“Beautiful & Chintzy Hotel in a Fabulous Location”
Reviewed 29 April 2007

We only stayed one night on Capri and were relying on a friend of ours who booked the hotel and what a great choice. The hotel is run by a friendly Italian family who made us feel extremely welcome. The hotel has amazing tiled floors, guilt mirrors in the bathroom and is generally over the top chintzy - but it is great. The views over the coast are spectacular and worth the short walk from the centre of Capri.

Breakfast in the morning was simple continential but the views and sun trap terrace were worth paying the money for, would certainly stay here again.

My review may not be current since we stayed at the Villa Krupp 4 years ago. The hotel is a big old nice Italian villa off the beaten path. It is immaculate and airy and beautifully decorated with colorful Italian tile floors and bathrooms, brightly colored stucco walls and giltwood sconces and chandeliers. the lobby and the stairway to our room were gorgeous. In our room our bed was right infront of French doors that lead to a balcony overlooking the city and the water. We loved watching the stars at night from our bed. Our room was very simple (but ten times better than any room at the Holiday Inn). Our room had pretty white linens, a big beautiful white washed antique armoire, colorful tile floors, and a brand new Italian tiled bathroom. You will never experience anything like this in the U.S. for $92 a night. Granted there are many steps to climb to get to the hotel and there is no pool (which you kind of want in Capri but you pay a lot more at those hotels). Also the hotel isn't exactly in the middle of things but is was only about a 10 minute walk (and a gorgeous walk it was) to get to action. Breakfast in the morning was a typical Italian breakfast of croissants and Latte on the Veranda overlooking Augustus Garden and the water. It all depends on what you can afford. The great thing about Italy is that even a lot of the 1 star hotel and B&Bs on the Almalfi coast are beautiful, super clean, and charming to say the least (unlike the 1, 2, or even 3 star hotels in the U.S.).

We had a room with a great view (Euro 150 per night), but in all other respects the hotel was very disappointing and amateurishly run despite a good recommendation from Fodors. In summary: the staff were generally abrupt, verging on the rude; the bed was probably the most uncomfortable I experienced in my 3 weeks in Italy on this trip; the room was very basic - very sparsely furnished, with no television; the telephone system is primitive, with one line to the hotel and no ability to use calling cards; the airconditioning did not work; I was charged Euro 15 for porterage with no suitable explanation even though I had been quoted Euro 10 by the porter hiimself; prior to arrival I had been told that I could use Euro denominated AMEX travellers' cheques to pay the account but was told (as I was about to pay the account) that I could not do so. All in all unfortunately a very average experience. Not a hotel which I could recommend.

Villa Krupp is a small hotel in probably the best location on Capri... as long as you are fairly fit! Wherever you stay on this island, you will need to tackle a fair few hills in order to get anywhere, so that's no big deal - as long as you are expecting this.

From the hotel, it's easy to get to the most chic beach, (a stunning walk down to Marina Piccolo - mostlly rock bathing and pebble beach, but simply beautiful with vertical cliffs and great cafes - the ghost of Grace Kelly roams freely) 5 minutes to Capri Town's designer shopping and the famous town square, where you have to do some people watching and sip a drink or two once the day trippers have gone).

In fact this hotel is ideal for everything, as long as you are not expecting Holiday Inn type accommodation (see a previous review). It is small, characterful and blessedly Italian! Go for it. Stay away from the Dock and main town square until 4pm and Capri Town is, along with Oia, in Santorini, one of the most magical island villages I have visited. Villa Krupp is simple, stylish (in an old fashioned way - if you're looking for minimalist, go elsewhere) and in character with the island.

One important point... the rooms at the front of the hotel have the best view in Capri... the view from the side are ordinary, and if you are expecting to spend any time relaxing on your balcony at the hotel, this will make a great difference to your holiday.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Villa Krupp at the beginning of October, after reading Fodor’s user reviews. The place was acceptable , however you cannot consider it an hotel, but more likely a stylish Italian Pension. The location was central but very uncomfortable because it’s just above a small park called Augustus’s Gardens where every night, going back from dinner, we used to found many young people coming and going. One night one of them had also the gut to ask us if we were looking for “something” . That was a very funny atmosphere.
It is better if you stay away and climb fast the 150 steps to the hotel, a very hard thing to do if you have problems with a knee like me.
The hotel’s view is nice and the room clean enough but there is no air conditioning, not that we needed it a lot during our stay, but in the summer it must have been terribly hot.
Altogether the Villa Krupp was not too bad, but is more suitable for young people with low budget, not for regular people like Rachel and me.

I spent five days in Capri in late September 2003 and loved every minute of it. The Island is beautiful and secure. We stayed at Villa Krupp and we would return any time. I don't think there is a better view and the people at the Villa are very very helpfull , the place is spotless the price is unbelievable(starts at 115 euros a night breakfast included!!!) but there are a lot of steps to reach the Villa that is up on the top of a hill, but it is worth every step to reach that view! There are only 12 rooms so you have to reserve ahead to get a room with sea view balcony (a little more expensive with the seaview), we reserved in early May and it was already too late for the end September...Armando will take care of everything for you: luggage, tickets for the ferry etc...Enjoy, everybody should at least go to Capri once!I don't think there is anything on Earth closer to Paradise!
