we booked our guided tours on the official vatican page- vatican.va ...there were 2 main tours: museums+sistine chapel (for 32 euros) and museums + sistine chapel + St. Peter's basilica for 36 euros...YOU WILL NOT GET ANYTHING CHEAPER THAN THIS IF YOU BOOK OUTSIDE..!!...this is a damn good deal...i didn't know at the time who would be our guide, but it turned out to be a certain Flemish guy, Frank van den Broeke...check out his webpage here http://www.frankvandenbroeke.com/Guided_tours_of_Rome/Introduction.html
Our tour of the museums was such a success only because of him..!!...tip: try and see whether you can get him as your guide..I think his website mentions how you can do that...
Lemme describe the tour to you...I was looking at the other unofficial (external) tour guides around me..they all just seemed to be blabbing into their mics, and just describing the stuff around as if they could've done it in their sleep...no life...in comparison Frank was like light next to darkness...he was animated, humourous as well...and we didn't feel bored even for a second...he's been an official vatican guide for nearly 20 years, so the experience helps in going around/thru the crowds, coz v were never in much of the crowded places at all...

tip: if you take the museums+chapel package, you have to exit and go all the way round d colonnades to enter the basilica...go thru security there again and everything..

and here's my trump that'll convince your'll...

which tour guide EVER will turn a 2 hour tour, into a 3 hour tour, only coz he says there's so much to show you, and I want to show you everything??!!...Frank did that for us...
ONE MORE..!!..even tho we did the museums+sistine chapel package, he told us to use a door at d sistine chapel (not d usual exit) which leads STRAIGHT TO THE BASILICA...meant for the other package tours actually...but he said mention my name and they'll let you thru..AND THEY DID..!!!

“Very Poor”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

We did the official Vatican tour of the Vatican Museum (including the Sistine Chapel) and St Peter's. We booked it in advance at what seemed like a reasonable 35 euros each. The Vatican is spectacular and there is so much to see, unfortunately we missed most of it as our tour guide was awful. Her English was terrible and she ran through the Museum giving most of the rooms barely a mention. To some extent this is necessary due to time constraints and the size of the museum but we spent longer in the cafeteria than we did anywhere else. Even when we could understand her she gave us no real background or interesting information on any of the rooms, art etc. I think she actually spent more time telling us how lucky we were to have her as a guide than she did telling us about the sights.
I would strongly recommend viewing the Vatican and having a tour guide but do not book your tour through the Vatican. Some of the other private tours I overheard sounded very interesting.

Very disappointing.

“amazing city”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

As a tourist in Rome, the Vatican is a must. Steeped in history the guided tour is a necessity. The value alone exists in beating the queues with your tour guide. Sistine chapel was a slight let down but the St Peters Bascilla was amazing. Just being in the Vatican square was worth the trip

“Maya's Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel Tour”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

We used the metro to get to the Vatican from our hotel. We had not booked a tour and quickly discovered that the queues were hours long _ it was the start to the summer break. We opted to accept a Maya Tours agent's offer and purchased a tour at 50 euro each. We did have to wait some 40 minutes for the tour to start but it was better than a 2-3 hour wait inline. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and organised. How he kept 35 of us together with the huge crowd was a logistics exercise. We did get to see Sistine Chapel and the Museums but the crowds at time made it very unpleasant. The reality is that there is just too much to see.

Prime lesson - we should have pre-booked a tour. However in noting this Maya Tours did an excellent job in a very crowded environment.
