“Great view, excellent location, warm and friendly staff”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

You need to have a car to enjoy the hotel and the drive through Sorrento is challenging, but the accommodations are 3+ star, the view of Naples Bay is outstanding and the staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast is more than adequate and the dinner we had one evening was of reasonable quality, but not memorable. Take the path down to the beach to enjoy your evening meals and you will come away with a quite positive of your stay at Hotel La Badia.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Bay of Naples.

This is an attractive hotel set on the slopes of a hill on the South side of Sorrento. It enjoys views of Capri, Vesuvius and the bays of Sorrento and Naples. Although a 10 minute drive or bus trip from the town, there is a pleasant 20 minute walk down a path and some steps as an alternative. Being an old monastery and in the hands of the present family for the past 100 years, it has lots of character and well-maintained décor. Our room on the top floor commanded the best views, which were only slightly impaired by having a small round bedroom window from which to enjoy them. The first floor sea-view rooms had balconies which were better. The accommodation was a bit Spartan, with the minimum of furniture and limited drawer space. We lived partly out of suitcases for our week there. The en suite bathroom was separated by a sliding door from the bedroom which was a disadvantage. The poor sound insulation between the two rooms was unwelcome as there are some noises you don’t want transmitted. The shower cubicle was functional but the temperature of the water was subject to extreme variations with little warning. The wash basin was small and had a uni-tap so that when shaving it was impossible to swill water on one’s face. The water is hard with a high mineral content. It was not problem to drink it but it didn’t do one’s skin or hair any favours. A 9 in square window provided the only ventilation. The beds were firm, which drew some comments from other guests. The bedding and towels seemed to be changed everyday which was excellent. The safe and minibar were welcome additions. The restaurant is charmingly decorated and the waiters are excellent. Their courtesy and helpfulness exceeded expectations. I have a garlic intolerance and the staff took every care in completely avoiding contamination of my food over the holiday period. The half-board option worked well with the 3-course evening meal selection being made at breakfast from a menu having a good variety of choices. Lunches were available at a reasonable cost. Soft drinks were expensive and a small bottle of beer was 4 euros. All the staff spoke some English and showed great consideration to guests. There is a nice outdoor pool and surrounding area with towels available for 1 euro for the whole period of stay. The people from our tour party who chose accommodation in Sorrento town centre never realised what they had missed. It was a very enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Choose first floor with a sea view

We spent three nights at Hotel La Badia on a recent trip to the Amalfi Coast. We traveled with another couple -- on our own, not part of a tour group. La Badia does host tour groups on a regular basis, but that did not interfere with our enjoyment -- it did always seem to be very peaceful at the Hotel.

The Hotel is a beautiful old villa -- the grounds are simply gorgeous and the views are as good as it gets. The swimming pool is lovely, as are the outdoor terraces. We enjoyed the breakfasts very much -- there was always a variety of cold items, including hard boiled eggs. The coffee was strong and wonderful and they served it to you in your own little pot so you could have plenty of refills. The staff was excellent, very friendly and willing to help. The owner herself is charming and friendly, so you would expect the same from the people who work there.

This hotel is not down in the center of Sorrento -- that's the good news if you enjoy peace and quiet and beautiful surroundings. The bad news is that, unless you have a rental car or call for a cab, it is a long walk down to the city and back. We did have the impression there was a shuttle bus, but evidently that is only for the folks who are part of a tour group. We chose not to eat at the hotel because we wanted to explore the many options down in Sorrento -- this meant two round trips on foot each day. (A side benefit from all that walking was that we never worried about topping off a big pasta dinner with some gelato!) We are well into retirement, but we all got quite used to the walk. Obviously, uphill is hardest, but there are not many steps. We had packed small flashlights which I do recommend for coming back to the hotel in the dark -- for one thing, it may save you from being mowed down by a Vespa!

Room Tip: There are a few rooms with adjoining terraces, with magnificent views of the sea and many rooms with...

A hidden gem, very authentic hotel used to be a monastery run by a lovely Italian family who look after you and cant do enough. Wonderful location views to die for from their open terrace weather permitting they serve dinner on this terrace . Lovely walk into Sorrento all down bank hard coming back up as week goes on you get fitter and the walk home gets easier but again amazing views. Not for anyone with walking difficulties. Food simple and of high quality lovely swimming pool. Gala night fabulous Grazi

Would definitely return

Room Tip: All rooms have a great view however we had the courtyard at the back of the hotel had its own table...

We had a marvellous stay 3rd week of May 2014- there was a warm welcome upon arrival.
The food was very tasty and the service excellent.
Light and airy room with fantastic views over the bay, ours had a balcony with table and chairs - even saw a tall ship along with the other cruise ships in the bay.
Every thing was very clean and fresh towels every day.
The location is ideal only a short walk into Sorrento and coming back although uphill is no problem.
Dining alfresco on the fabulous terrace, again with fantastic views was a very pleasurable experience.
Plenty of seating and even hammocks in the grounds again with views of the bay.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 36

I found this on booking dot com and what a great hotel. I am siting at my window looking over the Mediterranean Sea and Mount Vesuvius in the distance over the Mediterranean Sea-it doesn't get much better than this!
The restaurant was great and atmosphere was great ( you know you want experience rather than another bloodily monument!)
I would recommend this place in a heart beat!

Room Tip: Just ask for a great view!

Where do I start? It has to be the food. Probably the worst dinner I have had in a hotel. A piece of unnamed fish taken off the bone and served with 2 small frozen type potato croquets and some over cooked TINNED peas. The fish was full of bones in every mouthful. I gave up. It was a good job I’d had a large pizza for lunch.
Who serves food like this? To be fair one night we had a starter of cannelloni which was simply the best pastor I’ve tasted. Somebody has to get a grip of the food. It was average at best, boring and very repetitive. It dragged down the standard of the whole hotel. Frankly I remember better school dinners. I suspect this may have something to do with how much Riviera is prepared to pay the hotel.
The room we had was disappointing. Small and dark looking over the hill side and not the bay. Riviera gave us no option to choose a sea view although it had been booked some 8 months ago.
With a little work this hotel could be transformed into something fantastic. It has the most beautiful views and location among the olive groves. Sort out the food and the other little niggles could be almost forgiven. Almost. The one thing I won't forgive are the hard pillows which made sleeping very difficult and unpleasant.

Room Tip: Demand a sea view when you book. We weren't given a choice.
