“old fashioned luxury”
Reviewed 4 July 2013

This was our third visit to Naples and to the magnificent Grand Hotel Vesuvio. As members of LHW's Leaders Club, we were treated to an upgrade-- this time it was a beautiful suite with sea views from both the living room and bedroom.
Service is old fashioned and the hotel offers a wonderful respite from the confusion that characterizes Naples.
The breakfast buffet is memorable and many of the local specialties are offered-- including homemade orange marmalade and their version of chocolate-hazelnut spread.
The street in front of the hotel has been turned into a pedestrian zone. The walk from the hotel to the city center doesn't take much more than 10 minutes. Perfect location if you are staying for a couple days.

On our one night stay before we proceeded our drive to the Amalfi coast. Service staff were pleasant and professional, did not give us a feeling that "only tips will get you" attitude. Room was big and provided all essentials in an old italien style setting. Excellent location.

I just got back from a one night stay -

Pros -
- Incredible View.
- Incredible Location. 100 meters walk and you are in the main square, walk out the front door and the road along the water is closed for walkers, bikers, joggers, etc.
- Very historic.
- Clean rooms.
- Front desk employees.

- Cons -
- Very expensive... like 4 Euro for an espresso that is 50 cents outside the hotel.
- Extra charges for everything... 10 Euros to use the gym... 15 Euros if you want the Gym + Sauna.... 10 Euro for internet... the list goes on...REALLY? In a 5-Star hotel?
- Hard Beds.
- Burnt Yellow Decor inside the rooms... yeah it looks old... very old...
- Breakfast: Hot food is served in chaffing dishes without heaters so the eggs, bacon, etc. were all cold. Good choice of breads though... Only eat there if it is included in you rate.

Bottom line: Unless you REALLY want to stay/pay for a VERY old and HISTORIC hotel then I don't think it is worth the expense...

Terrific junior suite on the 7th floor with a balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples. The room had black out curtains that allowed us to sleep, a real plus when you first arrive. This was 5 star in every aspect from the moment you entered to when you departed. The street in front has been turned into a walking, biking and sightseeing avenue. The location of the island directly across from the hotel with great little restaurants open almost all day and night was delightful. The beautiful harbor covered in all types of boats was a photographers delight. We stayed four nights and would go back.

This hotel was is one of two hotels fronting Naples' harbour. We were told that the Vesuvio was superior to its next door neighbour which actually looks grander than the Vesuvio from the outside. We spent just one night there, as we were eager to set off for the Amalfi Coast.
What I like about the establishment is its slightly faded, understated air and look, especially in the various spacious sitting rooms. On the other hand, the bar-restaurant off the arrival hall looks bright and recently redone, perhaps thanks to the flooding Neapolitan light from the glinting sea. Its windows look directly at the old watch-castle guarding the port. Our room was very comfortable, with the kind of attention to detail that one expects from a hotel which is part of the Leading Hotels of the World network, ie, crisp white sheets, generous soft pillows, fluffy bathrobes and bath linen, excellent wall fabric, capacious closets, arm chairs in which one could sit to read for hours, etc.
The lobby bar-restaurant provided an unexpectedly delicious light light, with a bar-tender/waiter who provided commendable attentive and friendly service.
A slight observation about the hotel which detracts nothing from my satisfaction : the courteous but impersonal tone taken by the concierge and counter staff. I found this widespread in the other 5-star places we patronised, including the Cesar Augustus in Capri.

Thankfully only stayed here one night - arrived late from an evening flight so its location was convenient for us as we only spent one night here before crossing to capri. The room we booked was supposed to be a superior double - it was disappointing - it was small covered from head to toe in green fabric (probably silk) but created a very oppressive feeling the curtains were pulled on our arrival - needless to say they were concealing an ugly view - not such a problem as we were only here to sleep but clearly the hotel wasn't full so why put people in inferior rooms needlessly ??

Breakfast was served in an elegant bright room and the food was good - the restaurant on the top floor looked wonderful but was full when we arrived so didn't get a chance to eat there sadly. The public rooms of this hotel are nice and the location is good but the thing that really made me mad was that they knew we were only staying for one night and leaving the next morning via hydrofoil to capri (because they gave us a timetable and we had chatted to them about it) so on our departure when they booked us a taxi to take us to the port - this is where their 5 star service failed us was the fact that all the hydrofoils for that day had been cancelled due to the 'rough sea' - why didn't they know this - surely this was some vitally important information which they should have relayed to their guests - this totally spoiled our first day on holiday - we had to wait 4 hours for the next ferry to capri - it was a total bun fight getting on - not how we envisaged our romantic trip over to the island of capri - I feel the hotel should have relayed this information to us or at least put a notice up in their reception area informing guests of the situation regarding crossing to capri ! D
Disappointing start thanks to the hotel

Beautiful classic hotel on the seafront of Naples overlooking "Castello dell'Ovo".
5 star service, elegant surroundings, all of the staff very helpful and courteous, from the bellboy to the front desk to the waiters.
Great buffet breakfast with a great view. The Caruso Restaurant on the 9th floor is highly recommended - excellent food and a breathtaking view over the bay of Naples. Pricey but the view alone is worth it. The rooms are a bit dated but very spacious with every comfort. The beds need to be updated - the matresses are far too soft.
