We did not hike to the top of Vesuvius, but everywhere you turned there was Mount Vesuvius, a perfect background to your pictures, whether in Pompeii or Napoli or out on the ferry.

“Good views on a clear day”
Reviewed 18 June 2012

We went up the back route via 4x4s which was great fun, average time of the group for the walk up was 30mins and it was relatively easy going. According to our tour leader the back route is much prettier than the normal route as we were surrounded by wild flowers. The guide at the top was very knowledgeable and left us plenty of time to wander round the rim and have a look.... worth the effort!.

“Amazing views but a long hike.”
Reviewed 17 June 2012

We visited in early June on a sunny day. We drove our own car to the car park near the ticket entrance. There were plenty of spaces as most people seem to arrive by tour bus. The road is very twisty and we had to watch out for large vehicles. The views of the bay are wonderful on the way up. The car park cost 2.50 euros and the tickets a further 8 euros each.

It was a long hard walk to the crater on quite a steep path made of cinders. It is very dusty and loose under foot. There is no shade and a bottle of water is a must. It is 1 km to the start of the crater and a further 800m to the far side. There is a small shop at the start of the crater where you can buy extra water, ice cream and postcards.

Only thing left to do after that is climb back down.

“Not for those who have weak knees”
Reviewed 17 June 2012

I visited as part of an excursion from the Norwegian Epic. We took a bus up the first part; a winding road that offers some great views...and a lot of broken down abandoned businesses. If you drive up, go slow and be sure to honk as you turn the corner because it is often narrow and blind. At the entry point, they have a ticket office covered with graffiti that offers a few porta-potties (I pity the poor tourist who needs a sit-down in the toilet there). The hike from there isn't easy. I'm 51 and in fairly decent shape and had to stop a few times. The trail has a lot of loose dirt...don't wear sandals or your feet will end up filthy. You'll need some good sturdy enclosed walking shoes. Our cruise company hired a "geologic guide" near the top who was very funny and informative; he made the tour a lot more interesting. You can buy a cold bottle of water up there for 1.50 Euro. It's really cool to look down into the crater from the top. You can tip the walking stick guy whatever you want...I gave him .50 for two sticks.

“Take your time, its definitely worth it!”
Reviewed 16 June 2012

The climb is steep (about 1 in 5) and over loose gravel but by no means impossible. Wear good, enclosed shoes, take a bottle of water and take advantage of the stout walking canes available at the car park. You will be rewarded with incredible views and a real understanding of how many people now live in the shadow of this live volcano. One more thing, the facilities are 'portacabins' so its worth using them early in the day!
