We had stayed at Hotel Caesar Augustus on Capri for two nights on a tour trip the 1st week of May (2013). We ended coming back for two more nights on our own the next week and stayed at La Scalinatella. We liked it much better than the Caesar Augustus. Our room was fantastic (especially for Italy)- probably 600 Sq Ft. -2 baths and great view. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. When we left, they booked a private driver and tour of Pompei- they took care of everything! If you are looking for a great hotel, this is it.

Astonishing location, incredible people working here make you feel home. The quality of the bar and restaurant make you feel you do not have to move from here. But Capri have too many good place to eat so you'll take your walking shoes and go! But if you don't want to move you can spend all day here. Great rooms, with subtle luxuries yet elegant and very comfortable. An AC that if you want can transform your room in a fridge in a matter of minutes( and this is non very frequent in Italy) yet very quiet. Room service the quickest and most courteous I have aver experienced. And I have seen a lot of superstar place falling on this not simple task. The perfect hotel in Capri. Not very cheap... Keep it in mind. But if you want to fell like a loved king come here once in your life. Worth to make a Small mortgage!

Room Tip: ask for room on the second floor: They have a HUGE balcony! and a great view!

As we disembarked from the ferry on Capri, we were met by Sergio from La Scalinatella. He took our bags and sent them along to the hotel and then escorted us to the funicular where he gave us tickets and directions to the hotel from the piazza. Our rooms were upgraded and we had gorgeous views of the town and the Bay of Naples as well as a private patio for our leisure moments. Service was impeccable for the two days of our stay. The rooms were spacious, clean and well appointed. We even had his and hers bathrooms. The hotel is decorated in a 1930s period style, but everything worked, including free Wi-fi. We would definitely stay there on our next visit to Capri.

Room Tip: The suites with terrace and his/hers bathrooms are worth the extra cost for the luxury and view you...

We enjoyed our three night stay in the Scalinatella. (We had booked the Casa Morgano, which is under the same ownership, and were transferred on arrival, without explanation).

The small property (a converted mansion?) is peacefully located on the Via Tragara, a short distance from the Via Camerelle, which links it to the Piazetta, a walk of less than ten minutes - although keen shoppers might take longer as the Via Camerelle is the premier retail location on the island. There is no taxi access but given notice the hotel will transport guests’ baggage from the ferry terminal (for a fee).

Typical for the island, the hotel clings to a slope and the views are splendid. The pool area is relatively small but looks good - we didn’t use it, as the weather wasn’t appropriate. There is free and uncomplicated WiFi throughout the building and a public computer in the lobby. The immediate area is quiet as the day-trippers generally don’t go there. The hotel isn't suitable for people with mobility handicaps (but neither is Capri).

Our room was large and elegantly furnished, with a terrace and a big and well-equipped bathroom.

Breakfast is a combination of a buffet and table service and we the quality and choice was good. Apart from breakfast, the hotel provides only snack food.

All the staff we met were very pleasant, efficient and helpful.

The Scalinatella is not cheap and extras are expensive, like everything in Capri. While it is not the five star property is claims to be, it is a good four star plus.

Tip - we thought the standard Blue Grotto trip a waste of time and money.

We spent six days here over Easter. The weather was poor but the staff were so friendly and kind. Since the hotel does not have a restaurant the staff gave us excellent suggestions each night as to where we could eat. Every where is very expensive but the standard is good.
Our room was perfect, gorgeous view, two bathrooms and plenty of room. The free WIFI was appreciated . The metal electronic blinds enabled us to sleep in a dark room, overcoming jet lag more easily. The hotels location was just right far enough away from the busy areas.
Breakfast was served by kind considerate waiters. Freshly squeezed blood orange juice, delicious melon and for my husband perfectly cooked eggs. Only negative that one had to have good walking abilities to enjoy the area to the full.

Room Tip: Room 64 had a nice sized terrace, perfect views and a Capri style head board. The sofas looked new a...

We stayed at this beautiful hotel at the end of October, so the island was starting to wind down for the season. They were able to upgrade us two levels up! The rooms were great, and the view from our balcony was breathtaking!

Breakfast, made it order, on the hotel veranda is included!

We stayed at Hotel Scalinatella for two nights in early October and can't say more about this lovely hotel in Capri. First, the location is ideal, located just outside the heart of Capri town at the end of a beautiful garden path overlooking the sea. You are close enough to walk to everything in town, but far enough outside that you are away from the crowds. The hotel feels quiet and secluded and has incredible views. The staff treated us like we were the only guests at the hotel, proactively booking boat transfers for us and catering to every request. The lunch we had on the beautiful terrace by the pool was our favorite of all the meals we had in Capri and the Amalfi Coast during our trip. There is no menu, just fresh fish caught that day and the most incredible spaghetti with clams and an array of antipasti and pastas. The waiters were incredibly nice and the setting made it all the more special. The hotel itself is decorated in classic Italian style - grand but cozy with modern touches and beautiful large bedrooms and bathrooms. Our room had a terrace overlooking the water and we are pretty sure they upgraded us as it was outside of high season. Book early because it's small and they do fill up. We highly recommend Hotel Scalinatella over their much larger sister hotel the Quisisana as it's much bigger and located in the center of town.

A few notes on Capri ---

We imagine the summer (July & August) would be insanely crowded, too hot and not nearly as enjoyable. Go in May, early June or September/early October when hotel rates are lower, the weather is perfect and there aren't nearly as many people visiting. A must do is seeing Capri from the water. Skip the Blue Grotto group boat tours that leave from Marina Grande and hire a private boat instead. We booked with Gianni's Boat and they were fantastic. It's a family company and they have all different options for the size of your party, hours, packages, etc. All of the other couples we met who had booked private boats though a travel agent paid almost double what we did. Paolo, Gianni's brother, took us around the entire island, skipping the Blue Grotto (it's 12 Euro to go in and super touristy) and instead taking us for swims in secret coves and caves while giving us a history of the island.

Definitely take the tram up to Capri town from Marina Grande when you arrive. A taxi is a ridiculous rip off as your hotel will come pick up your bags and the tram is 5 minutes to the top and very easy. The hotel does charge a baggage fee of 10 eur per bag.

Take a taxi or the bus to Anacapri and ride the chairlift to the top. The views are unmatched!

NB: my wife helped with this review hence why it's so much better written than my previous reviews.

Room Tip: Room 48 had a great deck and lovely views of the water.
