“Clean rooms, nice staff, unique hotel”
Reviewed 20 January 2014

I arrived from the airport with a taxi and was a bit shocked at the entrance to this hotel. Very poor first impression with a tiny, dirty, unlit lift taking me up to the reception. But the hotel itself is quite cool, feels like you are sleeping in a piece of history. Ladies working there were all very kind and tried to help with my issues (wi-fi, wi-fi and again wi-fi). If I needed any information they would help. My room was small but very clean. TV did not work but I didn't care about it. I liked the breakfast. The main restaurant is very attractive but needs some TLC. There was some serious mold on the ceiling (note if you have alergies or you suffer from asthma).

Location - close to everything. Lots of young crown around the hotel.

The only reason why I am not giving 5 out of 5 is the internet. The wi-fi did not work in my room throughout my entire stay. It did work around the reception and restaurant.

Pros: central location, clean rooms, nice staff
Cons: mold on the restaurant's ceiling, internet/wi-fi unavailable in my room and one more room I tried.

Great location and unexpected luxury once you get out of lift. Definitely worth it. Great breakfast in a fantastic room and staff, even gave us a contact card in case we needed anything while out and about. Taxi left us at the door even though it was a tiny lane. In the old city and walking distance to everything. Highly recommend the excursion to the Naples underground aqueducts. Surprised to find an Italian, Greek Scottish guide! A great laugh.
Would stay here again for sure.

We stayed at the Decumani Hotel de Charme on the last night of our 40th wedding anniversary trip to Italy this past November. It was all that I expected based on the reviews that I had seen on Tripadvisor. The hotel is in a renovated palazzo that once was the home of the bishop of Naples.

The hotel is very clean in an otherwise filthy city. The staff were very helpful. They suggested Gino Sorbillo for pizza and arranged a taxi for us to the airport at a fixed rate on the morning of our departure. The breakfast room is stunning and the selection was very good.

The hotel is located in the historic district near the university. The area is filled with pizza places, shops and restaurants. We stayed on a Friday night and it was a very vibrant area. We felt safe as we walked around the streets and alleys near the hotel and that is more than I can say about most of Naples. The Decumani Hotel de Charme was a great place to stay in the Decumani neighborhood, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise from what I expected of this area.

We stayed here for 4 nights and were really impressed. The staff were very helpful and gave good advice apart from one restaurant recommendation. Find a later review from me on this point.
Many people talk about the grubby entrance but really folks get over it, once you're in the hotel it is fine and it is after all in the middle of a very old city. I don't suppose these guys managed to get their limo near enough.
Another talking point is the room in which guests have breakfast, it is magnificent as is the buffet breakfast which is only lacking a cooked option.
Our room was a family room which meant it was on split levels, with us parents up on the mezzanine. The room and en-suite were good.
We left at 5.30am and the staff went out of their way to give us a coffee before we left which we didn't really expect. When I come back to Naples I'll be staying here.

In many ways, the Decumani Hotel de Charme encapsulates everything that's great about Naples.

Arriving at the hotel by taxi, having been driven through a myriad of vibrant backstreets by a driver who didn't seem to know what we were talking about, my wife and I squeezed into the old beat-down elevator which you takes you up to the hotel lobby. It's an inauspicious start to anyone's stay, but when you emerge from that cramped space, the aged beauty of this grand old palazzo immediately make an impression on you.

The rooms are simply and tastefully furnished with antique cabinets, wardrobes and bedsteads, which continues the themes of history and the notable legacy of the Sfroza family.

The definite star attraction of the hotel interior is the breakfast room: a wonderfully opulent hall adorned with golden stuccoes and mirrors. The breakfast itself is less impressive, but perfectly adequate for grabbing a quick bite prior to exploring the historic pathways surrounding the building and its vicinity.

The hotel's location could not be better - situated right in the heart of the old town and a stones throw away from the Via Tribulani, Museo Capella Sansevero & Napoli Sotterranea tours. Walking around the streets, you get a real sense of a city with unbelievable history - one which has been built on top of itself so many times that visual elements from different eras and present day sit alongside each other in everyday life.

The staff at the hotel are extremely friendly and accommodating, which we found to be true of Neopolitan people in general.

I highly recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of exploring Naples - we had a terrific stay.

We went for a long weekend break to Naples on a flight + hotel deal through BA. We selected the Decumani Hotel de Charme based on its history and its location.

And we were well rewarded. This is a fantastic hotel in a renovated palazzo right in the centre of historic Naples, within walking distance of the key sites.
The staff were excellent and provided exceptional service. They were a better information source than the local tourist offices. Though there was PC terminal available for residents to do their own research, but it was quicker to ask the reception who provided copies of up to date train and bus schedules.

Fantastic breakfast in a glorious salon that reflected the faded glory of the palazzo.
Mini-bar - Very reasonably priced
No coffee/tea facilities in the room, but it was available through reception.

The only minor criticism was the WiFi in the bedrooms. It was erratic, but sufficient to catch up on messages. A PC terminal was available in the common area if you needed better connectivity.

We highly recommend this hotel. Very tempted to travel to Naples again!

We stayed at this hotel just before Christmas 2013. We were nervous when the taxi dropped us off as the hotel is not obvious. We shouldn't have been. The staff were fabulous. Great fun, warm and full of Christmas spirit. The dining room/salon is really stunning. Breakfast was relaxed - good coffee served by a lovely italian lady who sang quietly to herself as she worked. We were very happy here. If you are a piano player then the grand piano in the salon is another joy.
We had booked a deluxe room which unfortunately wasn't available but our standard room was good with a wonderfully high ceiling. We had a no quibble refund.
Our teenage daughters were as delighted as we were this hotel as it is very close to all the attractions and restaurants. We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: If standard room as for high ceiling

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We are glad to give you the warmest welcome as our guests into Palazzo Sisto Riario Sforza. Here, in the heart of Naples old town within inches of Santa Chiara Church with its Cloister, the Veiled Christ and Via San Gregorio Armeno was born, in 2008, our Hotel. The Decumani Hotel de Charme was originally built during the 17th century and belonged to Sisto Riario Sforza, the last Archbishop of Naples in the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies of which Naples was the capital. In 2008 we embarked on a major refurbishment programme for the second floor, where the Hotel is placed. The hotel has now been fully restored and equipping with all the modern conveniences our guests expect. A wide lounge, decorated with golden stuccoes and mirrors, testifies the illustrious past of this residence. All of our 22 bedrooms are fully air-conditioned and feature the following: soundproof windows, flat screen Television with international channels, safe, minibar, direct dial telephone and hairdryer. The Decumani Hotel de Charme is located in the Decumani, in the heart of the old town originally a Greek "polis" and then a Roman "urbs", an area wich represents with its squares, streets and alleys, a unique historical, cultural and artistic heritage, as it is testified by the acknowledgment of Unesco, which in 1995 declared the historic centre of Naples " the biggest open-air museum in the world". ... more   less
