“Good Hotel - one of the best locations in Sorrento”
Reviewed 20 September 2009

I have just returned from visiting the Hotel Continental (11th - 18th September 2009).
This hotel is located in a quiet location in front of a small grassed square mainly frequented by visitors, locals, dog walkers and in the evening teenagers (not the threatening variety). It is some 50 yards from the cliff edge with excellent views accross the Bay of Naples. The main centre of Sorrento is about 10 minutes gentle stroll from the hotel. It is staff that make a hotel and this hotel seems to have excellent ones.
I found reception, cleaning and waiting staff friendly and approachable.
My wife and I stopped on a half board basis and although the fruit juice seems to be a little weak with our breakfast there was plenty to eat although not fancy.
The evening meals were excellent although the service could be a little slow on occaisions, I am told that the hotel have had to lay off some four waiters and chefs when things were a little slow at the hotel eralier in the season.
The rooms were clean and tidy and the beds were comfortable. Our room (213) overlooked the school next door to the hotel but appart from builders starting at 0730 in the morning it was not a problem. The building next door to the school had a guard dog at the weekend which was a bit noisy.
This hotel in my view is in a ideal location, just far enough from the town centre to be quiet but easy to get to when you want to stroll amongst the shops of which there are plenty and a lovely walk to the Marina Grande to eat and watch the local fishermen going about their trade. I shall return to the hotel.

My wife and I booked this hotel to see the Vesuvius Volcano, Pompeii and to relax.
When we arrived to the hotel there was first no parking garage available because it was ful. But after they checked our reservation there was somehow space. When I drove in the garage, I realized why I had too reserved. There was only space for about 8 cars and had to stand against each other. When you need your car there had to be cars moved from the garage outside to pass through your car. They did the driving for the customers so you have too left your keys at the reception.
We had expected more descent parking solution, although it could be stored outside on a parking.

The reception staff was extremely kind and helpful and takes care of your luggage in no time.
Also they know exactly who you are and let you feel welcome.

The standard room first look great but looking outside gave us a view of a building of the neighbors, there was a balcony but it didn’t attract us to sit there.
The television is a little bit poor for a 4 star hotel as this one, a small portable tv that didn’t receive the channels from the folder. But who wants to watch tv with 36 degrees.
The bathroom was classic even as the whole room does look like, lots’ of gold and marble, not our tastes but certainly there are many people who love this. The maids cleaned the room very well and they even make your bed ready for the night, a towel is spread over the ground so you don’t get cold feet and there were chocolates by the bed.
That was very nice but finally we lay in bed we feel the bed was not what we expected of such a 4 star hotel. The beds gave us the feeling as if we sleep in a hammock and didn’t sleep very comfortably for three nights. We did a lot of hotels in the past 2 weeks but this were the worst beds we had.
Also, there were no coffee and tea facilities in the room.

The restaurant of the hotel didn’t attract us to eat there so we went out to the city Sorrento to have our meals there.
Sorrento is crazy busy in August and actually overfull and that wasn’t relaxing anymore. There were not enough restaurants for all the customers and streets were crowded with people, traffic and gave you the smell as if you stand behind a running bus.
But that’s something the hotel hasn’t got anything to do with.

The breakfast in the restaurant room was good, there was tea and coffee brought to the table.
There was plenty of choice for everybody and even they had boiled eggs that are warm when you eat them, something I didn’t have before in Italy.
One thing of the breakfast was a little bit disappointing, the orange juice was more water as juice and tasted horrible, not what you expect if you look how good the rest of the breakfast is. Overall we find the breakfast very good as we had much worse in Italy.

We didn’t use the beach as it was charged with 3 euro’s at your hotel bill but of that the beach was not of the hotel it self. Once you entered the beach you have to hire a sun bed which also cost you money. The result is your lie on wooden planks as sardines between others. Somehow it didn’t look nice and we thanked for the beach.
The swimming pool was not that big and there were all walls around, the place to lie was limited and a sun bed cost another 3 euros.

The sightseeing as Vesuvius and Pompeii is beautiful but this hotel didn’t blow us away. We had our room with a special prize but wouldn’t have it for the original price.
The hotel looks a little overpriced because it stands in Sorrento and has sort of beach.
We had much better hotels in Italy that didn’t cost that much and had better rooms and beds.

Although we spend a good time in Sorrento as we liked the sightseeing but didn’t find Sorrento and the hotel worth visiting. We can advise this hotel to people who like overcrowded places as Sorrento with overrated prices and less choice.

Just had two wonderful weeks staying in the Continental with my family. Unlike so many of the hotels in Sorrento, the Continental is well away from busy traffic, set in a small piazza overlooking the Bay of Naples. The decor is beautiful, marble abounds, and all public rooms very well presented. We had two rooms with sea views, again very well presented, and spotlessy clean. Staff friendliness is exceptional, nothing appears too much trouble, and the dining staff are a delight, led by the informative Antonio who revels in customer care. Food quality also exceptional, good continental breakfast choice and wide variety of an a la carte menu for dinner, we hardly ate away from the hotel for fear of missing something special. The pool is a decent size, with ample loungers for everyone, and a poolside bar available throughout the day with waiter service. Being so close to Sorrento centre is ideal, less than a minute away to explore the charming narrow streets adorned with shops and restaurants. The hotel does have a mini-gym, although much of the equipment was broken, something the hotel should address to appease the fitness afficionados, and although the bar is well appointed, does not get very busy due to the proximity of the local wine bars and restaurants. This is a fine hotel, a very definite 4 star rating, and ranks amomg the best I have encountered. If anyone planned to stay for a while, I would recommend paying the extra for a sea view; being able to look out across the bay to Vesuvius every day is an unforgettable experience.

We were recommended to this hotel by a friend who had stayed there many times. We were not disappointed! The location is central to everything in Sorrento, the room was well appointed and very clean, with a wonderful view from the balcony, the staff were delightful, going out of their way to be helpful. The food was good, in particular the amazing choice of starters, mostly Italian-style, which were as substantial as a main course. Breakfast was better than we expected - having read some less than favourable reviews. Antonio is the perfect restaurant manager, and his repartee with long serving waiter, Franco will keep you amused! There are plenty of free deckchairs around the pool so paying for a sunbed wasn't necessary. We used the lift to get up to the hotel from the beach and, contrary to some reports, we weren't charged. The only downside of the hotel in our opinion is that they don't accept credit cards. This was a great shame, as we would have spent some evenings in the bar, and had meals by the pool, if we could have paid our final bill by credit card (our credit card company was offering double loyalty points for spending abroad during August but not for drawing cash!)

On the advice of a friend who had lived in Italy and the strong reviews on Tripadvisor, we booked four nights at the Continental Hotel. We were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived and were greeted by the front desk staff we knew we had made the right choice. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms spotlessly clean and comfortable. The pool is very big with chairs all around. It is well situated, quiet, away from the hustle and bustle but only a 5-10 minute walk to the main piazza and maybe 10-15 minutes from the train station. Breakfast was great with choices ranging from antipasto, scrambled eggs, cereals, yogurt, baked goods, and fruit. The breakfast staff were impeccably dressed with white suits and bow ties. Service was great as we were seated and brought coffee almost instantly. We were always greeted with several "Buon Giornos" from the wait staff who were always cheerful and professional. What a great way to start the day! I can't say enough about the front desk staff. True professionals, they not only did a fantastic job but did so while making us feel like more than just hotel guests. What a nice feeling when you come down the following day after checking in and someone greets you by name. When I asked about a restaurant they didn't hesitate to call and make the arrangements. The restaurant that we went to had a shuttle that picked us up and brought us back. The following morning I realized that I had forgotten my camera on the floor of the car. Not only did the front desk call for me to find about the camera, but when they found out that the restaurant could not get it back immediately and that we wanted it because we were going to Capri, they sent someone from the hotel to pick it up for us. All while acting not the least bit put out. A couple of other little personal touches were the bedside chocolates and the foot towels on the floor beside the bed at night. Any hotel can be clean or pretty, or have comfortable beds. What makes Continental Hotel rise above the others is that it has all those things and a tremendous staff too.

We picked this hotel for its location and reasonable price for Sorrento and were not disappointed. The welcome was very friendly when we arrived at the hotel and we were shown up to our room and how to work everything which was a nice touch. The room was well equipped with reasonable decor and was very quiet. The view was of the roof top but we could just see the sea in the distance.

The only complaint with the room was the air conditioning was not very powerful and it never seemed to get much below about 23c.

The pool area was good although probably could do with a few more loungers. The pool was just the right temperature and a decent size for swimming. Towels were provided. We ate lunch by the pool one day and that was reasonably priced compared with local restaurants. We also took the lift down to the beach which was also very handy to walk to the port without having to go up and down a hill! There is a charge of 3E to enter the beach club but the lift is free.

The hotel is well situated on a quiet square being only a few minutes walk from Marina Grande, Marina Piccolo and Tasso square and there were plenty of restaurants close by.

The only other complaint was breakfast. The juice was terrible and tasted like watery squash despite the fact we were sitting looking a orange trees! The fruit selection was limited and was often tinned but the cappuchino was excellent.

Overall I was very impressed with the hotel and would definately stay again when I return to Sorrento.

My husband and I have just returned from this Hotel and it was a lovely hotel, it is in a perfect location within walking distance of the main Piazzo Tasso and overlooks the Bay of Naples. The staff are so friendly it is like being part of a family with them and the quality and variety of the food is exceptional. We ate in the Hotel every evening and never had a problem with the food. In fact they could not do enough for you even giving you a bit of each of the puddings when you couldn't decide which one to have. The decor could be classed as dated however it could be just Classic Italian Style but the rooms are spacious and well equipped however the hairdryer in the bathroom is not the most efficient and would just recommend you stand on the balcony in the summer and let your hair dry naturally! Would definately recommend a sea view room well worth paying the extra. Around the pool there are only a few sunbeds however plenty of deckchairs and the pool is a lovely size for the size of the hotel.
The beach is accessible via the hotel lift which is a benefit as it is quite a hike down the cliff but the views are second to none. Very romantic!
