“Charming in Great Location with Great Staff”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

We spent 3 nights at Chiaja Hotel in January 2014 and were very pleased with the staff and the location. The hotel is on a pedestrian way in the midst of the Historic District with great east of access to all key sites and restaurants. The building has the character of an old home with the warmth of a bed and breakfast. we asked for a room with light and got a great corner room with two windows. Depending on your personal requirements you may ask about an inner courtyard for quiet or the street for light and the liveliness of the streets. Breakfast is limited, but not an issue as it is down street from many wonderful cafes for the usual breakfast of Cafe and Coroneto. Every staff member we dealt with were wonderful, informed and extremely helpful. highly recommend for a great value in the historic center.

Room Tip: Corner room is lighter (but only a few) and would be noisier from street noise. Depends on time of...

The Chiaja is a delight. Center of it all location, unique configuration, lovely appointments and, most notable, top notch staff (special thanks to Claudia). We asked for a room change the second day and there were no questions asked. They could not have been more accommodating when it came to printing documents, making reservations, providing advice. Complimentary snacks were a nice touch. Only drawback -- and really the only one -- the breakfast is very, very below any standard. Cramped, under serviced, chaotic with absolutely bad selections. But no sweat. A most enjoyable experience in a city of surprises.

Room Tip: There are some two floor rooms -- with the bathroom on the first level and beds above. If you get u...

Chiaja Hotel de Charme is an excellent hotel where to stay for a week-end in November. It offers the charm of an old mansion in the heart of Napoli, with the all the modern confort you can expect. Rooms with a view on via Chiaia are more noisy at night (if you open the window).

We arrived in Naples by air and took a taxi to the hotel by showing the cab driver the name and street address. After a wild ride through many alley's we arrived and dragged our luggage into the lobby. The receptionist was very nice in explaining that this was not the hotel we had reservations in and said it was a common mistake. Our Cab had already left, so she called another one for us. After a bit of confusion, the driver finally understood that it was the "other" hotel with a similar name, so off we went.

Upon arriving at that hotel, we once again dragged our luggage up a tiny elevator to the lobby and were greeted by a very nice receptionist who confirmed that we were in the right place but they had had "a water problem" and several rooms were not usable. But, have no fear, they have re-booked us into a (more upscale) sister hotel in a better part of town. So, she called another cab who came and got us (the hotel paid for this ride) and took us to the Chiaja Hotel de Charme. This hotel is on a pedestrian only street so we had to pull our luggage a block or so along a shopping mall sort of street from where the cab dropped us off.

The hotel itself was a bit hard to locate as there is no sign for it and it doesn't look like a hotel. It is in an old castle which is shared with other uses such as private apartments and I think another hotel as well and the front of it (when we arrived) was just an enormous double wood door like you'd see on, well, a castle or monastery along with a panel of doorbells to the side. Fortunately the hotel name was on several of the doorbell buttons. After being buzzed in, we once again dragged our luggage up another tiny elevator to the lobby on the 2nd floor (1st floor in European speak) and thank goodness this hotel had our reservation and a room for us.

The room had a queen size bed that was very comfortable but the room was somewhat small (compared to American). However, in old cities such a Naples it's probably pretty typical. It was very well appointed but only room for one chair. The private en-suite bathroom was very nice with sink, toilet, b-day and shower. There was also a small closet and small fridge taken up mostly with mini-bar items for sale. We wedged one suitcase into the closet but the other one had to be left on the floor by the foot of the bed and more or less stepped over to get to the bathroom.

The hotel has excellent service and is well maintained. Good A/C with remote control (thank goodness since the unit was above the window and perhaps 15 feet high).

The location is great. As mentioned it's on a pedestrian only street and is an easy walk down to the tourist promenade area by the bay, which is also pedestrian only. Lot's of interesting shops, restaurants and people watching.

All in all a very nice experience (once we got there)

We arrived by train and luckily, I printed out a map showing the hotel location to give to the taxi driver. I don't speak Italian, but it seemed that he was unfamiliar with the hotel, so glad I brought the map. We arrived late on a Friday morning and as the hotel is on a pedestrial street, he dropped us off at the bottom of the street. It was several blocks slightly uphill to reach the hotel. The entrance to the hotel is in an inner courtyard, but if you arrive during "off hours", you have to step through a small wooden door to reach the hotel. Otherwise, the larger wood door is open for easy access. We were greeted by the receptionist who came down to show us the elevator. We had a large, quiet room behind the reception - no view, but quiet is more important to us. Breakfast was very good, included the local pastry, sfogliatella, a clam shaped pastry with sweet ricotta cheese - delicious. Also, fresh made cappucino or other coffee selections. We chose this hotel due to it's proximity to Teatro San Carlo and the port. We had tickets to a Saturday night performance, but when we arrived, the theatre was dark and a sign was posted on the door. A passerby informed us that there was a strike and there would be no performance. We did later get a credit. While the port was in walking distance, we decided to take a taxi for our ferry departure to Capri. The receptionist called and one arrived almost immediately.

Even though we had a room facing the street the french doors were so well insulated it reduced the honest to goodness roar to murmurs. No ear plugs required except for one night when we forgot to shut the doors. Its location was in the middle of action with loads of eateries and shops close by. Local transportation ie metro and funicular were a hop and skip away. Liked the location and cleanliness. Service aimed to please and Breakfasts were quite adequate. Would recommend and return if we returned to Naples.
