Whilst we had a great time in Naples and really enjoyed staying at the Micalo, I would hesitate to call it a hotel. Hotels generally have more facilities in my experience. The owner was very welcoming and the style of Micalo was great, but the breakfast could easily be improved with the offer of fresh fruit, of which there is an abundance in Italy. It is very unfortunate that there are major works being undertaken right outside the hotel, but if you can tolerate the noise first thing in the morning, it's a good place to stay.

Micalo really is the business with the efficiency and high standards of a five star hotel and the personality and quirky imaginative elegance of a boutique hotel. My two teenage children and I spent four nights here earlier this month and enjoyed every minute. The hotel is right in the centre of town within walking distance of the most important sights. the owner clearly has an eye for design:- the rooms were delightful, impeccably clean and beautifully furnished with lots of interesting vintage architectural pieces. We took two rooms, and each one was different and cleverly configured, but both had signature linen sheets, high quality flat screen televisions ( with sky), fluffy towels and gorgeous bathrooms. the whole place is built using local high quality stone and wood, furnished with local contemporary art throughout, and at the height of august was cool and airy everywhere. There is a really personal atmosphere to the place, and the staff worked hard to accommodate all our requests, including planning daily itineraries for us around Naples and also to Pompeii. Ithas no restaurant, but lots of small bars and eateries within a couple of hundred yards and further afield which the management booked for us on a nightly basis. Their breakfast is also delicious, all home made pastries as well as fresh juices and ( incredibly for Italy-cooked breakfast) all in the price. We were told some customers want self service buffet, but we far preferred being served our three course breakfast by a waitress than having to negotiate the usual self service scenario of fighting over the toaster and congealed food under tepid lamps. We have found hotels in southern Italy to be of variable quality, but the seriously classy Micalo proved the best city experience to date.

Dear Emily C.,
thank you for your review; The manager and the staff of Micalò really appreciated your words.
Hotel Micalò has been studied in every detail to offer our guests the best service and the most relaxing, personal and elegant atmosphere; In fact, the most important thing for Micalò is our clients satisfaction.
Micalò is a small boutique hotel, not a big luxury hotel and this is the reason why it's not so easy to have such a good review about Micalò .

We hope we could be of service to you again

Yours sincerely

We stayed at the Micalo for 5 nights, attending a wedding in Ravello, in-between and chose this hotel for the location - it didn't disappoint. The area was chic and more upmarket than other part of Naples so safety / walking at night was not an issue.

Rooms:
For first stay, we booked the standard room and there were a few things not quite up to par (eg half used toiletries and no soap) but these were quickly fixed upon request. We wanted to keep the door open (there were no windows, just double glass doors) as the weather was lovely but the door opened out to the public verandah and middle of the building quadrangle. This meant that you could hear and see the neighbours from your bed with tradesman and other building tenants literally walking past your bed. It was not so good for privacy! But it was the cheapest room so you get what you pay for.

On our return stay, we were upgraded to a seaview room and there was a difference - the room was larger, the toiletries were properly stocked, we could keep the doors open for fresh air with complete privacy as the doors faced the street which then faced the sea. If the budget allows, I would recommend booking a seaview room.

Food:
The breakfast was tasty and freshly made to order (from the orange juice to the pancakes) which takes time so it's not advisable to be in a rush and expect your food in a hurry. I travel frequently for work so it was lovely to have a home-style but gourmet breakfast and not a mass produced buffet-style breakfast. Although we were full from breakfast, each morning we managed to find space for a couple of fresh Italian pastries from Gran Bar Riviera which is conveniently located a few doors down on the same street and since they stay open until late, we also managed a gelato or two on the way home in the evenings.

Recommend a meal at Da Dora, just a few minutes walk from the hotel, off the main street. It's a rustic, home-style seafood restaurant which doesn't need to spend money on fancy decor because the food speaks for itself. We tried many pizza places over 5 days and can happily recommend at least two solid pizzerias walking distance from the hotel. Antonia et Antonia (on the main street, facing the sea), perfect for alfresco dining, about 25 mins walk towards Naples centre and Trianon de Ciro, about 15 mins walk in the other direction.

The owner was very helpful and very happy to share her knowledge of Naples, you just need to ask! We would recommend this hotel if you are keen to stay in a boutique hotel with personal service (which means things are not always perfect, like people) and lots of character, far from the normal five star big hotel chains.

Room Tip: Request a seaview room, for privacy, if nothing else!

We stayed at this hotel for one night in June, 2011. It is very chic, smells wonderful but difficult to find if you're taking the train, walking, etc. The bathroom in our room is reached by climbing 15-20 steep steps, then walking on a platform which did not seem constructed very well as you are walking right over the bed. It is extremely inconvenient to carry a small bag up there. We were told a room on one level was available but the cost was $20 euros additional. We were the ONLY guests in the hotel that night and really would have appreciated a complimentary upgrade; but maybe Italy doesn't offer this. It certainly would have brought us back to the hotel or recommend it to our friends. The staff were courteous but we felt like we were imposing on them!

I stayed at the Hotel Micalo in Naples and it was an extrodinary experience. Absoluately incredible design. It was like staying inside a museum of contemporary art. All art work, tiles, furnishings were local to Naples. Great location on the Rivieria Chiaia facing the waterfront on the Bay of Naples. It was nice to not be in the center of the Centro Storico which can be quite hectic in Naples, but still a short ride away to all the sights.

There has been some past reviews with issues about construction. Rest assured that all of the french door windows have beautiful thick padding and you will sleep like a baby, no problems there.

The owner was very helpful with directions and getting a taxi when needed. Also, they go all out for breakfast and will even make you eggs if you like.

Don't miss out on this once in a lifetime experience to feel like you are staying in a museum in a great neighborhood of Naples.

the hotel has some really good points, the interior is very calming and very modern, the staff i found very helpful-they sent us to some really excellent local restaurants.we really liked the layout of our room with the bathroom upstairs-though i do not think older clients would think much of the rather steep steps-the light never worked the whole time we were there and one of the lamps above the bed worked very erractically,i think they need to hire an electrician.housekeeping was average-our bathroom soap was not changed during our stay,
the wooden floors were not always hoovered.i was surprised there were no slippers provided even though there were very good bathrobes.i really liked the dining room,it was a very pleasant place to have breakfast, the breakfast though was a bit average for such a higher priced hotel-for italy the coffee was awful.the problem this hotel has is the price,it is way too expensive for what you get and needs to be more professional,it is more expensive than the rather grander parkers hotel.the downstairs entrance off the street does not do the hotel any favours,i think they could clean the entrance a bit more diligently,i think the problem is that it is shared by many other people.at the end i would say hotel micalo reminds me of an upmarket bed and breakfast,i think they are pushing it to call themselves a boutique hotel, they need to urgently review their price stucture.

Micalò was the ideal hotel for a recent 4-day visit to the marvelous city of Napoli. In the pretty Chiaia district, Micalò is located near the water with easy walks to other historic parts of the city and to the Mergellina station of the Metropolitana. Although it's on a busy street, the double-paned windows keep out most traffic noise, yet can be opened to bring in the fresh evening air. In our attractive room, the bed was very comfortable and linens were best quality. The bathroom was small but had everything we needed including a great shower. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, yet we had a sense of privacy, too. Breakfast in the sunny Artbar was excellent with a good selection of offerings, including fresh juices and delicious pastries. The art work throughout is delightful and makes this small hotel feel special.
