“Impressive castle”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

This is sad I know but the reason we wanted to see the castle was that we wanted to stand in the same spot as Cesare Borgia in the tv series :) How cheesy I know. But anyhow, we took the funicular of from Via Toledo which was pretty cool in itself and then it is about a 10 minute walk to the castle. There are signposts that lead you there from the funicular. Entrance to the castle cost 5€ and this was a fair price. To be honest there's not a whole lot to see inside the castle itself and many parts of it are restricted from tourists. There was a lovely exhibition on inside the castle during our visit which I think was something to do with Italian tv and radio broadcasting history. I couldn't understand any of the information about it as it was all in italian but we got the main gist of it and enjoyed looking at the display of stunning designer outfits worn by some of the italian tv stars. I think the main reason to come to the castle would be the views which are, of course, spectacular. We never did get to follow in the footsteps of Cesare Borgia but enjoyed the visit nonetheless. The castle doesn't seem to be that popular compared to Naples' other attractions and we had the whole place almost to ourselves so if you're looking for a bit of peace and quiet away from the city then this might be a good idea for a couple of hours trip.

“Breathtaking views”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

Though there is not a lot to see inside the Castle, the view from the ramparts is absolutely spectacular and not to be missed. There is an elevator to take you to the top of the castle. After taking in the views from different parts of the castle, you can walk down inside and walk across the bridge over the moat.

“Worth the visit for the view”
Reviewed 16 July 2014 via mobile

This castle really provides an excellent panoramic view point, one of the best I have ever experienced (I always try to climb towers in different cities). You can see the whole Naples with its main landmarks and the bay, Vesuvio, the port and the islands (Capri and Ischia). It's really impressive. Seems like there's nothing to do except enjoying the view, so we headed straight to the lift after arrival (the ticket costs 5 euros). To get to the castle we used the central funicular from via Toledo, then followed the signs, it's a 10 minutes walk.

“The views are spectacular”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

Now there are many places in Naples you can go to in order to see a view of the city. But none so much as Castel Sant'Elmo. The views are uncompromising. Not one building obstructs the panoramas that this castle supplies. Granted the only thing you pay for is the view. But on a sunny day when the sky is clear and the bay is mist free all you need to do at the top is soak in the view. It's glorious.
There is a gallery inside that was at the time displaying a history of RAI Television. It was only in Italian so brush up before hand. Once you've done go and have lunch across the road at the gorgeous semi-haute cuisine restaurant.
Were the castle used as a wider exhibition of the military history of the area, an exhibition hall of grander design or just restored to it's former guise in the olden days of militarism then it might have garnered a 5 star.
