We booked thru our hotel which we trusted (boscolo palace), so if your hotel suggests Green Line to you, go somewhere else.

To start, the company was set to pick us up at our hotel and was 30 minutes late. We drove to the agency and, after getting our tickets, we waited on the bus for an extra 45 minutes, presumably to wait for other passengers. So now we were 1 hr 15 minutes into the 4 hours we allotted for the tour and we hasn't even left the agency. The guide then told us we were going to take a 20 minute scenic drive to the Vatican (a drive which should have taken 5 minutes). When we got to Vatican City we spent another 15 minutes waiting for the guide to organize tickets, and as soon as we got into the museum, the guide had run ahead leaving half of the large group behind. We spent another half hour roaming the museums looking for the group and didn't get to see any of the artwork along the way. We finally found him at the Sistine chapel and he managed to keep the group together until the end of the time at St. Peter's.

As if the tour hadn't been bad enough already, at the end of the tour when we were taken to the gift shop for 15 minutes before being taken back to our hotel, THE GUIDE LEFT WITHOUT 15 PEOPLE WITH ALL OF THEIR BELONGINGS STILL ON THE BUS! I called the company and they said it must have been our fault, even though all 15 of us were standing outside the store waiting for him. They refused to send a smaller van to pick us up and said we had to find our way back to the agency to get our things. One elderly woman with us had her medications on the bus that she thought she would have access to after the tour and she was extremely distraught that she couldn't get to them. After much time on the phone, the company continued to refuse to pay cab fare or take any responsibility.

Do NOT book with Green Line - we were not the only family who has had such an experience. We booked thru our hotel (boscolo palace), so if they suggest Green Line to you, go somewhere else.

We used Green Line Tours (GLT) twice during our stay in Rome.

The first was an OK trip to Tuscany. The trip was made for us because it was to Tuscany - not because of GLT. The coach was pleasant enough, the passengers we travelled with were great, which helped make the trip better. If you take the tour look for the sword in the stone at Cordona. The guide was OK although managed to speak in a continuous mono tone, which did not make the information he was giving us that interesting. The scenery was magnificent, the lunch we had (included in the cost) was very good and the wine that was at the wine tasting was very nice - although not that great a choice. The master wine maker was very enthusiastic, obviously loving his job (apparently he's famous in the US) and although comments were made about him being little 'over friendly' with the ladies on the tour, others thought he was just being 'charming'. Be prepared for him to look lovingly into your eyes and stroke your chin / cheek! The tours was spoiled at the end -we were told that we would be dropped close to our hotel. The driver dropped us off with a '2 minutes that way', which was actually 15 - 20 minutes. All in all the tour was very good, fantastic scenery, good food and wine, if slightly over prices for what you got.

The second encounter with GLT was with the open topped tour of Rome. As we weren't overly disappointed with GLT, we chose to use them. We had been to Rome previously and been on an open topped tour with a different company who use a red bus with yellow writing, I can't remember the name. Wrongly we assumed that as there was so much competition, all would be much the same between the companies. How wrong we were. The tour was said to be 2 hours long and a 'hop on / hop off' service. Well the reason it takes 2 hours is that we spent a huge part of that stopped at bus stops - up to 15 minutes for 3 of the 9 stops whilst it seemed we were waiting for the ticket sellers to try and get more people onto the bus. The commentary was not particularly good (in places it was talking about areas we had passed minutes ago) and several of the plug in points for the head phones did not work. All in all we wished we had used the company we had used previously. Please do not make the mistake we did. GLT you need to improve. I think that they work on the principle that once you have bought the ticket for their bus you are stuck with them. If you don't buy the ticket in the first place you won't have that problem!

We have been in Rome for 10 days so we saw pretty much everything there is to see. We booked a lot of tours - all from a different company, very nice ones - but that company didn't have Day Trip tour to Florence, so we said to go with Green Line, why not? We were supposed to be picked up at 7 am sharp, so we skipped our breakfast (which started at 7) only to wait in front of the hotel for 40 minutes!!! We thought they forgot about us so we gave them a call. They directed us to the guide who just scream "The bus is coming!" and hang up. When they did pick up (with a small car, which took us to the actual bus), people in the bus were really pissed at us! They obviously have been waiting a long time for us and they obviously had no idea it was not our fault!
Now - the tour itself. Well - I don't think doing Florence in a day from Rome is actually a good idea. We drove for 8 hours in total and we visited only two museums for 2 hour. Then we had one hour lunch break, one hour for ourselves. The local guide was a really angry woman who had no idea how to be pleasant! The funnies thing is that they didn't get enough people for the English tour, not for the French tour, so we went together! The guide was saying everything twice - once in French, second in English, which basically meant that out of two hours visiting, one was just re-listening everything. I felt they were really making fun of us and I would never book with them again.

Although a bit pricey at 122 Euro pp all in all I was pleased with the tour from Rome to Pompeii via Naples. The on board bus guide was very informative. Our Pompeii guide Theresa was excellent, full of information and theatre and she often made us laugh. Yes, the journey was a long one but the bus was comfortable and we had lots of stops along the way. I would however recommend the company change their restaurant in Pompeii, the food was barely edible.

Lots of companies to choose from in Rome but I went on the GLT bus and had a good experiences apart from the couple of times where there where 15 minute stops. Free wifi on board, clear commentary and a friendly guide downstairs. Less busy than the red busses on a whole but still packed at times.

One problem I did have was not realising on the saturday after 3or4 pm the route changes and I didn't realise that the bus wouldn't pick me up in the same place, however the ticket seller should me the right direction.

Carry a bottle of water with you and fill it up at the free fountains.
