“one of the better houses”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

This was one of the better buildings of those that were unlocked on the day I went. It seems some tour guides have the keys to some of the better ones, and they are locked to the public who are wandering around.

“House of Menander has many beautiful frescoes”
Reviewed 28 December 2013

This villa is full of beautiful frescoes and some nice mosaics. It has an interesting catchment pool for collecting rainwater in the center of a large room. It is evident that the owner of the house was very wealthy.

“Typical rich villa of Pompeii”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

There is a dispute about the villa's owner. Some historians believe that it belonged to Quintus Poppeus, a relative of Poppaea Sabia, Nero's 2nd wife. But other historians say that perhaps the owner was just a tourist! The name of the house comes from a fresco in the peristyle. It's Menander or just the owner of the house? Noone can say for sure. Anyway, the 3rd c.B.C. villa is very big with a lot of rooms covered with wall paintings in vivid colours. It's a typical house of a rich owner and gives an example of the way of life in Pax Romana time. The Peristyle with Doric columns surrounds the patio wonderfully. Because of its beauty and importance, the House is always busy and every group must wait for the previous one to leave, before entering.

“Beautiful example of Roman villa.”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

Another beautiful villa, probably belonging to some noble family.
I was amazed by the beauty and care of the many frescos on all the walls of this large villa, I dare not imagine how wonderful it had been to see it nearly 20 centuries ago in all its glory.
A beautiful garden outside and just as beautiful on the inside, inside in the center of the large room a stone pool to collect rainwater, which is typical in the rich Roman villas.
Everything is perfectly kept and preserved.
