“A wonderful hotel"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2009

Recently stayed at the La Badia Hotel, Sorrento, whilst on a Riviera holiday. The hotel was lovely - in a quiet location overlooking the Bay of Naples, with clean attractive (and good-sized) bedrooms, excellent service, friendly staff - would highly recommend it.

La Badia is beautifuuly set ,high on a hill above Sorento . It is a small family owned hotel with friendly, helpful staff . It is in fact quite charming. However whilst breakfasts were excellent the food at dinner was awful!!Stay there and enjoy the pool, the olive groves and the ambiance but dont stay for dinner.!!!

We stayed here at the end of their season with Riviera Travel and it 'did what it said on the packet!' A very adequate 3 star (by Italian standards) with super service and attention. Having read previous reviews, we were aprehensive, but to our delight, suprised! Yes, there is room for improvement, but 'you pays your money ......' Would definitely return.

Location was great - on top of hill overlooking Sorrento. 10 minute walk down to Sorrento - but 20 minutes back for most people. All staff speak English and are friendly without being familiar. We thought the food was pretty good and there was an adequate wine list - all priced at 15 Euros a bottle. Room was comfortable and spotlessly clean, beds were firm and shower was tempremental. if you use an electric shaver, take an adaptor.

Stayed here for a week as a base for sightseeing in the area, well positioned for visiting Pompeii, Vesuvius, Herculaneum etc. Hotel itself is charming and comfortable, but let down by poor food in the restaurant, lack of hot water when showering and awful towels. Staff in the restaurant very friendly, but seemed to struggle to cope at busy times.

View of the bay of Naples & Vesuvius from the hotel terrace is pretty spectacular.

Pool area very pleasant, though quite small. Word of warning - the water in the swimming pool is freezing!

Had a week in August using Riviera Holidays. Hotel is very nice, owners and staff very helpful. Food is fine but not top class, we were on half board package with choice each night from 3 starters and 3 mains all nicely served by excellent and friendly waiting staff and good choice of wines, Breakfast offered good choice with meat, cheese eggs, bread and pastries etc but not much fruit (surprising as it was often offered with dinner).

Most rooms have good views, some have balconies but 3 on front have terraces which give a view over the Bay of Naples and you really need to go for one of these to get the best out of your stay. Pool area is very nice, well kept and clean. Location up on hill means it is very quiet with lovely sunset views if dining on the terrace. Rooms clean and comfortable with air conditioning.

If you need internet they will let you use their system but was a bit steam driven. Wi Fi would have been nice and don't understand why more hotels don't offer it as all it takes is a wireless router in reception area which would satisfy most people.

The La Badia is a three-star hotel which suggests an adequate but not luxurious place where value for money is a priority. And that is how we found it. It has a magnificent location high on a hill overlooking Sorrento and with Vesuvius on the horizon – on a clear day. The terrace where you dine if the weather is fine is lovely. Whilst I am sure that it is possible to book the hotel as an independent traveller whilst we were there the hotel was 90% occupied by British guests on Riviera Holidays trips – as were we. Catering for the British meant that all the signs in the hotel were in English and that the food was a sort of anglicised Italian. A few surprises - a wonderful minestrone on the last night and some pretty good fish – but generally not awfully inspiring cuisine. The breakfast buffet was OK – all cold food but nothing to complain about.

The rooms are apparently all different - ours (22) was fine (on the second floor but there is a lift). The staff at the hotel were very pleasant and jolly with excellent English and very welcoming. All serious drinks seemed to be 6 Euros and the Campari Soda could have been stronger and better mixed – but that’s a quibble. Budget 15 Euros a bottle for the wine – again of satisfactory quality but perhaps a bit over-priced. The pool was excellent and never too crowded. It’s a pool to be a goldfish in swimming in circles rather than doing Rebecca Adlington type training sessions! If you need to keep in touch with the real world you will find that although the hotel has a Wifi link that is really for their own use and not for guests. I couldn’t make it work. This is something that they need to fix if they are to attract internet/Email addicts! The walk into Sorrento is not as fearsome as it might seem – but not for those with dodgy knees or other mobility problems. Use Riviera’s free taxi service if you are on one of their holidays.
