My husband and I were traveling through Italy on our honeymoon. We arrived into the Naples train station after reading mixed reviews on the city, and well-aware that we needed to pay attention to our bags and our pockets, and quickly slipped into a taxi without any problems. Then we started driving through the city. We could not have been remotely prepared for what we were about to see. I thought our train had accidentally let us off in a 3rd world country. We've traveled extensively in Italy (and the rest of the world), and never have I seen anything like it. Graffiti EVERYWHERE, trash all over the streets, iron bars on windows, everything looked closed down with those huge metal doors drawn down over them (and more graffiti). The worst parts of the worst US cities look nice in comparison. The taxi drivers drive worse than in most cities, as well. Wear a seatbelt. Also, as a warning to pedestrians, red lights do NOT mean stop in Naples apparently. Cross only with locals. It feels like a game of frogger darting across lanes of traffic that never seem to stop. After we were deposited at the waterfront infront of our hotel, we were very relieved (but of course got cheated by our taxi driver who we later found out overcharged us by a lot--seems to be a trend in all of Italy to be honest). The hotel itself is very nice. It was rather beautiful inside (we were almost surprised), and as I'm a gold member who travels a lot with starwood for work, they upgraded us to a very nice floor with an AMAZING view of Vesuvius and the harbor. This is the one thing that kept us happy in Naples (I will say the bed was very very hard, though). The bathroom was very very nice, the balcony had an amazing view that we enjoyed, and even the hallway was very nice (we noticed when the elevator stopped at another floor that they were not even remotely as nice as the one we were put on). As we were staying completely for free with the nights and weekends promotion they were having, we were even happier. We decided to venture out into the city, but got a taxi to the archaelogical museum (they definitely overcharge for admission here, but it has a lot of Pompeii's art and we were going there next so wanted to see it) and then walked down to a few other sites (but we definitely never felt very safe). It's amazing, though, to walk past all this horrible graffiti and trash, open a non-descript door to a church, and walk in to find amazing marble ceilings and breathtaking statues. Naples also seems to be a popular place for cruise ships to stop for the day. After our site-seeing, we returned to the waterfront and never left. It felt a bit safer there, (area immediately around the hotel) but we never ventured out after dark. We were supposed to stay back in Naples one night before leaving and ended up re-routing ourselves to Sorrento and just taking the bus to the Naples airport from there. I would recommend this hotel, but I would not recommend Naples.
