Michelangelo Hotel
Ranked #69 of 101 Hotels in Sorrento
Reviewed 2 August 2009

We travelled to Sorrento in July this year and decided to stay at the Michelangelo Hotel after checking the reviews on Tripadvisor. The hotel is ideally situated and close to the centre of the resort. Sorrento itself is very flat and the only hills are down to the beaches. For 1 euro you can catch a bus!

The hotel is very clean and the staff are friendly. The food in the restaurant is plentiful, the starters were as big as the main course on occasions. We had a bottle of the house wine with most meals and it war reasonably priced. The deserts were delicious.
Our hotel room overlooked the swimming pool, it was a good size and had a fridge. At night the corridors outside our room were very quiet.

We went on two trips, the first was to Vesuvius and Pompeii, we decided to use the train to get to get there, It was very cheap and far better value than what was being offered by our tour rep. Our next trip was to catch the bus to Amalfi, the trip takes in some stunning scenery and its definitely worth doing.

Sorrento is a lovely place with terrific views, one of the best view points was at the foreigners bar where you can sit with a glass of chilled wine overlooking Naples and Vesuvius, its stunning!!

The only disapointment was the price of drinks, beer was 5 euros although meal prices are similar to what we pay in the UK.

We enjoyed Sorrento and would travel there again!!

This is a full review of what I experienced at the hotel and surrounding areas. Please accept my apologies for any typos I am typing quite fast. Grazie!

This Hotel is unpretentious and really is a hidden gem. Close to the town but not loud at night. Close to Buses and trains, but again not loud. The waiters are excellent, well presented with an excellent service with a smile. Perfect English...though if you try a little Itlalian with them they welcome it and converse back in English and Italian!

There is a Casino nearby (I spotted a sign about 5 min walk from hotel) though it is underground and no noise can be heard at all.

There is a local park about 10 mins walk which have open air concerts - not bands.

On the first night we arrrived we got to the hotel at 10:30pm, as the restaurant was closed we got to our room thinking what we were going to do for food (although there is plenty open within a 2min stroll). But when we got to our room we each had a plate of cold meats and veggie options on our plate and with an egg omelelte. Proper knifves and forks too with proper napkins....service or what?

The rooms have a mini bar, probably double the price of buying outside for each item but if you want to use it once on the first or last night it is ideal, cokes, sprite, fanta, beer, wine, whiskey, vodka.

Mosquitos - They do appear at night and I must let you know that I attract mosquitos like blood to a shark (or to a mosquito)...I had no problems here though - amazing, I was lucky as at the pool I spotted many people with bites. Tips I think work..don't use too much deodoarant, enter the room with the lights off and then turn on the lights when the door is closed, we kept our patio doors open with the lights off and I was fine ( I am even amazed as I get bitten in the UK)!.

All rooms have balconies, our one was on the gorund floor (room 318) and it was amazing to sit outside for 10 mins in the morning or evening just to have a drink. You can smoke ashtrays are provided, the rooms however don't smell of smoke - bonus for smokers and non smokers.

TV - about 15 channels, UK bbc news, also CNN and a SKY Cinema Channel in english. Tv for French Monde and tv for Italians...a good mix...but beleive me you don't want to stay in the room when you have the following:

Pool, Nice cool never packed, free sun loungers, free towels, showers (open and private), toilets and free shampoo packets.

It is not permitted to reserve you sun lounger so no towels in the early morning to take your lounger as it will be taken off, regular patrols from the staff ensure fairness.

The room has a nice shower/bath. 2 lifts in the hotel are great.

A 15 minute walk takes you to a church where mass is held in English.

Food is great cold meats/cheese/cereal for breakfast, dinner is ala carte.

Location: 5 min walk to station, 40 mins from station to pompei (euros 6.40 return for 2 people) Pompei 11 euros entry per person.

You can get to Mount vesuvious from Pompei station for euro 8.90 return.

From the hotel you can get to the beach (which is black sandy grey but lovely)...best to hire a sun lunger for the day at peters beach or lionels for around 11 euros per person but worth it as the water is so fresh clear and nice to swim in.

Capri - get to Capri on the Paul and Shark ferry ranging from euros 15 to 27 per person depending on the time of travel.

A man will come up to you with an american accent and offer you a tour of the Capri for euro 20 pp. We did it for 10 euros PP. the funiculare is £2.80 return from the port to the middle of Capri and another 2.80 euros to Ana Capri. If you want to go further you can go on the cable car (single seater) for euros 8 PP.

Explore the mid level on Capri and look at the restaurants with the stars, M Carey, U Thurman.....nice place, although I didnt explore the beach on the island.

Takes 25 mins max from port piccola to Capri, but the tickets on the main square.

There is so much more to say about sorrento, but to get to the sea you must be pretty fit as there is a bit of walking involved , although a free beach bus is available, but I think iti is a must walk to see the sites. Car moped and boat hirte available.

GREEN CROSS CODE WARNING: BE CAREFUL ON THE ZEBRA CROSSINGS AND CROSSING THE ROAD! - The traffic is constant and stop signs do not bother people here...so I would say look both ways and again and then cross if clear!

Enjoy it, it's an amazing location!

Hotel is in central position very close to the bus and train terminus that provides access to Naples and the Amalfi coast. - this would be the main reason for recommending it. Very easy to walk into the center of Sorrento town or down to the harbour.

The hotel is clean with helpful staff. Rooms are small but sound insulation is poor with noise of water from upper floors and telephone rings or knocks on the door travel though partitioning. Food is canteen style quality- choice of several starters and mains but all pre prepared - nothing freshly cooked. Orange Juice comes from a machine and is sweetened artificial tasting stuff - you woundr if it ever saw an orange. Breakfast buffet adequate- selection of cold meat, cheese, tinned fruit etc.

Small pool on first floor terrace and rooftop loungers where one can catch a bit of a breeze in the afternoon

had checked reviews through trip advisor before booking, all in all reviews where pretty good. It is a nice hotel although is a bit generous to give it a four star, The staff where helpful and polite, we had booked halfboard, breakfast evening dinner. Breakfast as normal for european, no hot breakfast as per expected, evening dinner not that great, ate out quite a lot. Anyway had a good holiday, sorrento was beautiful. Checked out on day of departure. Before leaving the hotel management had tried to blame us for a burn mark on one of their bed covers, THIS WAS ON THE BEDDING WHEN WE ARRIVED!!!! I dont know if this is a scam of the hotel so please be aware if you are going, do make sure everything in the room is perfect. I found the two men at reception desk quite threatning to myself as a female and was so glad that my son came to deal with the situation, will never stay at this hotel again although will be back to Sorrento

Visited Sorrento (for a second time) in June 2008. Had previously stayed at a hotel which was a bus ride away so this time wanted something more central and (through First Choice) booked the Michelangelo Hotel mainly for that reason. We were not disappointed. The location is perfect, being about a five minute stroll from the centre (Piazzo Tasso). It is a lovely hotel, very clean and well looked after, with helpful, friendly staff, not least, of course, Guiseppi, who was an entertainment in himself and great company. Our room was fairly small, which seems to be the norm in Italy, but we had a balcony with a decent view and we enjoyed several swims in the hotel pool. True, not the largest of pools, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. We had the bed and breakfast option which we always seek out, preferring not to be tied to a hotel for our evening meal. We like to try the local restaurants and eat at a time to suit us. Sorrento has plenty of good restaurants and, thank goodness, we never spotted a burger bar. Piazzo Tasso is a lovely place to sit with a meal and a glass of wine and watch the world go by. We also loved the 'Foreigners' Club' including the duo who put on a good show most evenings. Someone mentioned their songs being a bit cheesy but, hey, who cares. Cheesy fits the bill on holiday!!!

We took a trip (again) to Capri. Very expensive but has its own charm. Ischia too is worth a visit, although expensive (the euro being what it is) to get there. Seemed a lot cheaper when we went in 2004. Ischia is beautiful with a mixture of Italian and Greek styles. We enjoyed most of the day at the spa there. We couldn't resist doing the Almafi trip again, organised through First Choice. All English commentary. Stunning views. Includes a boat trip at Amalfi itself with time to spend in the town, followed by a nice lunch in a stunning setting at Ravello with, again, time to spend in Ravello afterwards.

We intend going back to Sorrento next year and would love to return to the Michelangelo Hotel. However, we are disappointed to note from the current First Choice brochure that they no longer offer the bed and breakfast option.

NOTE FOR TRAVEL AGENTS SUCH AS FIRST CHOICE: More and more holidays are being offered as All Inclusive or Half Board. Please be aware this does not suit all travellers as many, like us, do not want to be tied to the same place every night for our meals. I realise that for some, the above options may appeal financially, but please give a bed and breakfast option too.

After a week in Sorrento we are sorry to leave! The hotel was brilliant, the staff couldnt do enough to help you, the waiters were lovely (look out for the "save-it-for-breakfast" waiter). Unlucky if you get a front room, we had on, barely slept all week with the noise from outside. The food was lovely, especially the dessert, but the breakfast did get a little repetitive. The swimming pool was small but to be fair, you dont need a large one in such a lovely place, there is so much to do. If you go with Thompson i cannot stress how beneficial it is to go on the welcome tour, you find great places and pick up some discount vouchers and freebies on the way!!
Id deffo stay at this hotel again, best in Sorrento!

We stayed a the Michelangelo as a last minute booking & therefore had to settle for the last available rooms, the room was very spacious & cleaned every day with fresh towels etc. the only downside was our view of the train line & station from our balcony.
We didn't let this spoil our stay though as the windows were double glazed & the room air conditioned so the windows stayed closed, plus we were out sightseeing all day.
all of the staff were very courteous & polite, they went out of their way if things were not to your liking.
While we were there they presented a birthday cake & bottle of bubbly to a lady who was 70 that day, we all thought he husband had set it up but apparently they noted her date of birth on her passport when she handed it in when she checked in & suprised her.
The hotel is located on the main street in Sorrento (Corsa Italia) so within walking distance of the Piazza Tasso.
I would definately return to this hotel but I will be asking for a front facing room next time!
