Royal Continental Hotel
Ranked #42 of 185 Hotels in Naples
Reviewed 10 May 2011

Booked Royal Continental for location first, price second. Worked out great. Check in very efficient, spoke English & in room within 5 minutes. Paid extra for terrace. Terrace was larger than many hotel rooms we've stayed in. Well worth paying the extra. View spectacular. Looking out over Bay of Naples towards Capri & Castel del'Ovo. Room very clean & comfortable. Mini bar in room sparse & expensive. Breakfast was included in deal & we expected the usual continental brekkie but surprised with choice of some hot dishes and wonderful pastries, all very tasty & got us off to a nice start every morning. Location on the bay front suited us fine, short walk to restaurants all round area. Short walk to Piazza del Plebiscito, Palazzo Reale & main shopping areas.Staff all very friendly & maid very observant. My wife had her birthday during our stay & some cards were left on the table. On return that day there had been a delivery of a small posy of lillies & a card from the Management. Minor downsides - hotel seems to be very popular with seminars & conferences etc & businesses staying overnight. This results in busy breakfasts, timing has to be right, plenty food & room but lift problems getting down to dining room can take ages. Bar/lounge area - costly drinks & a bit soulless. Tourists - must be the first hotel to have no reading material in room for attractions, hotel group brochures etc, in fact no tourist info anywhere. Like its city, they want your business but don't really want you, if you know what I mean. One other gripe, although there are safes in the rooms, don't understand why maid leaves terrace door open after finishing cleaning, especially with the reputation that Naples gets. Gripes aside, both my wife & I thoroughly enjoyed our stay & if pushed to stay in Naples again would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra

We were to stay two nights at Hotel Continental at stop over in Naples, so we could see the sights in Pompeii. When we arrived after traveling all day on the train from Venice we were told that they no longer had our room for us that night and that we were to move to another hotel down the street, but to return the next day. Let's just say that they didn't exactly say this in a nice, apologetic way, but more of a snobby, very rude, we couldn't care less way. We dragged our bags down the street to the Santa Lucia who were friendly and even went as far as to upgrade our hotel room. We didn't return to the Hotel Continental for our booked second night since we were treated so rudely and were spending all day in Pompeii. Who wants to move hotels in the middle of a two-day stay? Well, as you can expect, the Hotel Contential refused to refund us for the second night of our stay.

I wouldn't recommend Naples at all (and yes, the hotel experience probably soured me). If stay there -- stay at the Santa Lucia. Otherwise, go to Sorrento!!

Stayed here fore one night on the way home after a week's holiday in Sorrento.
The hotel is in a good location on the sea front, within easy walking distance of Piazza Plebiscito, and 30 mins walk to the historical centre. The decor of the hotel is lovely - clean, smart, modern and well-equipped. Unfortunately, the staff all seem to have a corresponding air of arrogance - when we arrived with our backpacks were were sneered at by both the receptionists and bell-hop - and this continued for the duration of our stay. While local guests were welcomed with hand-shakes and smiles, we were very much 'looked down upon' by everyone from the breakfast staff to the concierge.

On a more positive note, the room was lovely - comfortable, well-equipped and spacious, with great views over the sea front. It is a shame therefore that it did not provide a good night's sleep; despite closing all of the doors, including the balcony doors and shutters, noise could still be heard from every direction - chairs scraping on the floor above, traffic beeping away incessantly all night, loud conversations until the wee small hours from the room next door, doors banging out in the corridor.
Breakfast was well-stocked and offered good choice, although don't bother with the milk - it had turned sour.
As for Naples itself, try not to be intimidated by what you may read before you go. Go there with an open mind, see what it has to see - stick to well-populated main streets and don't advertise your valuables, and you'll be fine. There's lots to see. We recommend the restaurants on the sea front - take a right out of the hotel lobby - for fantastic food at a cheap price, with good friendly service. Use taxis with caution - drivers are quick to rip you off.
Overall the Royal Continental is a nice building with all the comforts of a modern hotel, in a great location - but I wouldn't recommend it if you need to get an early night for an early flight.

This hotel is average in decor and ambiance, but the views over the Bay of Naples are very good. The staff was quite good and all spoke English. This Santa Lucia area is really the nices in Naples.

It has a feel of goodqualityness that we liked, staff were all great and location is fantastic.

We ate in the restaurant for dinner which wasn't good, likewise cooked breakfast was poor.

I think if you stay in Naples and expect home like luxury, it's a bit like going to the moon and expecting to find an M&S!

Probably wouldn't stay there again, but wouldn't avoid it.

We had a brilliant weekend, Naples is amazing and so unsanitised... fantastic. I sincerely hope it stays that way.

Located in great, safe place. A lot of restaurants around, coastline promenade just outside, nice walking tour.
The hotel itself is not that exiting. Clean spacious rooms, old appliances. Pillows are in very small size (even my cat has much bigger), felt like slipping without pillow at all. Big downside for a 4* hotel.
Ordered a sparkling vine on arrival, which, of course, hasn't been provided. Had to call reception. So, surprise for my wife wasn't surprise any more...
Breakfast food selection was very poor for this region, standard omelette with fried bacon.
Wi-Fi should be complimentary in 4* hotel.
All those downsides are slightly irritating, but we were trying to stay calm and ignore them. We just came to see a beautiful Napoli, and not focus on the hotel.
So, average hotel, more business than leisure.

Stayed at the Royal Continental for 4 nights. Great location near several restaurants and a reasonable walk to prime tourist attractions in Naples. Several issues warrant attention:
On checking in, the bellman to whom we were assigned pleasantly assisted with hauling our bags. When we asked if he could find us a bucket of ice, he told us we could go back downstairs to the bar and get some.
It was a warm week, and the air conditioning did not work adequately. Opening the sliding balcony door was not an option since the street noise was loud. The desk committed to fixing it but later explained that the local utility required the hotel to decrease its consumption after 11pm. We discussed this with the morning front desk manager who had a "who told you that?" look on his face. It was clearly BS.
On a positive note, the bar staff couldn't have been more helpful and pleasant (making sure I had plenty of ice, which I needed for an injured knee).
In summary, great bartenders, staff speaks good English, don't expect good AC in warm weather. Rooms are clean with very comfortable beds. Great breakfast.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Four stars for the Hotel Royal Continental, a hotel on the seafront promenade of Naples with a fascinating past, rebuilt in 1955 by Ferdinando Chiaromonte where once stood the Grand Hotel Royal des Etrangers . Today it is known as a structure of great prestige framed by the extraordinary beauty of the Bay of Naples. Large common areas , multiple meeting spaces , picturesque corners of relaxation, the Royal Continental sparkles elegantly with vintage charm thanks to the interiors designed by Gio Ponti , one of the greatest architects of the twentieth century. The furniture too was designed by him combined with designs by young architects of his choice . All 397 rooms, of which most have large windows and a balcony facing the breathtaking view of the Gulf, are spacious and very bright. On the Floor Museum Gio Ponti you can stay in one of the 24 rooms with wooden furnishings and fixtures designed specifically for the Hotel by Ponti. Suspended furniture, three-drawer chests with feet, and magazine racks and lamps in satin brass integrated into headboards from briar have made the history of Italian design. In stunning New York style, the Roof on the tenth floor, from which the beautiful view of the ancient Borgo Marinari and the legendary Castel dell'Ovo can be enjoyed, presents the one of a kind sea-water pool designed by Gio Ponti, published in 1954 on the cover of Domus. Guests are offered the solarium, outdoor bar, Fitness Center, massages booked in advance and two exclusive restaurants with spectacular panoramic views that stretch from the Vesuvius to the hill of Posillipo and the island of Capri. Breakfast served by the sea, in addition to the buffet which offers freshly baked pastries by Hotel Royal Continental, including oven fresh Neapolitan sfogliatelle, pastry horns. Location of reference for events and meetings, the Royal Continental is a well known Conference Center of primary importance in the national scene. Equipped with the most modern equipment and complimentary Wi-Fi, the Conference Center is characterized by its many meeting rooms with natural light and sea views. An exceptional location for large or small events thanks to its Auditorium setaing 530, its 16 Meeting rooms, 13 business suites and exhibition space, more than 200 sqm large.
