“A hotel with a view”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

We stayed at the Hotel Admiral early in June this year. We had room 310 which looked out over the pool and sea, it was a STUNNING VIEW!!!! over the bay of Naples. It is worth staying here if only to wake up to that view. The room was quite large and had a Queen sized bed, the only thing missing was a small fridge. The air con was brilliant We had a reasonable sized bathroom with a bath and an overhead shower.
Everything was lovely and clean and we had clean towels every day and bedding changed every other day. Our rooms seemed to be cleaned daily by lovely friendly cleaners. They even provided towels for using round the pool.
The food at the hotel was reasonable,(we chose half board ). The staff were always friendly and very helpful. We arranged all our own trips as it was easy and reasonable to get around by bus, train and boat. We would not hesitate to spend another holiday here.

Room Tip: Be sure to book a double room with a balcony and sea view.

I read some reviews before I went on holiday and they made me feel a bit anxious about booking the Hotel Admiral. As usual I should have realized - it is just the usual TripAdvisor little Britain-ers moaning.

We arrived at Hotel Admiral very late in the evening but they had thoughtfully prepared some food for us when we arrived and told us to feel free to take them to our room if we felt too tired for dinner. We were delighted with our 'partial sea-view room' which was very clean, had a bath and a small balcony. The rooms are decorated with bright modern touches. The hotel lobby is also nice and bright with free wi-fi and a bar where drinks are charged to your room (and cost the same, or even less than places in town).

There was a nice choice for breakfast. On my birthday I even treated myself to the tempting doughnuts. The pool and sunbathing area is small - but then so is the hotel and you are right next to a public beach as well as local restaurants who rent sunbeds and parasols. Towels are provided for the pool.

There are 4 or 5 choices for each of three courses at dinner in the Italian style of pasta first and then meat or fish next. Vegetarians are catered for and I noticed a guest having gluten-free options. The quality of our meals was consistently good thoughout our stay.

The best feature of the hotel is undoubtedly its location. Situated in Marina Grande - the older of Sorrento's two marinas - the hotel is close to restaurants serving fish caught by the local co-op of fisherman and a community that centres on Santa Ana church - right on the harbour. The Santa Ana co-op also run the sunbed hire on the beach as well as boat rental. Lots of local families were enjoying the school holidays on the beach. There was a fairly steep walk into Sorrento centre but some interesting religious shrines and good views on the way. A local bus does come to the harbour but we never used it. The atmosphere in the marina and the views from the hotel, either your room or pool area are well worth the extra walk.

Sorrento is a great base for exploring the Amalfi coast and the islands. We visited Pompeii, Ischia and Capri. We used local transport for Pompeii and Capri but booked the Thomson spa excursion to Ischia. It cut out some faffing but I think was quite expensive for what it was - especially as the spa is extra. The thermal spa was excellent though.

The staff at the hotel were all lovely - the bar staff, restaurant staff, reception staff and the local Thomson Rep.

I would definitely recommend the hotel - but perhaps not to guests with mobility issues. But then I don't think Sorrento with its hills and stairs would particularly suit people with mobility issues either. You see very few wheelchair users.

Don't be put off by negative reviews - this hotel is advertised as "small and friendly" and that's exactly what it was.

Room Tip: Ask for a partial sea view or sea view. We used one of the rooms at the other side of the hotel as a...

Having stayed at the admiral when the temperature was in the 30's, we enjoyed our stay, the position was better than being in the main centre. Nice to walk to the harbour and have a drink by the water's edge. Fairly easy walk to the centre yes up hill so if you have walking issues maybe a drawback. Agreed with previous previews as to the pool and patio areas, but we only used the patio area for a quiet sit down and to enjoy the fantastic view but that was late in the day when it became shaded. Pool area appeared to be too crowed with sunloungers not too our liking!!
We stayed in room 208 with a large double bed + a single bed so no issue with room size, patio was fairly small, two chairs a small low table, enough room for the two of us.
Food adequate, evening meal didn't go away hungry, gala night quite good plenty of food nice to eat outdoors, buffet night ample food and plenty of choice to suit all tastes, quality was very good, no issues with anything. Breakfast was nothing special but the same standard as other half board that I've used.
Now the buts! There were no hotel name leading to the hotel or on the building! And yes beware of lemonchello after the gala and buffet meals it's not free it all there on a tray ready poured as a complimentary drink, but then the sting of having to pay. The Thompson walk around sorrento some good and some bad points overall it is a take it or leave it, nothing on it essential to your stay.
Overall this hotel suited us position wise, so the drawbacks weren't an issue to us and we will consider a return trip in the future.

Room Tip: We had room 208, a three person room for two, so it was ideal for us, room below seemed to have one...

Just spent a week here, it's in a really nice location great views over the bay of Naples. The hotel is kept very clean and the staff are really pleasant. The one down side was you had to pay your bar bill in cash as they don't have a credit card facility.

My husband and I returned a week ago from this hotel as others have said this is not 4 star but a good 3. We paid extra for a sea facing room which was excellent, could lay in bed and watch the boats on the sea. The food was ok but have had better in a 3 star in other part of Italy. Thomson tours are very expensive we went to Pompeii on the local train which cost less than 5 euros return and what Thomson don't tell you is that if you are under 18 or over 65 you don't pay to go in so we had a great day for next to nothing! The return plane journey was horrendous, having pre printed our boarding cards and having our seat numbers when we arrived at check in at Naples we were told that we couldn't have seats together and we had one seat in row 9 and one in row 26,our original number. When we got on the plane there was chaos as this had happened to many people. We will never travel with Thomson again and others said this also.

Room Tip: Choose a sea facing higher floor.

Starting off on a good note - the location was the absolute best in Sorrento, just out of the noise and a few steps to the beach and multiple bars and restaurants. Our room 302 was a nice size, clean and suitable for us. Although no mini fridge, so warm water all around. The air conditioning made the room comfortable and we had a nice view over the marina. We found most of the staff friendly and helpful. The communal balcony provided beautiful views and pleasant place to dine.

The downsides - and sadly there are a few.

Rating - claim to be four star - but an absolute three at best.

Bar - we wrongly assumed that non-alcoholic drinks would be included in our evening meals, as this was half board. Alcoholic drinks were very expensive and we became aware of our astronomical bar bill about 4 days - had water the rest of our stay (at 2.50 euro a pop).

Tourist tax - was not aware of this at all, on top of our hefty bar bill there was 21 euro for tax. Hurray.

Food - i found it OK. My partner found it almost inedible. If we could have afforded to eat out every night we would have. Pasta and seafood dishes proved the best.

Excursions through Thomsons - this was the killer for us. We loved the Pompeii half day - excellent and i highly recommend it.
However the Capri and Anacapri excursion was diabolical. We were looking forward to this one, being told by our rep and the brochure that we would need a few extra euros for the chair lift and that lunch was included. We come to find however that the whole tour is planned around the assumption that you will pay out for all the optional extras. This left myself and my partner on the docks of Capri for the first hour of the tour while the rest of the group went on the "optional" boat ride around the island at 16 euros a head. After this we travelled to Anacapri via bus and were walked to the centre where we would have our lunch - turns out we had to pay. Our tour guide recommended a restaurant and took us all there where they had reserved many tables for our group. The guide must have a deal with this restaurant - the food was diabolical and while the price was reasonable we came out wishing we had just got a sandwich. After that most of the group went on the chairlift at 10 euros a head (hardly the few euros stated in the brochure). Again we missed out but our tour guide took us on a nice walking tour. The last part of the day was spent in Capri where we couldn't even afford to buy a coffee (4 euros) and just counted down the minutes til we left. EXTREMELY dissapointed with this excursion. No one made us aware we would need an extra 100 euro on top of the 80 we paid per person to actually make the tour worthwhile. Came back very upset and frustrated.

Transport links - on our way back to Naples airport ourselves and 2 other couples were left behind by the minibus, despite being where we were told to be by the hotel (the wrong place) and on time. When Thomsons and the hotel finally sorted in we were stuck on a bus with no airconditioning in the hottest part of the day for an hour. Awful.

Overall we came away for this experience very disappointed, we are a young couple on low wages and paid around £1000 for the week in sorrento and expected more. We saved hard for our spending money and ended up throwing it away on bad excursions and hidden hotel costs leaving us unable to even afford a souvenir to bring home. Will never travel with Thomsons again.

Room Tip: Sea views on top floors

Hidden Gem. Who wouldn't want to wake up, open their curtains and patio door, walk out on their balcony and gaze over the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. Magical. Our second visit to the hotel. A big thank you to all the staff for a fabulous stay. Hope to see you again. xx
