“Perfect setting”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2014

The Admiral Hotel is in a beautiful location with perfect views over the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. We had booked a side sea view room with French balcony as a full sea view was unavailable but after arriving much later than anticipated after a very poorly organised transfer by Thomson Holidays we were allocated a room with window, room 104. The rooms are very basic, there is a lack of basic facilities in the room such as a mirror, fridge etc. The bed in this room was very uncomfortable and very noisy. We had to wait two days for a room change to room 109. This room had a large balcony over looking the sea which is a beautiful view. However, once again a lack of facilities and uncomfortable bed. This room was equally noisy, you can hear conversations and any movement, showers running and toilets flushing in the rooms adjoining and chairs being dragged around the lounge beneath the room. The central air conditioning system (not the room air con) can also be heard switching on and off throughout the night. The beds are clean but the rooms and bathrooms could be much cleaner.
We found the staff to be very helpful but over worked. Breakfast is poor with limited choice and gets very boring after a couple of days. The coffee served with breakfast is unpalatable which was very disappointing for an Italian hotel. Evening meals were on the whole OK but there is clearly an attempt to cut costs as much as possible. The gala evening and buffet evening meals were the best of the week. However when eating out at local restaurants we were always given a limoncello after the meal, this hotel offers limoncello at the end of the gala and buffet dinner then sends another member of staff with a check for you to sign to pay for the drinks.
The lounge has had a "makeover" but the high backed and dirty chairs are uncomfortable and the stark lighting is not relaxing enough for sitting and enjoying a drink after your dinner.
If the hotel was not in such a beautiful setting I doubt it would receive such positive reviews. It is easy to get into Sorrento on foot or by bus. We visited Capri, Ischia, Positano and Amalfi independently, we felt the organised excursions are not good value for money. The restaurants in the Marina are well worth visiting and good quality, particularly Taverna Azzurra.
We would not use Thomson Holidays again the service we received was appalling.

Room Tip: Request a room on a high floor if available and full sea view

We have just returned from a lovely week in Sorrento. Beautiful area. Will review everything separately:-
Thomson - Not impressed that driver used his mobile phone 4 times on way back from airport while driving around the sharp bends on the cliff edge. Put us off doing any Thomson trips.
If travelling with Thomson make sure you look for the welcome meeting when you arrive as we were not given a welcome pack and missed 95% of the meeting. The trip into Sorrento the Rep does is well worth going to as you get your bearings and he takes you to the Tourist Information Centre which is tucked away in a hotel and impossible to find otherwise. Good for getting bus and train timetables.
Hotel - Good bits :- Beautiful View. Excellent Food (the cheapest you will find at lunch time) though not as much Italian choices as I would have liked & no omlettes, pancakes or crossants for breakfast and had to ask for bananas as only found one in the fruit bowl all week. I was told off for taking my own drink into the restaurant. 2.5 euros for a small sprite. Large rooms with view of Vesuvius. Beautiful sunsets. Quiet sleeps. Buffet nights are very good and you get pizza which I didnt see on the menu any other time. I do not want to go to Italy to eat Mushroom Omlette. I go to Italy as I love the food and people. Lady on reception with long black hair is brilliant.
Bad bits:- Arrived very late at night to be greeted with a double bed when I was travelling with a child and had booked twin beds. Waited almost an hour to have them changed into single beds, was at one point asked to do that myself even though I had been travelling a very long time & asked for proof I had booked twin beds when I was travlling with a 17 year old. We had researched the hotel and found out they accommodated gluten intolerance. We asked the Rep 3 times for gluten free and didnt receive it once so over a week back and our stomachs are still bad. No sunshades on the sunbeds and only one on the tables. I feel the hotel could do a lot more for guests rather than trade on the view. Toiliteries were only replaced in the room once I remembered to leave a tip daily. Linen on the beds were only properly changed when I left them on the floor as they were dirty & had a hole in it. Not enough plugs had to unplug tv or lights to charge things. No fridge so drinks go warm. No tea/coffee facilities in room. Isolated and no courtesy bus. Can get bus into sorrento up to 10.25 p.m. but last bus back to Hotel is 8.10 p.m. and no-one once told us how to get back other than by bus and the walk is very dark and not good for anyone with walking difficulties/tiredness. No hot water one day (we werent the only ones). TV has only 1 American channel (no english) which disappeared half way through the week and despite asking no-one came to sort it out.
Trips:- You can do these very easily by bus/train. There are 2 courtesy busses from the marina. One at 5 past the hour and one at 25 past. You can buy tickets in the shop. You can get to the train station which is also the bus station. Train to Pompeii, Herculaneum (Erculano), Naples. Bus to Amalfi (then another bus at Amalfi to Ravello). Very cheap. Buy train tickets upstairs not in the shop downstairs.
Vesuvius - Take cash as no-one seems to take cards. Buy tickets outside Erculano Station. We went with Vesuvius Express office to left as you come out of station. 20 euros per person to the very top. Top very difficult if walking difficulties but well worth it.
Herculaneum (Now called Erculano) very nice and much smaller than Pompeii which we were told is 122 full size football pitches so we didnt go. Erculano much less crowded. Just walk out of the train station and straight down to the sea and you will find it.
Amalfi - get bus from train station, ticket stand just before you go up the first set of steps. 6.8 euros each for day pass hop on and off so you can get extra bus to Ravello. Much cheaper than tour operators and free to stay as long/short as you wish. Sit on opposite side to driver on way there and same side on way back for best views. Only drive yourself if you have nerves of steel, not for the faint hearted.
Ravello - get the bus from where the Amalfi bus drops you. When you get to Ravello walk through tunnel and then about 200 yards and turn left you go up some steps to a very pretty church, worth a look inside, then carry on up and turn left and you come to a restaurant Villa Maria with a beautiful view. Looks expensive at first but they have a lunch menu, pizza 7 euros sandwiches chips and salad 8 euro. View breathtaking, food very good and they grow their own organic vegetables.
Naples - Not as nice as Rome and covered in graffiti. If you like Amalfi, wouldnt bother doing Naples.
If like me you got swept up with the view from the hotel please consider the fact that you are isolated and its not easy getting anywhere unless you have a car especially at night. There is also nothing for children to do at the hotel.
Would I return. Definitely, Sorrento and Amalfi are beautiful, however I would probably stay at the Continental which is still by the water but on the main part of Sorrento but in a quiet location but a short walk from all the things to do in Sorrento.

Room Tip: If staying in this hotel ask for a room on the fourth floor as views are outstanding. Make sure you...

Only major problem we not told the hotel bill had to be paid in cash this cost us a lot in charges withdrawing cash which would have been much less in the UK. The staff were excellent service was exceptional. We booked through Thompson the worst experience We have ever had flights were booked with Monarch airlines. I received 6 emails advising that we should book seats and provide Passport info booking reference provided by Thompson was not recognised by them. I mailed customer service and was told because it was a different airline I would have to do this when checking in. What a surprise arriving at the airport we were not on the fight, fortunately Monarch agent was excellent and arranged our seats. Complained to Thompson reps about flights and hotel having to pay cash they were just not interested. Thompson had our money no service. When booking no warning about flight on different Airline

Before travelling we had heard from lots of different people that Sorrento was the place to holiday. Preferring small hotels we chose to stay at The Hotel Admiral through Thomson Holidays as they advertised it as a Small and Friendly hotel. The location is superb, being tucked at the end of the Marina Grande away from all traffic noise. The view from the hotel is amazing, encompassing Mount Vesuvius and a huge sweep of the Bay of Naples. The hotel itself is very clean and I particularly liked the fresh white décor with accent colours. The staff were friendly and helpful. This is the quietest hotel I have stayed in and being a teacher of small children I appreciated the lack of children at the hotel. Food was great with a wide choice over the week. All in all I would recommend this hotel to those who are looking for peace and quiet in a wonderful setting.

My boyfriend and I visited here in May for one week. We stayed in room 106 that had a huge balcony but there was quite a lot of noise coming from the reception area at 1.30am of staff dragging chairs along the floor and doors slamming constantly. The room was nicely decorated and very clean but the tv had no English channels and you could only get wifi near to the reception desk. The food was lovely especially the gala buffet evening but the breakfast can get quite boring after a couple of days. The hotel is within walking distance to the town centre, about 20 min walk uphill but there is a bus aswell. I would recommend this hotel but not for young couples.

Friendly staff, bar waiter gave it the personal touch by remembering your hotel room number and what drinks you liked. Clean. Stunning views. The only downfull was by the end of the afternoon the sun goes behind the cliff.

We have just returned from another fantastic holiday at this hotel, we went last year and returned again this year.its position right on the sea gives you wonderful views if you book a sea view room this is well worth paying a little more. The staff are always helpful and cheerful, the food is very good most of the time and the outside buffet on the decking is a real treat. The hotel is clean and towels are changed daily. We would return again anytime.

Room Tip: Be sure to book a room with full sea view, room105 has a large balcony and wonderful view.
