we have recently returned from a 10-day stay at the hotel admiral, half board and what a lovely holiday it was. the hotel itself was a bit like 'faulty towers' and dated, but the staff was very friendly and helpful and the hotel, rooms and pool area were clean. the bed was very comfortable, clean towels every day and clean bedding every other day. the views of the bay of naples and on to vesuvius from our balcony and terraces were second to none. the food was ok with waiter service which was nice, 2-3 times a week they had a buffet or gala evening usually when guests were leaving or new ones arriving. these dinners, usually outside on the terrace, were very nice and tasty with lots of choices. it would be nice if they would do food like that all the time. marina grande itself is a lovely, little , quaint fishing port where time has stood still, nice little restaurants right by the water with fresh pasta and seafood dishes, delfinos is one of the best ones. we also had a lovely meal at tony's beach bar and used their sunbeds every day (they serve a nice decent cup of tea btw amongst lots of other things). there is a bus going from marina grande into sorrento town every 20min and you can buy the tickets from the newsagent, again the lady in there is really nice and helpful. instead of the bus we walked most of the time up the steps into sorrento which took about 15min with lovely views and winding alleyways. piazza tasso is a buzzing place especially on a weekend again with lots of restaurants and icecream parlours and very reasonable too, also lots of little alleyways with shops. the 'foreigners club' is a short walk from piazza tasso and looking down onto marina piccolo where the bigger ferries leave from. they have live music every night and lovely food. the waiters are quick, friendly and attentive. the whole holiday has been a fantastic experience :):) capri, the amalfi coast, vesuvio and pompei an absolute must. i will definately return to sorrento and will stay at the hotel admiral again!!

Room Tip: i believe all the rooms have sea view, some with bigger balconies than others, the views are just ou...

This hotel we booked for one reason - to be right next to the sea. We looked at 4-5 star hotels in the hills of sorrento with large pools and free shuttle bus service to and from the center of sorrento but still opted for this 3 star purely for the location.

The Location - Its right on the Marina Grande, beautiful restaurants on your door step. It has numerous religous shrines all along the beach, not one bit touristy. At night its all lit up and looks like a picture from a book. Theres a bus that goes every 40 minutes from the shop right on the beach for 1 euro each that takes you up to sorrento. Very reliable and never packed and we went in July! You buy the tickets in the shop. You can walk to sorrento main square BUT in over 100 degree heat with no clouds or shade it is unbearable. And uphill. So you have to be quite fit and definatley wear a hat!

Hotel - The hotel is basic, a few lovley touches though. The rooms are spotless and bright. Couldnt fault the rooms in any way - me and my boyfriend are very fussy! this is our first 3 star experience and was not dissapointed. Our first night we had the top room with huge balcony, huge bedroom and bathroom but we wanted to move to a lower floor to have more of a cosy room and small balcony, the next day we had a look at the room below us and it was perfect.
Our balcony view was absolutley stunning, we woke up to bright sunshine glistening off the sea every morning - perfect. Maids were very pleasant, always greeted you with a smile.
The decking area which is the bar/restaurant for half board, is right on the sea, lovley to sit out and have a drink at night. We didnt go half board as theres so many cheap restaurants to choose from on the harbour and in sorrento, on average 6 euros for a huge pizza!
My parents stayed in the hotel grand president, in sorrento, we went there everyday to sit by their pool as we didnt like the chairs by ours. At the time of booking we were going to choose theirs as it was a 4 star and included half board for a small amount more and deck chairs...but were so glad we chose our hotel for the sea view and location. The admiral is having a refurb end of this year, we cant wait to go back and check it out.
The staff were lovley, well the older men were anyway. There was always a rather grumpy receptionist woman who made us laugh at her lack of smile or any personality. Her face was stone all the time much to our amusement. Always huffing!. But over all the staff were faultless.

Negative points -

No sun loungers. Huge con as those chairs are not comfy for more than half hour! but we knew that before we went to be fair, and the beach is litrally on your door step.
Breakfast was the biggest let down. The hot items were kept warm by a tea light under a big tray..so wasnt warm. We went down twice and that was all. We had read previous reviews and was looking foreward to our breakfast but sadly it did not match the commentary. There was bacon or sausage served alternativley each day, scrambled eggs, toast, cold meats, dougnuts etc, sounds appetizing but it really wasnt! we made up for it at lunch though in sorrento!
We only had drinks in the bar on the first night as we went into sorrento for the rest of the week. I had a vodka and orange which was disgusting, the orange was fizzy and you couldnt taste the vodka.
We watched the hotels Gala evening before we went out one night from our balcony, it looked superb, waiters in tuxedos, they let the guests sit outside by the sea with all the tables laid beautifully, bread on the tables, torch candles lit up all along the sea edge. I think they do it twice a week if your staying half board.

Overall fab hotel for a break, perfect location. But you got to have a sea view! you wont regret it!

The hotel was basic, but clean and friendly.
The views from the balconies were fantastic and this could easily be upgraded to 4* due to the seafront location and wonderful views.

We found the hotel was based where the locals lived and lots of Italian holidaymakers used the beach in the Marina Grande and surrounding restaurants. The decking area outside overlooked the sea, but the pool area was very small, more of a plunge pool. The food was good and lots of variety would recommend staying half board or you would have to pay 20 euros each for dinner. Would recommend booking balconies; however these hugely differ in size, which isn’t really fair, as our friend’s balconies was about 3 times bigger than ours, with full views. Overall would stay again and recommend as a good value hotel.

Thomson Amalfi Drive trip was fantastic and Pompeii and Herculaneum guided tour are a must see. The exclusive cruise trip to Capri trip though Thomson’s was awful, overpriced at 75 euros and they don’t tell you there’s no toilet on board or give you any info about getting round Capri, which was extremely difficult.

Sorrento lovely for a week’s stay, which for me was enough time

Room Tip: Book a Balcony Room with full seaview

I echo all the comments about the location of this hotel which is just great, right at the edge of the sea, views of Vesuvius etc. It's situated in Marina Grande 15mins walk out of Sorrento which is where the locals live and work which certainly adds to the feel of the place. The views are absolutely spectacular! I agree that it probably needs a bit of redecoration but the rooms are kept very clean, although I wasn't too keen on the wraparound shower curtain! Buffet and Gala evening meals a couple of times a week out on the terrace mean that you may have to sit with other people so some people may not like that. Food is pretty good and plenty of it, although the breakfast is a bit basic, no orange juice only grapefruit/pineapple for example. Staff are friendly although the head waiter doesn't smile too often!

If you want a 5 star hotel, go to one, but if you want good reasonably priced accommodation at a hotel with a fantastic location, friendly staff, reasonable food and atmosphere, the Admiral is for you. It certainly was for us.
My lady and I (50+) stayed here for a week recently (13th July – 20th July 2012) and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ok, the evening entertainment of a guy singing songs to the accompaniment of an electric organ might not be to everyone’s taste but the many attractions of the bright lights of Sorrento town are only minutes away (we thought he was ok).
I will repeat all the other positive reviews that have already been said as it is most of what I wanted to say, particularly:
Anne311247 “not the best hotel we have stayed at but it is now my all-time favourite”.
Lizzy063 “The Admiral is a 3 star with 5 star treatment”
We totally agree with both statements.
Our room was cleaned daily.
We needed a base in Sorrento so that we could visit the ruins, not just at Pompeii but also Herculaneum, Villa Poppaea and the Stabiae Villas.
The views of Naples, Vesuvius and the surrounding area are unsurpassed (be sure to book a full sea view).
The Marina Grande is a lovely little fishing village which locals from Naples and the surrounding area seem to frequent. It is a quiet area away from the main tourist centre of Sorrento although, paradoxically, it does get busy..
The walk up the steps was ok but we only went up twice. The rest of the time we took the bus up from the marina which runs at 20 past and 10 to the hour (with reasonable accuracy), €1.20 for each person to buy 60 minutes time on the local bus system, Marina Grande to Piazza Tasso 10 minutes (Ticket T1 bought from the Tabac at the stop) and then we always walked back down which was always a pleasant experience.
Use the local Circumvesuiana train to visit the sites, it is dirt cheap and a once in a lifetime experience.
Most the locals in Sorrento speak some level of English as most of their customers are from UK or US.
The Staff at the Admiral is generally fluent in English, as is the particularly efficient Francesco behind the desk, Mauro and friend behind the bar and the dinning staff.
Delfinos in the Marina is definitely worth a lunch or dinner, Prices all over Sorrento are very inflated but they do have to make their profits from one holiday season.
No fridge in room is a drawback and no tea and coffee making facilities in the room either (we took a travel kettle) but we can’t recommend the “Admiral Experience” highly enough, we had a ball.
As I said, if you want 5 Star this is not for you but if you want a base that is a character hotel in an excellent, quiet location, views to die for and within easy reach of Old Sorrento Town with its ferries to Capri, Positano, Amalfi and railways to Pompeii and Herculaneum this would be a good choice.
Thoroughly recommended.

Thank you to all Admiral Staff
We shall return

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The views from the poolside are breathtaking and we spent many an afternoon on a sun lounger enjoying the absolute tranquility looking out over the sea. Probably the most relaxed and peaceful atmosphere I have ever experienced in a hotel. It is a quiet hotel away from the hustle and bustle. The staff were great and so friendly.
The food was very average and could be better. I preferred the snack bar food to the evening meals. Three courses in the evenings- plenty to eat but I found the flavours rather bland. I would recommend the savoury crepes though- yum!
My one complaint would be that my room was directly above the kitchens and our sleep was greatly disrupted very early in the morning and late at night by the smashing of bottles into the dumpster.
The room was nice and kept very clean. We had a partial sea view and if you are booking independently it would be absolutely worth paying for a full sea view.
The area is lovely although visitors should be aware that it is a reasonable uphill walk to get into Sorrento. A bus service is available nearby though.
On the whole I would recommend the hotel, but I would say not to expect too much in terms of the food.

Hotel Admiral is in a great location with amazing views across the Bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius. It is very quiet as it situated at the end of Marina Grande. My Husband and I found the Hotel staff to be very friendly and the food was excellent. The was very clean ,however, some areas of the decor is a little tired. My husband and I think the ambience would be improved by some softer mood lighting in the dining room and lounge. There is lovely walk from the hotel to Sorrento. We're planning to return to Hotel Admiral and Sorrento for my forty birthday.
