the Gulf of Naples, the Mountains, and the Piazza below.

Grand Hotel Continental is its official title and its name does not disappoint! We had emailed hotel before our arrival as we were celebrating our 41st Wedding Anniversary and were rewarded with room 109 with a beautiful side sea view. Friends had paid a lotta, lotta money for a full sea view and there was very little difference to what we got! As many have remarked, the first thing about the hotel is its staff. Have never exchanged so many "Buon Giorno"s as we did in the Continental. Front desk, Breakfast Room Staff, Cleaning Staff were all so friendly! Must thank in particular Antonio and Franco in the breakfast room who were stars! They have obviously worked with each other for a long time and their English and sense of humour were fantastic! A Morecombe and Wise combination to people of our generation! Could have put wee Franco in my suitcase when I came home!!!!

Position of hotel could not be better. Balcony outside to see the sunset, lift to Marina Piccola a minute away and Foreigners Club at the next corner. Five minutes from Piazza Tasso and the Corso. My advice, if your hotel mentions shuttle buses, forget it! Make sure you go to a hotel within easy walking distance of PT and the Corso.

So easy to get about without using expensive Tour Operators' Trips. We went to Positano by ferry - what a beautiful resort! Too hilly for me to stay in but a joy to visit. Capri again by ferry. Went straight up to Ana Capri in the bus and did the chairlift. Wonderful. Don't let anyone tell you it is scary! SO peaceful and you are never any more than 30 metres off the ground. You can wave to people who have houses below.Went to Amalfi by air conditioned coach which leaves from the station. Was an experience! Took 40 minutes to do last 5 kms as there were cars parked all along the coastal road. Bus driver on and off the bus about 20 times organising cars so he could get through! Got a round of applause from passengers when he eventually did! Would not drive there for a fortune!!! Went to Pompeii by train - got serenaded on the train before leaving Sorrento station! Paid 12 euros each for guide for 2 hours. well worth it. This was over and above entrance .

Only criticism I would make -and this is probably a personal thing- could only get B n B in the Continental. Would much have preferred HB as I find it more enjoyable to eat a wee bit from every course rather than choose a main course in a restaurant every night that I knew I would never finish.

Room Tip: Would never pay the extra for a full sea view with a travel company. £500 + extra for a fortnight...
