Relais Maddalena is just a gem located perfectly in Rome. The staff is great and very friendly. The room was very clean and tastefully decorated. After a tiring trip from Perugia we could immediately relax in no time and hit the streets of Rome. We have been to Rome before in many occasions, but Relais Maddalena is the best b&b we have ever stayed at.
I recommend it to everyone.!

Ahhh Rome.... we could not get enough, yet had only booked to stay for 2 days at Relais Maddalena. It was beautiful, a complete oasis as other reviewers have said with a perfect location. Francesco met out taxi outside (agree that otherwise it would have been hard to find) and helped us on our way. No news channels in English on the TV, not that we watched it really there was too much to do, we like to have the news on when we get ready in the morning. We had the room with a view and loved looking into the old church across the road with the busy piazza below.

Just watch your belongings! We were tripped and our camera stolen as we walked from the Trevi foundation, shortly after arriving. Was devastating. Although we knew all about the pickpockets, they really are cunning - we had the camera over our shoulder.

We also loved Francesco's gelato. Hope to be back one day.

I found Relais Maddalena as I was looking for a hotel within walking distance of Maccheroni (brilliant restaurant) and Sant'Eustacchio coffee. (Odd, perhaps, but it's the best cappuccino we've ever had.) The price wasn't cheap - 200 euros per night - but given the location and amenities, it's more than fair.

Here are some details:

LOCATION
RM is located in a courtyard a few buildings from the Pantheon. I highly recommend looking at the photos of the building's front and making a detailed map, since it was nearly impossible for our cab driver to find. (It cost us an extra 15 euros for door to door cab service from the airport.)

That said, once you arrive, it's perfect! You're near everything; within a block of some truly great restaurants and sights.

CHECK IN
Our flight got in at noon and we arrived at around 1:30, an hour before check in. Fortunately a lovely woman named Andrea greeted us & gave us water while we waited.

Most of the staff speak very little English... this was fine for us as I speak some Spanish and the process is fairly simple. We also noticed that the couple following us had no trouble even though they spoke no Spanish or Italian.

THE ROOM
Bella. We got a "room with a view", which was a peek of the Pantheon & the full courtyard below. The windows are double glazed, so even though the area was lively until late at night, we couldn't hear a thing.

Our room was very large by European standards, with stone floors, tons of clothes storage space, a desk, a side table, nightstands and a king sized bed.

There is a free mini-bar with juices, peanuts, water and alcohol. If you need it, they can provide you with a cable for free high-speed internet access. (No wi-fi.) And there was a large flatscreen TV, though we didn't turn it on so I couldn't tell you which channels they get.

The bed was wonderful - large, clean and the right balance of firm and soft. (I hate mattresses that are too soft or firm, but this was nicely in the middle.) And the room is temperature controlled, so it's great year 'round.

The lights and A/C are turned on by a slot in which you slip your card key... It can be a bit confusing at first if you're not used to it, but it's a wonderful system.

THE BATHROOM
Again, excellent. They had both a toilet and bidet. The shower was very large and modern, with strong water pressure. The amenities were good - slippers, toothbrushes, shampoo, bath gel, sewing kit, razor, hairdryer. Though I don't believe they offered conditioner (I always bring my own). And the towels were fine, though like most Italian hotels I've stayed at, they only have hand and bath towels.

BREAKFAST
They have a small breakfast room near some of the bedrooms. Breakfast is quite good - no eggs or hot foods, but they did have a great selection of meats, cheeses, breads, toast, cereal, fruits and yoghurt. They will also make coffee/cappuccino/tea to order, but we skipped in favor of Sant'Eustacchio. (Hey, when in Rome...)

It may sound like I have reservations about RM, but we really didn't. We will definitely stay there again on our next visit and tell our friends to do the same. It was the perfect location and an incredibly comfortable stay for two dirty, jet-lagged travelers.

This is a very sweet, small B&B in an excellent location. The inn is very clean and worry free. The rooms are quite nicely decorated and a good size, with good lighting and air conditioning. Bathroom was modern and very clean. Besides the fact that this place is a very good place to rest one's head while in Rome, it is the staff that makes the Relais Maddelena so memorable. As others have noted, Franceso Amare and his staff are by nature kind, helpful people who undestand the value of treating a guest in an authentically peronal manner. Francesco is also very knowledgeable and very generous with his knowledge, and happy to help make your stay in Rome just what you want it to be. We will definitely be back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2-night stay at the Relais Maddlena in early July. While the weather in Rome was extremely hot, the inn provided the comfort of efficient, quiet air conditioning. The relais is well situated in the heart of the historic center. Our room was equipped with a modern bath and with a spacious and comfortable king sized bed. The B&B is one flight up in what is, otherwise, a characterful building in the Piazza Maddelena. One has the feeling of having one's own small apartment in Roma. Francesco, the owner, is a cordial host who made a special effort to greet us and to facilitate the details of our travel. We enjoyed meeting Marguerita, the manager, with whom I wish I could've conversed some more.

Amazing first impression. My mother, two sisters and I were warmly greeted by Francesco. He helped us with our luggages. He gave us a well detailed map and pointed us to the best routes to see beautiful spots in Rome. He took time to know us....we felt like we're being welcomed by a relative.

The spacious room has its old world charm with modern amenities. The complimentary drinks in the room ref and slippers were nice touches. The beds were comfortable. Linens were very soft and clean. The bathroom with the waterfalls shower was very relaxing. Thick and sweet smelling towels.

The breakfast was excellent. Fresh fruits, fruit juices, cheeses, prosciutto, yogurt, pie, made to order cappucino, bread and pastries. Andrea and Massun(?) were very accomodating.

The location was perfect just a few steps from the Pantheon and a nice walk to Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. Oh did I mention when you open the front gate of Relais Maddalena leading outside...its a pleasant surprise to see the beautiful old church across the plaza. In addition, San Crispin Gelato owned by Francesco was an A +...just a stone-throw away.

We are fortunate to stay in this place. Just a couple of suggestions: consider providing face towels and a non-slip mat in the bathroom (safety measure for the elderly). Highly recommended to friends and family. Reserve early...only six bedrooms. You won't be disappointed. I hope to come back someday!

This is a charming little 6 room hotel in a fabulous location, close to everything. The owner and staff are very helpful and accommodating. I would strongly recommend this hotel. The entrance is a little hard to find the first time you visit but that's all part of the charm. The decorating, bathroom and size of the room are great for a European hotel. I booked a room with a view and was not disappointed, we overlooked the piazza and from the room I could see part of the Panthenon 100 yards down a narrow little street. The breakfast is excellent.
