“A great location, good food and service”
Reviewed 27 September 2012

We have eaten here several times and have enjoyed all of our meals. The wait staff are friendly, the service is great and you have wonderful people watching while you eat as people peruse down the alley from the Trevi Fountain to the Pantheon!

“Delightful Italian meal in noisy and authentic atmosphere.”
Reviewed 25 February 2011

Too bad we only got to know of this restaurant on the last night of our stay in Rome! The waiter was very patient with us to explain the menu and served us a very tasteful meal in a room with just Italians in it besides us. And... In the end we celebrated a great night with a good glass of grappa!

“Dishes looking like they came out of a "Bon Apetit" or "Conde Nast" magazine, but with blue-plate Diner prices: a find.”
Reviewed 27 January 2010

I actually have lived in Rome for 5 years now, and this is the best little 'secret' restaurant I have found. The problem with Italian restaurants (in Italy) is that they tend to have repetitive menus, sometimes bland food, and if you're near a touristy monument ridiculously subadequate ingredients.

La Locanda has about 7 tables: it's so small that the owner can apparently afford to change the entire menu daily. The menu usually features no more than 5 'primi' (pastas), and 5 main dishes; the ingredients are incredibly high quality, considering the prices.

A plate of pasta is 10-12 Euro; wine is inexpensive and can be ordered by the half-liter, etc.

Some examples of menu items: Pasta with Canelli (a special long type of shellfish) and Clams, Fiochetti (a type of ravioli) stuffed with Pear, Nut, Sage & Parmesan. The Carbonara is the best I've had in Rome, owing to the fact that they use the traditional pork ingredient called 'guanciale', rather than just chucking in some bacon. I could go on, but I'll just add that all of the regional Italian beefs are also represented (as well as Argentinian & Danish beef, at times), including the Tuscan Chianina. The Tiramisu is made in-house.

There are certainly a full selection of liquors, though the grain-alcohol and dessert wine is hidden (making it difficult to pick and choose what you might like visually, if you don't speak Italian)... I think once I counted 6 different kinds of Grappa. the wine fridge is plain-view, meaning that it's impossible for them to water-down the house wine to stretch out the supply: standard practice for touristy restaurants in Italy.

If you are staying in Rome I would suggest going to this place for your first Italian lunch. That will give you something to measure your other meals by. It is about 6 metro stops away from the Colosseum, (4 from the central Termini station), a 6-minute ride. The only thing is that the area is residential; which is good because you won't get ripped off, but maybe bad at night because tourists generally like being in the center for romantic dinners.

The atmosphere is casual. (but not sloppy.)

La Locanda is a 5-7 minute walk from Tiburtina Station (blue line), off of the very main and well-lit Via Tiburtina. The minute you orient yourself and find Via Tiburtina (station adjacent) and walk to the first stoplight, you'll see a shop for musical instruments called 'Cherubini' (there's a corresponding green Cherub sign out front), and a cinema called 'Ulysses' on the corner. I'd Google earth/maps it. If you're taking public transit elsewhere, it's very central.

I imagine they're closed through the middle of the day (like from 3pm-7pm). For dinner they open at 7. Closed on Sunday.

The owner is a redhead and very affable, the service is good as well. Might not be the choice for you if you have more than 10 people.
