“Great B&B”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 June 2012

My now husband and I stayed at La Maison dell Orologio twice during our trip to Italy earlier this month. Michelle was great in helping us with transportation and recommending places to eat. The rooms were very clean and really nice. We loved the location- walking distance to the Vatican city, Piazza Navona and even Trevi fountain and Spanish steps if you enjoy walking. We would absolutely stay there again in the future. My only complain- the extremely loud birds that live on the roof of the building next door and never go to sleep- but even then if you close the windows and turn on the AC you wont hear a thing.

We stayd for 4 nights in this charming B&B. Late arrival was no issue and breakfast was better than some hotels I stayd in before. We got a very friendly welcome and helpful reception and interesting information. We liked it very much and will return

As with so much of what we saw in Rome, La Maison exceeded our expectations. We spent 4 nights here in April 2012 - our first visit to Rome. Naturally, we wanted to see as many of the major sites as possible in the time and the superb location meant that we could walk to the Vatican, Colosseum, Capitoline Hill, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps etc.. We were also only a short walk from good pizzerias and restaurants. The narrow cobbled streets and old buildings in this part of the city make it very atmospheric and, when we let ourselves in through the large wooden doors of this 17th century building ( the accommodation is on the second floor), we really felt like locals. The service, attention to detail, breakfasts and accommodation here were great. We loved it!

Room Tip: There are only 3 rooms here. Ours was No. 1 and it was large and comfortable with very high ceilings...

The staff at this B&B were truly exceptional. I had some personal issues to deal with that they went out of their way to accomodate. The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms new and clean. The breakfast is ample. I've been told by the staff that they are upgrading the internet system immediately because visitors have had a problem using the internet.

Room Tip: All the rooms are pretty much the same. No. 4 is a corner unit but there is no vista.

This place is in a super location, and Fabrizio is a gracious and helpful host. My wife and I stayed 8 nights at the Maison and for our needs it was ideal. The location is very convenient – take a short walk across either of the 2 Tiber bridges that are within a block, and you are at Castel San Angelo and within shouting distance of St. Peter’s Square. A short walk in the other direction and you are at Piazza Navona, with the Pantheon just a few blocks further. We walked to the Colosseum from here but that was a hike! After a couple of days we started taking the bus more often, and the useful 64 (or its express version) stops just a few steps away on the main east west street.
The B&B is basically a 3 bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor (in US terms) of a building shared with other apartments, none of which appear to be anything but private residences. The feel we had was that we were residents, not tourists, in an intriguing part of Rome. It’s 40 plus stairs up from the street to the entrance of the B&B, but there is an elevator. It was not working on the day of our departure, but that was the only time in 8 days that it wasn’t. Fabrizio carried our bags down himself.
Among the things he and his wonderful on-site staff (two young women who are sisters) did for us were to arrange a driver to meet us at the airport and to make reservations at restaurants and the Borghese Galleria (including a last –minute change to the day of our visit there.) The room was cleaned meticulously every day. Breakfast was ample enough to sustain us through energetic mornings so that we could take a late lunch (e.g. 2 pm) and a late (by our US standards) dinner (8 or 8:30.) Breakfast is basically the same every day: help yourself to small bottled juices, a carafe of milk, pastries, cookies, rolls, sliced cheeses, sliced meats, yoghurt, dry cereal (corn flakes, Special K), fresh fruit, sliced hardboiled eggs. Cappuccino or espresso (or both) are served by the ladies promptly and cheerfully. The breakfast room is small, as others have noted, but during our stay there were never more than two of the three tables in use.
We were in the largest bedroom, which was large enough that we didn’t feel cramped. There is a wardrobe that easily held all our hanging clothes, and a 4 drawer dresser with a large mirror. The sitting area includes a coffee table, 2 person love seat and 2 or 3 other chairs. The chairs are more elegant than plush, not the type you might find in a US chain hotel. The bed was queen size, with an adequate mattress -- we prefer them firmer that this but it did not sag at all. The bathroom is very well lighted and has a nice glass enclosed shower, a toilet and a bidet. There is an adequate vanity for the sink, plus a small 3 tiered stand on which toiletries etc. can be stored. There is a heated towel bar that we used to dry a few small things we washed in the sink. Our adult son joined us for three nights during the middle of our stay, and Fabrizio gave him one of the other 2 rooms, which are smaller but quite nice. Each has its own bathroom, similar to ours. One has a desk. This would be a very nice set up for a husband and wife joined by grown kids in their own rooms.
If you stay here, I’d recommend using Google Maps or similar to locate the Maison and its nearby streets and establishments, then print a screen shot and bring some copies. Fabrizio is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his neighborhood, and will mark spots on maps he has for that purpose, but the scale on them is small.
This was our first visit to Italy together and we are glad we focused on Rome alone. When we return, it’s likely we’ll fly in and/or out of Rome before or after visiting another city or cities, and I expect we’d stay a couple of nights here again because we found the host and the neighborhood so much to our liking. The B&B is a short walk from Piazza Cavour, which is one of two in-town destinations for the SITBus from FCO airport – our son did that and it's at least 30 Euro cheaper than a taxi.

I have been to Rome once before and loved my stay - this time, I was keen to base myself in the western part of the historic centre, where the roads are cobblestone, and pedestrian. It was difficult to find anywhere that was both well-regarded, lovely and affordable in this location, so I was pleased to be able to secure a room at Maison dell'Orologio.

The staff and owner are very kind and helpful, which is important especially when you are travelling on your own. I arrived off a long-haul flight from Australia at 7am, and got to the b&b about an hour or so later - although I was not entitled to a breakfast, as I had not stayed the night before, the staff offered me some anyway along with a bottle of cold water, as the day was very warm. They also went out of their way to get the room cleaned and made up so I could shower and rest, even though the other guests had just left, and check in was not until the afternoon. This made a huge difference to me, as I had been in transit for 33 hours, and still had the whole day to go!

La Maison is very safe and secure, in a good location, within walking distance to most major attractions in Rome. It is located on a pedestrian street so is generally quiet compared to most of Rome. The rooms and bathrooms are all huge, which is unusual in the heart of major cities.

There is fresh fruit and home made cakes/fresh pastries at breakfast (also meats, cheeses etc), which is much better than packaged food.

It was very hot when I was in Rome, and although the rooms are well air conditioned, it would also be good if the breakfast/public area could be cooled just a little - an overhead fan would be fine.

This small B&B does have only three rooms and to stay there was like living in a stately home in Rome. We were very satisfied with the location. From the B&B we could walk through cosy streets to almost everywhere. The room was huge and with periodic furniture. The bathroom was extremely nice decorated and the service was friendly. The only drawback was the breakfast “room”. After Italian standard the breakfast was OK, but we had to sit in a small tiny corner where there were little space and where the air was hot. A better breakfast room would have made this B&B a winner.
