“Stunning hotel, now our favourite Hotel in the world.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2011

La Minervetta is simply stunning, the location, the views, the rooms, the service..in fact everything. We had seen the excellent reviews on here, so had high expectations..but they were all surpassed. It is in a perect setting, sitting on the cliffs high above Marina Grande (the quieter part of Sorrento), with views across the bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvious. The style of the hotel could best be described as "funky", with art works, books, magazines in every nook and cranny. The rooms are excellent, with amazing views from all windows. We had a "de luxe" room, which I think is their standard room. A very good size and very well appointed, with a floor to ceiling sliding door, opening to a french balcony.
There are lots of steps down to the Harbour, where there are a number of very good restaurants and no noisy late night bars! The centre of Sorrento is a 15-20 minute walk..with a wider choice of restaurants, bars and shops.
Half way down the steps you have the grassy terrace with sun loungers and the pool...kind of a cold, large jacuzzi...very nice to cool off whilst sun bathing.
Breakfast is a buffet served in the "kitchen", which you eat out on the terrace....with the view across the bay. They also make fresh pancakes, egss, coffee, etc to order...the buffet is fruit, cereals, then loads of local pastries, ham and cheese.
We went to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary, and we could not have chosen a better pace...it is very much a couples, romantic, celebration place with most of the comments in the guestbook being people on honeymoon, or celebrating an anniversary or birthday.
You can have also have drinks on the terrace at any time of day..a very nice pre dinner stop! The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful without being obtrusive...they recommended "Delfino" down in the harbour for dinner..which was superb...the best Parmagiana de Malanzane I have ever had!
This has now taken over as our favourite hotel anywhere in the world (previously was Babbington House), and we will be going back at some point.

We stayed here during a stop in Sorrento during our honeymoon after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor. The decor is stunning, extremely clean, great library of English books to borrow and read, and gorgeous views. The pool is on the small side, but there is so much to do in Sorrento and La Minervetta is more of an urban retreat than a sprawling resort. Short walk downtown and the little fishing village just below the hotel has great restaurant choices. The staff was friendly and helpful. We would absolutely go back!

My wife and I stayed 4 nights early July 2011. It’s our second trip to La Minervetta. Both times we’ve had one of the corner rooms.

The location is superb. Fantastic views and not too much trouble to walk into town and we particularly like being able to go straight down the private stairs to the fishing village to eat or make use of the sun bathing facilities at Delfino which now seem to be part of staying at La Minervetta. You probably need to be reasonably healthy although not necessarily fit as there’s a lot of steps to make best use of the location.

Staff have been very helpful and can assist you with suggestions for things to do, how to do them and places to eat, and will book on your behalf.

I do love the place so why did I only give it 4 stars? I feel it’s gotten a little dated and doesn’t offer value for the price range it falls into. The rooms need slightly updating, especially the wheezing aircon that has a hard time trying to get down to a reasonable temperature, the wooden flooring has gone a little odd and many of the objects around the room are chipped or broken . The breakfast, although fantastic most of the time, can be inconsistent. The staff, although most of the time are incredibly friendly and helpful can again be inconsistent. Hope you’re not in a hurry if you order a drink. I don’t like the way they tuck themselves away in the little office – I’m sure given a funky laptop and phone and they could sit out in the communal areas and be more “available” and be more fitting with the “homely” atmosphere the hotel has. It would be nice, as a “hotel”, to be able to offer some sort of food all the time – nothing special; Panini, bread, cheese and meats would do. I’d love to see them replace the railings with glass so you can properly sit back and appreciate the views. Not to offer wireless as part of the €370 a night room this day and age is criminal (I stayed in Capri and Positano, and free wifi available in much cheaper places). The WiFi packages here were more expensive than using a roaming 3G bundle on my iPhone and less convenient. What’s with the inconvenience of the stair key – can’t you just let me have the extra key full time rather than me having to make my way up (often from the pool area) to collect a key to go all the way back down again. It would be nice to see them maybe offer a treatment area or gym equipment in one of the many nook and crannies they have. All in all, I’ve stayed in better boutique hotels for the same money which give a lot more value and service.

Wow, that’s quite a lot of negative now I’ve written it down. Please don’t get me wrong this is a fantastic place and if we were going back to Sorrento we would most likely stay here again. I also think that my wife would still give this place 5 stars as probably doesn’t look at the world as I do in “how could this be better”. If you’re interest in books and photography, then you will love the library of books dotted around the entire hotel. If you’re interested in eclectic art and design you’ll love this place, the communal areas are full of some great stuff. If you love a quirky bedroom, then they are great. And the views … well I know there’s a lot of views around the Amalfi coast but this has one of the best vantage points.

La Minervetta is an outstanding boutique hotel perched on a cliff overlooking la Marina Grande in Sorrento. There is nothing "standard" about this hotel - the rooms and common areas are beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, the staff is attentive, very friendly, and the general vibe throughout is very relaxed. Accommodations include an outstanding breakfast buffet each morning that's served in the kitchen area and can be enjoyed on the incredible outdoor patio area that overlooks Sorrento. For us, La Minervetta served as an ideal location to base our 6 day visit to the Amalfi Coast. We rented a car (the hotel has a parking lot), drove to a number of towns along the coast, and had easy access to the multitude of ferries that leave from Marina Picolla in Sorrento. The hotel is a short walk outside of the main town area of Sorrento, making it a very peaceful oasis throughout the day. We hope to return sometime soon.

Room Tip: Request the superior corner rooms.

We just got back from Sorrento and I think the highlight of the trip was this hotel. The hotel was beautiful, very modern with beautiful views. It was a short walk, maybe 15 minutes from where all the stores were which we initially thought was going to take us longer but it was a nice walk to the 'action' and a quiet location to retreat to after as well. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the best breakfast we had on our entire trip! They did not serve lunch or dinner but the restaurants they recommended were great and some of the best restaurants we ate in were located just literally down the back stairs...we were sad to leave. Would strongly recommend.

One of the most magical places on earth. My favorite hotel in the world. Clearly put together with love and artistry. Every inch considered and wonderfully executed. Our second visit, with more to come. Not for everyone, as some reviews point out. It is a walk to town. We loved the walk. The breakfast isn't American, we adored the breakfast. Fresh fruit, freshly squeezed juice, fresh pastries, eggs or pancakes. What more could you want?

The rooms aren't huge, but they are enchanting.

The hotel is not inexpensive, but the quality and details and view make it so worth the cost.

And the view. Ahhhhh, the view. I could spend the entire day breathing in the view. The bay of Naples. Vesuvios. The boats. The birds soaring below!

We cannot rate this hotel highly enough.

My wife and I spent our 25th wedding anniversary at La Minervetta. Our stay was awesome. We were greated by Floriana who spoke great english and walked us through the hotel and all it's amentities. Over the next five days we interacted which I believe was the entire staff and everyone acknowleded our presence and were very helpful when asked. It is such a small hotel so it never felt crowded. The atmosphere in the hotel is laid back but the staff was very attentive. Many evenings we spent on the large comfortable porch overlooking the Bay of Naples drinking wine and relaxing in the faint glow of 50 candles which lit the porch at night. Often we were the only ones. They don't have a bar per se but do have drink service it seemed like 24 hours a day which they would bring to you in your room, at the pool or on the porch. There are only six chairs next to the cold water spa. These chairs would fill up at different times throughout the day. We used the pool on two occasions and never had a problem. There are other lounges set out on the porch and landing areas to accomidate everyone and you are only a minute from the pool if you want to cool off. We enjoyed breakfast because it was not your typical american breakfast. Plenty of fresh fruit and juices, pastries which varied each day, cereal's with dried fruits, meats and cheeses from Italy, the delicious Caprese salad. If you needed an American fix they would make eggs to order but I did not go to Italy to have McDonalds. That is what made breakfast so unique. We ate outside each day and it seemed like the staff arranged the tables in twos or fours based on the different groups staying at the hotel. During our stay I believe all the guests I spoke with were from the UK or USA. Our room was great. If you are able stay in room 3 take it. It overlooks the bay, marina and the mountains. The airconditioning worked quite well on the 90 degree days we were there. One problem was in the morning the sun would beat down on the windows so when you opened the blinds the temperature in the room would rise until the sun was higher in the sky.
Itdoes sit high on a mountain so the walk down the 300 steps to the marina is quite easy. Getting back on the other hand is a challange. If you are not in running shape you will need to take your time like we did and made it back up in 7 to 10 minutes stopping at numerous landings. For those with heart issues or just too drunk to walk there is a public bus service which ran every twenty minutes which would take you to the top of the hill. The cost for a ticket is 7 Euros for 24 hour unlimited rides on any city bus. We found this very convenient since we walked into town several times a day but often did not feel like walking back and hopped on the bus whch drops you off about 30 ft. from the hotel. Most times however it was a nice stroll after dinner to work off some of the pasta calories. It takes about 15 minutes a leisurely pace. I cannot find many faults here that I have not run accross in the US and I have traveled alot. But it is not the Four Seasons so if you are that type of traveler then this is not the place for you. As an American I felt slightly embarressed by a family who should have been staying at the Four Seasons. I do not think this hotel is geared for families with children. This family of four came and requested adjoining rooms which would not be available for one night. The matriach of this family basically hounded the staff on numerous occasions when all they could do was wait until one guest left then clean the room. It was a minor inconvenience in a country where inconvenience seems to be the rule and not the exception. Bottom line you will enjoy the place. We will be back.
