We couldn't have asked for a better day than our excursion with our guide Ilaria of Private Tours! My husband and I departed from Naples and started before the crowds converged onto Pompeii. She dazzled us with details that really brought the tour to life, and brought together what could have been an exhausting, confusing collection of ruins (albeit spectacular) into something coherent, fascinating, and touching. By pointing out the details of how people lived--and died--our tour guide brought us a sense of intimacy and understanding of the site in ways that a guidebook could never do. Her passion, though, was Herculaneum--it's what she studies, lives, and breathes, and her expertise shows on the afternoon tour of the more compact, but equally awe-inspiring, ruins of this more overlooked site. I definitely would recommend touring Herculaneum with her. Tour it with Pompeii, or tour Herculaneum by itself. It was a long day, but we didn't notice--Ilaria is that good. Yes, they stop for a planned lunch at a vinyard that at first glance screams tourist trap--but it was a very pleasant experience, the wines were delicious, and the food simple, filling and, oh, actually very very good! This tour was simply the highlight of our trip that included Rome, Naples, and the Amalfi coast. Ottimo!

We travelled to Naples on a cruise ship. Researching we found 'Private Tours of Pompeii' we booked and were met at the port by Enzo who was in a smart comfortable VW Minibus. We then collected our guide an ex teacher who was very knowledgeable. It was obvious that she loved her job and Pompeii, she brought it to life, an unbelievable experience made fantastic by this guide. This was a once in a life-time trip made all the more special by this talented young lady. In all the whole day from the Polite careful smart driver, the quality transport and the wonderful guide was first class and a credit to Private Tours of Pompeii to whom we thank. We had a great day, the competition for these tour companies is vast, we found the best.

Five of us visited Pompeii and Herculaneum with Marco, a trained archaeologist. His knowledge and passion brought history alive for us and he explained thousands of tiny details that we could never have gleaned from a guide book. The sites came alive with Marco! He also organised a lovely lunch at a vineyard on the slopes of Vesuvius that was an unexpected treat. It was an amazing experience and mostly due to Marco's in depth knowledge and enthusiasm for his subject. This is a must do experience for anyone who has always longed to see Pompeii.

Not knowing what to expect of the Pompeii ruins, my mother and I had the pleasure of having Daniela as our guide. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for the history and people of Pompeii was evident upon our first meeting. It was obvious how much she enjoys her job as her stories about what life was like back before the volcano erupted became a visual to us as we toured the ruins. The benefit of such a tour is that regardless of how busy the ruins are (which they were when we were there) Daniela was able to take us away from the crowds so that we were able to get a full appreciation of well the ruins have been preserved and restored. I highly recommend this tour for anyone thinking of visiting Pompeii and if Pompeii is not in your travel plans, it should be!

My wife and I had a cruise ship stop in Naples. We opted to spend the entire day (together with a couple we'd befriended on the cruise) in Pompeii and Herculaneum. To accomplish this we weren't interested a large-group tour sponsored by the cruise ship. Via TripAdvisor, my wife had found Private Tours of Pompeii. What a great find that was. Loretta, our tour guide and Enzo, our driver were fabulous. Loretta was knowledgable and fun. She breathed life into all we saw and made our tour just fabulous. They arrived at the cruise ship on time and returned us in plenty of time. Enzo helped arranged a great lunch at a winery on Mt. Vesuvius. We HIGHLY recommend Private Tours of Pompeii and especially Loretta.
