Naples, unfortunately, is a third world city. Buildings crumbling, garbage not collected, 1/3 of the city is unemployed. However, the Excelsior is an oasis in the city of naples. The rooms were create (over looking the bay and Mt. Vesuvius) and the breakfast was absolutely fantastic. The excelsior is a starwood property so it's possible to get / use points. The location was about a 11.5 euro taxi trip from the central train station. The city is very accessible by walking and the hotel is located very near the historic center. While some may fine the city of naples "challenging", the hotel was great and the city of naples also has great food - the pizza is fantastic and inexpensive, the coffee is rich and strong but not harsh or bitter, and the pastries and seafood are excellent. Would highly recommend a stay at this hotel. There is a fitness center but it is located next door and costs. Who really needs a fitness center when one can explore the city of naples on foot. lots of hills to climb and places to see.

Naples in the summer is sweltering and crowded. Had we not stayed at the Excelsior, I think we may have had a very different view of Naples.

The hotel has a lovely old world charm, with lots of character. We especially liked the huge staircase in the centre of the hotel. Our room on the fifth floor had a lovely terrace, which faced Capri and if we looked to the left we could see Mt Vesuvius. Below, we had a fantastic view of the seafront and could soak up the atmosphere.

Unfortunately the rooftop restaurant was closed for a wedding on the only night we could eat dinner there but we did manage a peek around the day before. The views are stunning and I would highly recommend splurging on dinner there.

Although there is a charge for internet access, it isn't as bad as some European hotels. If you were staying 3 + nights, the cost was 30 euros. If you are a platinum Starwood member the access is free. (However, the breakfast is not free for platinum members, as it is in some other properties, which is unfortunate since the cost of the breakfast is 30 euros p/p if it is not included in your room price!).

This is one of the most elegant hotels, I have stayed in and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay but be sure that you get a room with a terrace and facing the seafront. andmake sure you get the down filled pillow, otherwise you will wake up with a stiff neck!

Finally, beware that the restaurants across the road in the fortress area charge considerably more because of the location, the food isn't that good and the service is sloppy. We went around the corner from the hotel---go out the front door, turn left, then left (around the corner) and you will find 2 restaurants side by side and a small cafe. The first one is more of a pizza place for lunch, the middle one (with the pink chairs) does a great chateaubriand, or steak and the last place (cafe) is a great place to go for coffee and a pastry for breakfast----around 10 euros for 2 if you sit outside, less if you stand inside.

We stayed for 4 days and loved this hotel. Our room rate included breakfast on the terrace and it was the best way to start the day -- beautiful view of naples bay, delicious selection of items and wonderful service. I am also a frequent business traveler who stays in hotels for over 30 nights every year ... this is a wonderful hotel.

location is great bit it's not what you would expect if seen the site, know it's a starwood hotel. It's a stylish old hotel but bit dusty old. not really friendly staff, internet you have to pay extra, 3 euro for half a hour and need a code for that. They would bring to my room, after 15 minutes called again and they forgotten . No swimmingpool , not really what i was hoping for. Stay over 200 nights a year in hotels but would not go here again....

Room Tip: ask room with seaview

We stayed at the Hotel Excelsior for one night prior to heading to Positano for a week. I chose it because of other reviews that said that the neighborhood was one of the safer ones in Naples (which seems accurate after our walk through town). We had two rooms at 200 euros each ~ though ours was quite larger than our childrens connecting room for the same price. The rooms were old world elegance and quite lovely but the best part was the terrace facing the bay and a lovely view of Mt. Vesuvius which was perfect for reading or catching up on some emails. The larger room was room 520.
The lobby is nice (but is a little tired looking) ... again old world elegance. We arrived early from a long flight and the reception desk comped our coffee at the bar while we waited for our rooms which was very thoughtful. They also made our reservation for dinner at a restaurant we had been recommended called Ciro Mergellina ~ delicious Branzino in acqua pazza!

Room Tip: Spring for the seaview room and request a terrace if possible

The Excelsior is an excellent hotel, with great service in a wonderful location.
I am a Starwood platinum member and was therefore upgraded to a junior suite. The check in was smooth and quick and the receptionist came up with us to show us the room. Although it was on the first floor, we had little noise from the street. Room was nice, clean and airy. View was very nice unto the sea and the Castel dell'Ovo. Washroom was comfortable and fairly big. The only problem there was inconsistent hot water supply.
The internet service offered free of charge to platinum members is not great. Wifi reception was inconsistent and you constantly have to log in again after shutting down the computer. It seems however this is pretty constant in Italy.
Breakfast was included and served on the seventh floor terrace with view over the bay and the Castel. Offerings were varied and very good.
Staff in the hotel were all very helpful for information about the city and the area around Naples. Service was quick, efficient and polite.
Location of the hotel is great; it is within minutes of Imperial Naples and old Naples and very close to the port where boats can be boarded for Capri or Ischia. The area, particularly via Partenope along the sea, is safe and has plenty of decent restaurants. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and I would happily visit again.
