The Royal Continental Hotel is in a fantastic location, but that is really all that it has to offer. The decor looks very different to the photos posted on the various websites. "Retro" would be a kind term for rooms that are straight out of the '70s - think patterned sludge carpets, ripped upholstery, bin shells with no bin and beds that are like sleeping on a slap of rock. One of the key selling points of this hotel was the fact that it has a swimming pool. The only problem is that it is essentially only open at the weekend. The thing that became very clear very quickly is that the hotel prioritises its business customer over its leisure travellers. The swimming pool happens to be on the same level as where they hold their conferences, hence its closure in the week on the flimsiest of excuses. Ignore any review that says the hotel staff are helpful - it must have been written by a business traveller. The staff in reality are really very little help particularly with anything vaguely touristy, transport or food related - you are either brushed off with a shrug or a "it could have been worse!" if things haven't quite gone to plan! The staff also start setting up for the conference lunches about an hour before breakfast finishes, putting up screens and clearing away in a not so subtle hint for you to hurry up and get out. That said, the view from the breakfast room is spectacular.
In summary, it is a faded old fashioned hotel that prioritises local business customers (weekdays have company reception tables in the foyer), over the leisure traveller, with none of the advertised facilities available. This is compounded by the substandard service, meaning that despite its great location, it still doesn't feel more than a 2.5 to 3 star hotel.
