“Charming Neapolitan hosts create an experience to remember”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

In mid September, 2013, we stayed almost a week at the B and B Maria Mare operated by Maria and Enzo. The B and B is a very large apartment located up two flights of stairs in the old part of Naples. The side street it is on runs into a street that comprises an old and busy market area of Naples. The street also runs off the main commercial street and is close to the new metro with stations decorated by artists from around the world, the Piazza Dante, Piazza Bellini, the Archeological Museum and sites of the Centro Storico. Although Naples has a lot of traffic and can be noisy, the B and B is quiet.

We pre-arranged the cost of our cab from the airport within the price range suggested by Maria. Although our young cab driver had trouble finding the place, he did not try to charge us extra. (The B and B is around the corner from a church with the same name as the street the B and B is on and from the wonderful Gelateria Paradiso.) When our driver let us off, we saw Enzo on the street outside the B and B waving to welcome us.

Enzo is a retired university professor and his wife, Maria is a retired bank employee. They live around the corner from the B and B and at least one of them or their son, Giovanni came every morning to make breakfast. They are very knowledgeable about their city and made valuable suggestions for our stay in Naples. The B and B has a good selection of guide books and maps for the use of the guests.

Our room was quiet and separate from other rooms. It was not fancy but it was comfortable and had everything we needed: ensuite bathroom and lots of closet space. We had a traditional two door window with Juliette balcony. We had access to the rest of the B and B including the kitchen, dining room and living room and we could have brought in our dinner and eaten it there, if we had chosen to do that. We could help ourselves to tea or coffee at any time we were there.

Enzo and Maria made our visit to Naples more than just a tourist visit to the sites but a real taste of the way that Neapolitans live. We looked forward to their company at breakfast every morning and to the wonderful and generous food (juice, prosciutto, two or three kinds of cheeses, bread, Maria’s own home made marmelada and pastry and also locally bought traditional Neapolitan pastries including my favourite, sfogiatella.) They made us as much espresso as we could drink (with hot milk the way we like it).

We will especially remember our conversations with Enzo and Maria and their son, Giovanni (also a university professor) regarding Naples, Italy, politics, history and life in general. It was a treat for us to be the guests of this charming couple and to see how a family in Naples lives in the Centro Storico.

Room Tip: We had the first room after you enter which is separate from the other rooms and is more private.

We followed the excellent reviews for this B&B and were not disappointed. We spent 2 days in Naples on our way to Sorrento and could happily have spent longer. The B&B is in a great location off Via Toledo and very handy for the old town. We didn't really get out of that neihbourhood, there was so much of interest there. Don't be put off by Naples' reputation. It's worth a visit - take sensible precautions for personal safey and ignore the fact that it's a bit scruffy.
The B&B, is very handy for everything you want (at least what we wanted). It's up a little alley (like many in Naples) off via Toledo. The street is easy enough to find, though you might need to look carefully to get the right door. It is up two flights of stairs, so be prepared if you have heavy luggage. Enzo gave us a lift with ours. The advantage of being so high is that it is rather peaceful up there (apart from the constant background of scooters that are everywhere). As others have said, the flat is very clean and bright. The kitchen is well stocked. Maria and Enzo are perfect hosts, extremely kind and helpful, with plenty of advice on where to eat, things to see etc. Enzo provides ample breakfast and Maria's home-made jams and pickles are delicious. I can't think that there's a better place to stay in Naples, unless you really want a pool and a spa. We've experienced some pretty good B&B accommodation in France and Scotland, and this is up there among the best of them. Go there. (And eat at least once in Nennella - maybe not if you're a gourmet, but if you like atmosphere it's worth it. Get there early; a mob accummulates later waiting for tables.)

Room Tip: The rooms are all good (Maria gave us a tour). There's even a small appartment within the appar...

We had a fabulous time staying here on our trip to Naples. Naples is a much under-rated city in our opinion. This B&B is in a very good location for exploring the old town and the main shopping areas of Naples. It's on a back street in a charming area of the city very close to the main tourist sights and near several metro stations, but just far enough away to make it feel as though you are experiencing real Napolitan life. The entrance is slightly tricky to find and doesn't give the best first impression (like many parts of the city), but once you are inside the rooms and communal areas are fabulous! To find it go along via Toledo until you get to the San Nicola a la Carita church, then go down the tiny little side street on it's right side. Maria and her husband we're some of the most friendly and generous people we've ever met. Breakfast was amazing, with freshly baked bread and pastries and freshly squeezed orange juice every day. Maria's homemade lemon marmalade and lemoncello were delicious! We would definitely recommend staying here if you're in Naples!

Naples was an amazing experience made even more extraordinary by the wonderful accommodation. Enzo and Maria are perfect hosts and the B&B is truly a fantastic place where to stay, right in the middle of Naples extremely clean and comfortable. Breakfast was perfect traditional and delicious, words cannot explain how helpful and friendly both Enzo and Maria are, we hope one day to be back in Naples and if we do this is where we will stay again no doubt.
Not to miss is a dinner @ Nennella 5 minutes walk from the B&B

Room Tip: All rooms are great, air conditioning all throughout

You'll feel like you are visiting your favourite Italian relatives when you stay at Maria Mari.

It's in a real Napoli neighbourhood, and a little tricky to find (the neighbours will point it out to you if you look uncertain). But any misgivings you have will evaporate once you make your way upstairs and step inside. The apartment (which we had to ourselves the whole time) is quiet, clean, bright and cheerful. It is also within walking distance to everything you'll want to see in Naples.

To top it all off, Maria and Vincenzo are two of the most considerate, friendly and charming hosts we've ever stayed with. Highest recommendation!

For the second time I spent some days at this lovely b&b in february 2013. This time I travelled with my family. The b&b is located in a vibrant area. It is just one minute from the main shopping street, Via Toledo, but as it lies in a small alley there is no noise from the road. Just when you walk to the other side you are in the middle of Pignasecca, a lively small market area. There is a taxi stand two minutes away and the cable car to the Vomero area from where you get a breathtaking view of Naples is just three minutes from the b&b. Just in 5 minutes you are in the historic centre, the Spaccanapoli. The next metro station is only 5 minutes away. There are plenty of lovely restaurants nearby with traditional neapolitan food and wine.
But the best part is the b&b itself. It is spotlessly clean with a very nice dining room, where a true neapolitan breakfast is served. Maria and Vincenzo make you feel very much at home. We are already planning our next trip to Naples and will definitely stay again in this marvel of a b&b.

Maria, Vincenzo and Giovanni were excellent hosts. Giovanni went out of his way to ensure we arrived safely at Maria Mari and was very helpful with our luggage. Upon arrival Maria and Giovanni showed a lot of interest in our trip, to date, and asked if they could help us in further planning our stay in Naples. They had maps to give us directions and great suggestions for local restaurants and attractions.
Maria Mari is very centrally located and within walkin distance to many landmarks and attractions. The bed and room was clean and comfortable and had a private bath in our room. The breakfasts were superb with Maria's homemade cakes, lemon marmalade, and excellent coffee. Maria always ensured that there were a variety of snacks available for us and even gave us a bottle of wine. We were given full access to all amenities including laundry complete with typical Naploi clothes line!
When Giovanni and Maria found out we were interested in seeing the Amalfi Coast they suggested that we should hire a driver, and on very short notice were able to find us one. Salvadore chauffered us around Amalfi for the entire day, occasionally stopping and taking our picture in picturesque locations, and ensuring our last day in Naples (and Italy) was relaxing. If you are thinking of visiting the Amalfi Coast from Naples this is a highly recommended way to do so. Thank you Salvadore! In fact, we had Salvadore drive us to the airport the next morning to avoid the public transit.
On our last morning in Naples, Maria personally took us on a walking tour to a local church, Santa Maria Dell' Aiuto, before we met our driver. When we left we truly felt as though we were leaving family. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay in Naples!
