Owner description: The Teatro di San Carlo was designed by the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale for the monarch since Charles wanted a new and larger theatre for Naples to replace the old and dilapidated Teatro San Bartolomeo of 1621. On 12 February 1816 the San Carlo was destroyed by fire. The Theatre was re-designed by the architect Antonio Niccolini and rebuilt within ten months on order of King Ferdinand IV. In 1845 there was additional refurbishment and, by 1854, the theatre's interior appearance changed to the now-traditional red and gold. Now carefully restored to its former splendour, the San Carlo is the oldest working theatre in Europe.

“Teatro San Carlo Naples”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

Fantastic! We saw Pagliacci on impulse and were thrilled. The opera house is beautiful and we felt very special sitting in our own box like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman! We were on the fifth floor but still had a perfect view.
We had drinks and nibbles before the show in the cafe, which we would highly recommend doing. It was not overly expensive - €12 for 2 glasses of wine and a lovely selection of nuts, savoury pizzas and pastries.
Dress up, take your camera and enjoy, but don't worry, people were dressed in smart and smart casual even smart jeans.
Only regret after reading the reviews is that we didn't go on the tour- another time.

“Great Opera”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

We bought tickets to the opera here spontaneously. The opera was imaginative and fun. What we liked the best was that we had our own box to view the opera.

“Naples Opera House”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Guided tour only. Part of the artecard (purchased at the train station upon arrival). Still in use today. Very informative tour. The tour ends in the Opera Café so save some room for some tasty food.
