“Best stay in Italy!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 October 2009

We toured all over Italy during our 2 week vacation. I did extensive research searching for the perfect places to stay in each town. We stayed in some wonderful places, but this one was the best.

Despite the weather being blah, the room heater working but underperforming (calibration issue with the thermostat I think), and the bathroom down the stairs and through the "family room", this was our favorite stay. Why? Because of Pasquale. He is a wonderful personality, and this care for his guests shows in the entire experience of your stay. Fresh cake and water were provided on our arrival. A computer which can be used by the guests (ask first though!) There were extra pillows in the room, just like I like. He made a dinner reservation and chaufferred us back and forth to a great, non-tourist restaurant. His witty conversation and sense of humor make it impossible to believe he just started learning English 4 years ago. If that is truly the case, Pasquale is a genius.

Anyway, the place was wonderful. Postcard views from the room terrace. Chauffer service everywhere, so our tired walking legs got a welcome break from the extended walking we did in the other cities we visited. It was also one of our least expensive stays. Highly recommended - thanks Pasquale!

We arrived in Sorrento and called Pasquale (the owner) - who led us up the hill to Villa Monica. It's a few minutes out of the city center, but this was just what we were looking for after a few noisy nights in downtown Rome. The rooms are lovely. Clean, well decorated, and very quiet at nights - with amazing views off the balcony of Sorrento, Naples and Mt. Vesuvius in the distance.

Pasquale was an great host. Breakfast in the mornings was very nice. He also provides a shuttle service from the Villa to the center of Sorrento and gave us plenty of tips on what to do and what to skip during our stay. His recommendations were spot on and it was nice to have someone from the area give you the "insider scoop" on what is best to avoid.

Sorrento is a nice (but somewhat touristy) town with easy access to Naples and Capri. We took the train from Sorrento to Pompeii which was around 30 minutes.

Overall - we loved our stay at Villa Monica and Sorrento. If we're ever back in that part of Italy again we will be looking up Pasquale's phone number!

What more can be said about Villa Monica B&B that hasn't been said already? We spent 4 nights at Villa Monica last September and had an excellent stay. Pasquale is a wonderful host. He is funny, well organized, very helpful and always professional. Eventhough the B&B is located 4km from the town centre (at the top of a very steep hill... do not try to walk up... believe me!) we had no problem getting around. Pasquale has established a shuttle schedule and it works perfectly. We stayed in the Sorrento room. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, we had an ensuite bathroom and a spectacular view of the Bay of Naples and the Vesuvius. Every morning we enjoyed fresh fruits, cereals, selection of cheese, cold cuts and pastries for breakfast and Pasquale makes the best cappuccino! If you're planning on staying in Sorrento this is the place you have to go! Thanks again for everything Pasquale!

We spent 3 nights in Sorrento at Villa Monica and it was a great finale to a wonderful trip! Pasquale was friendly, personable, helpful and had a great sense of humor. He picked us up at the train station and drove us up to the villa (and you will want the ride, or you can drive - but don't take a big car!). The room was large, very clean, with a comfortable bed, sitting area, a balcony, and an incredible view of the Bay of Naples and Mt .Vesuvius from the bed! It was wonderfully quiet. While not within walking distance of downtown (hence the reason it is quiet!), Pasquale has set up a very convenient "shuttle" schedule for getting up and down to central Sorrento (it is about a 10 minute drive and a 1500' climb up the hill). His suggestions for dinner were spot-on, and wonderful! Breakfasts at villa monica were served outside on the lower deck, with a full selection of fruits, yogurt, breads and pastries (from Monica's pastry shop!), cheeses, cereal, cappucino, etc. - no excuse for going hungry. With a satellite tv in the lower family room, we even caught a little of the Napoli/Milan soccer match (although Naples didn't have a good game, which was disappointing to our host!). I'd highly recommend Villa Monica for someone who wants to interact with their host and other guests, does not have to be staying right "in the middle" of everything, but has easy access to everything and values a quiet, (and my wife adds - romantic) and friendly place to stay.

I have just returned from a week at Villa Monica, with my partner and my mum and dad. It was my parents first trip abroad and their first time flying, so consequently they were going to take some persauding to deviate from their regular holidays on the South Coast. So I sent my parents the link to the reviews on trip advisor for Villa Monica and they couldn't say no!

If you have read the previous reviews you will doubtless have extremely high expectations, you will also have read everything that can be said about the establishment, the view and the superb service provided by Pasquale and the more reviews that are written the harder it becomes to write something original! Having said that Pasquale deserves his number one ranking for Villa Monica bed and breakfast, so I wanted to ensure that I did my bit to keep him there.

Maybe it would be useful (for potential guests and Pasquale) to remind you what Villa Monica is not, so that you have high, but , realisitic expectations. Villa Monica is not a large hotel, it is not in the centre of town, with shops and restaurants on your door step. It does not have a bar, or a restaurant, or a pool, or a 24 hour reception desk. If you were planning a beach holiday or a city break these things may be important considerations - but ultimately you go to the Amalfi coast for the sites, the scenery and the culture.

Staying at Villa Monica offers you a tranquil base from which you can truly appreciate what the area has to offer - its location provides a picture postcard view, its host Pasquale provides the level of personal service that can never be matched by a large hotel and his transport service to the centre of Sorrento provides easy access to the shops, restaurants and transport services to the regions many tourist sites. It is well worth taking on board Pasquale's advice on the local restaurants and be sure to ask him which should be avoided in the centre. He can also advise on the best way to reach the various destinations and arrange reasonably priced transfers to and from Naples airport - we paid €65 each way (for those arriving by train, Pasquale will collect you from the station - don't attempt to walk to the villa or pay for a taxi!).

So to summarise, Pasquale delivers an excellent service with good humour. My parents room had a large en suite shower room, ours had a large bathroom with jacuzzi bath next door to the bedroom - both were kept clean and towels were refreshed daily. The third room has a private bathroom located downstairs just off the kitchen area (robes and slippers are provided). The continental breakfast is substantial. The views from the 3 rooms sell the villa!

Oh and I should say that Pasquale is 'a very good driver' (he reminded us of that every time he squeezed his RAV4 through the tiny gap between the wall and metal gate at the bottom of the private road leading to the villa!!)

Villa Monica was a great find! The view from the room was incredible. The B & B is up in the hills of Sorrento but you have Pasquale to shuttle you to the town and back. He has on demand service for pick upon arrival. Pasquale help us us with our Capri plans and let us use his PC for email checks. The breakfast was great! His cafe americano is the closest we had to US coffee. The Monica bakery is a find. Make sure you try it.

The experience is only topped by Pasquale himself. He speaks English and can help with problems. His humor is relentless and calming. This is the place in Sorrento!

We've just returned home after a five-night stay at Villa Monica, and can't praise Villa Monica enough.

Set up in the hills, away from the hyper-touristy kitsch that is the centre of Sorrento, it's a haven of tranquillity with an amazing view over the town and beyond. Breakfast is lovely, the rooms are comfortable, and it's a great place to return to after a heavy day of sight-seeing.

Pasquale, the owner, is an excellent host; he is very friendly, and extremely accommodating, and he's always happy to help. He also offers a free 'shuttle' service between the town and the villa that takes almost no time at all - definitely good value for money when you consider the high rates for taxis. There is a timetable for pick-ups, but on more than one occasion, Pasquale was perfectly happy to accommodate us when we needed a bit more flexibility.

I utterly disagree with the one 'Poor' review on this site - our priorities are obviously very different. If you want impersonal, clinical, 5-star accommodation, there are plenty of corporate hotels in the centre of Sorrento; however, if you're looking for a welcoming, genuinely Italian experience in a charming and peaceful environment, with views that can't be matched in Sorrento town, then this is the place for you. We're both looking forward to going back again in future, and will certainly be recommending Villa Monica to everyone we know...
