Owner description: This museum has all of the interesting finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, both doomed cities after the violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD.

Forget the lack of organization by the museum staff, they - for a good reason or not - may be complaining of something, admire the marvellous pieces. Even if some rooms are closed, allegedly by the lack of personnal, it will be still certainly a lot to see. A singular museum with one of the best collections of Roman antiques.

The main attractions of the museum are the Pompeii exhibits and I was very much looking forward to seeing these. Deliberately didn't go to see them in London as we knew we would be in Naples in June. So you can imagine it was pretty disappointing to find that they are now in Los Angeles! Are they ever in Naples? The Farnese sculptures were magnificent and worth seeing on their own but we did spend quite a long time searching for the Pompeii stuff. Obviously there still are some exhibits from Pompeii but not the major ones. Even the Egyptian galleries were closed. Very nice shop.

Apart from the Farnese Collection which was brought over from Rome, this museum was purpose built to house the many artifacts and frescoes discovered at Pompeii and Herculanaeum. Therefore, if one wants to understand these two Roman cities, a visit to this museum is a must!

Some must-see pieces for fans of art and archaeology. Only galleries open when we were there were the Farnese marbles, most of the Pompei frescoes and artefacts, the villa of the papyrus artefacts, the mosaics, and the 'secret cabinet' (door through the mosaics collection).

As usual for Italy not much in the way of labelling or information - we just read up on the famous stuff beforehand. There were audio-guides but we didn't use. There is a nice little gift shop, and baggage check available for larger bags only.

There's something for everyone here. I particularly liked the marble statues and the miniature model of pompei. You can easily spend a couple of hours here
