“The only promise it lived up to was its location.....”

The Royal Continental Hotel is in a fantastic location, but that is really all that it has to offer. The decor looks very different to the photos posted on the various websites. "Retro" would be a kind term for rooms that are straight out of the '70s - think patterned sludge carpets, ripped upholstery, bin shells with no bin and beds that are like sleeping on a slap of rock. One of the key selling points of this hotel was the fact that it has a swimming pool. The only problem is that it is essentially only open at the weekend. The thing that became very clear very quickly is that the hotel prioritises its business customer over its leisure travellers. The swimming pool happens to be on the same level as where they hold their conferences, hence its closure in the week on the flimsiest of excuses. Ignore any review that says the hotel staff are helpful - it must have been written by a business traveller. The staff in reality are really very little help particularly with anything vaguely touristy, transport or food related - you are either brushed off with a shrug or a "it could have been worse!" if things haven't quite gone to plan! The staff also start setting up for the conference lunches about an hour before breakfast finishes, putting up screens and clearing away in a not so subtle hint for you to hurry up and get out. That said, the view from the breakfast room is spectacular.
In summary, it is a faded old fashioned hotel that prioritises local business customers (weekdays have company reception tables in the foyer), over the leisure traveller, with none of the advertised facilities available. This is compounded by the substandard service, meaning that despite its great location, it still doesn't feel more than a 2.5 to 3 star hotel.

I am not sure who these people are that are writing pleasant reviews about this hotel. This is possible the worst hotel we have yet to stay in. The beds were like sleeping on the floor. The air conditioning did not work and we ended up sleeping on top of the covers sweating all night. The rooms are old and have a musty smell. When we voiced our dissaitisfaction there was no attempt to make this better. We checked out a day early due to the poor environment and were charged a $600.00 penalty for the 2 rooms.

We spent a couple of nights here as part of 2 week holiday with 9 year old to Italy - the location and the view from the room was spot on....sea view with small balcony. Good breakfast. Great choice of restaurants 2 minutes on the sea front. Walk into city centre at least 20 minutes.

Roof top pool was enjoyable - sea/salty water though but extortionate food/drink prices from the bar there. Fridge and air conditioning were not working well however and this coupled with soul - less atmosphere means we wouldnt particularly recommend overall.

The rooms are not enough fresh during the day but the worse is that they are very hot during the night. lt happend because in this hotel they keep very low the power of the central air-conditioning system during the day and they close it during the night (they close it for 5 hours but after that the system needs other 2 - 3 hours to return at the normal level in all the building). I verify that they decided to work in this way and that no one in the hotel has the power to open the central air-conditioning system on your request because they may need to open it for all the hotel. Simply, after a first night without sleep in a room that seems a kind of sauna they can't help you, they feel very sorry for you and they desire just to understand if you desire to change hotel or not.

only the view, but nothing else... 4 star hotel with 3 star value. Even though it has been renovated lately, especially the rooms don't have any warm atmosphere. Only nice thing is the view of the castel del Ovo, obviuously if you book a sea view room

After reading the reviews before I went to this hotel, I was very wary, but having come back, all I can say the people who wrote bad reviews MUST of been staying at another hotel !!!!!!
we had a room at the front so a fantastic view over the bay of naples, bed very comfy, great shower, air con good, breakfast a wide variety to choose from, all the staff very pleasant and helpful, I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting naples and the tour bus stop is right outside, what more could you want...... :)

We spent 5 nights at this hotel and encountered numerous problems, none of which were resolved by the staff!
We left the AirCon on full blast for the entire 5 days and nights, but the room was still boiling.
The minibar contained 6 miniature bottles of spirit with the seal broken. When informed, reception told us a "technician" would look into it.
We asked a few questions on how to get to different places, and each time we received a different answer - and they were all misleading!
The bed is very solid, not very comfortable.
On the positive side, the pool area is nice and had a nice member of staff attending it (bar/lifeguard). Also the location is great, on the seafront and close enough to port to get to the ferry.
Would not recommend the hotel, based purely on the attitude of the staff and the lack of service.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Four stars for the Hotel Royal Continental, a hotel on the seafront promenade of Naples with a fascinating past, rebuilt in 1955 by Ferdinando Chiaromonte where once stood the Grand Hotel Royal des Etrangers . Today it is known as a structure of great prestige framed by the extraordinary beauty of the Bay of Naples. Large common areas , multiple meeting spaces , picturesque corners of relaxation, the Royal Continental sparkles elegantly with vintage charm thanks to the interiors designed by Gio Ponti , one of the greatest architects of the twentieth century. The furniture too was designed by him combined with designs by young architects of his choice . All 397 rooms, of which most have large windows and a balcony facing the breathtaking view of the Gulf, are spacious and very bright. On the Floor Museum Gio Ponti you can stay in one of the 24 rooms with wooden furnishings and fixtures designed specifically for the Hotel by Ponti. Suspended furniture, three-drawer chests with feet, and magazine racks and lamps in satin brass integrated into headboards from briar have made the history of Italian design. In stunning New York style, the Roof on the tenth floor, from which the beautiful view of the ancient Borgo Marinari and the legendary Castel dell'Ovo can be enjoyed, presents the one of a kind sea-water pool designed by Gio Ponti, published in 1954 on the cover of Domus. Guests are offered the solarium, outdoor bar, Fitness Center, massages booked in advance and two exclusive restaurants with spectacular panoramic views that stretch from the Vesuvius to the hill of Posillipo and the island of Capri. Breakfast served by the sea, in addition to the buffet which offers freshly baked pastries by Hotel Royal Continental, including oven fresh Neapolitan sfogliatelle, pastry horns. Location of reference for events and meetings, the Royal Continental is a well known Conference Center of primary importance in the national scene. Equipped with the most modern equipment and complimentary Wi-Fi, the Conference Center is characterized by its many meeting rooms with natural light and sea views. An exceptional location for large or small events thanks to its Auditorium setaing 530, its 16 Meeting rooms, 13 business suites and exhibition space, more than 200 sqm large. Pets up to 10 kg are allowed with an extra cost of 20 euros per stay. Located in one of the liveliest and most dynamic areas of Naples, the Royal Continental is the ideal location for living and exploring the city, within walking distance from shopping streets and the main local attractions, 10 minutes walk from Piazza Plebiscito and the Royal Palace. Furthermore, it is a 7 minutes drive to the harbour for ferry connections, 10 minutes to the Central Station and 20 to the International Airport.
